Subject: The strangest thing I have seen Poser do

Taking advantage of the great sale at DAZ this weekend, I purchased Traveler's fantastic Monster Parts. When I went to use them and attempted to parent the bone wings to Michael, the "parenting window" that popped up was completely useless. Nothing was legible. Just little boxes instead of a readable font. I have attached a screen shot. Has anyone got any idea what could have happened? It is almost as though Poser is searching for a font that is no longer there. Thanks in advance. By the way, the Monster Parts are not the culprit. Other props show the same problem when I attempt to set their parents. Kimberly

Oh, and by the way, I realize that the screen shot shows "Main Camera" but "Chest" had the same effect. I was too lazy to take another screen shot. Thanks :)

HolyCrap, whats your screen resolution? Those library images are huge, and your screen looks packed. ~EA

Weirdness. Any chance you installed something from a Japanese site? I've never had one do this to Poser, but that's what the boxes make me think of.

Have you tried rebooting? Sometimes a fond doesn't initialize properly on bootup.

I'd like to know what the resolution is and why the library images are so large to!! Is thyere a size setting for them that I missed? Beav

thats just an 800x600 resolution.. some of us dont have the luxury of a newer monitor at the prices they gouge us for :) (could be on a laptop too) as far as the font goes.. it definately looks like a font cache problem to me.. did you try closing the app, and see what happens after a reboot? try opening poser up first (after reboot) and see if they are still that way.. it does look like a chinese type style that made its way into ur app (actally looks more like a wingding font by the look of the "non character []s & the frame border looking letters) but give that a shot, and make sure the problem doesnt occur anywhere else in your OS.

I had my fonts go very tiny, I couldn't even read them, first just on a few things, then Crash! Duh=I broke Poser. Had to re=install it. It would still do some stuff but would not render at all. No other program was affected, or font. Only in Poser. BryceTech said it was because my poser was too Big-files etc. So back up your files.

may be the font that poser wanted was not there anymore, or for some unkown reasons that the font file was damaged. You needed to reinstall that font. If you are lucky you can reinstall the font, but I have try that and windows tells me "too many fonts installed" and want me to remove some fonts. After all, I need to reinstall windows. hope u good luck

Isn't there a poser.rsr file?

Got enough lights in that scene? If you're importing each pzr files just to take a look, then deleting the figure and keeping the lights, then importing another file, maybe that's why it's getting a little buggy.

hogwarden ( ) posted Tue, 11 June 2002 at 7:53 AM

Poser has a font file as part of it's installation, but I think that it is for the dial text etc. The fonts in the dialogue boxes are more likley to be controlled by your OS... Hmm... you know you may have to re-install windows if nothing else works. Ouch.

The same thing happened to me a few weeks ago... POSER loaded a wrong font type. Easy to fix : close POSER, shut down your PC, reboot, open POSER. That's it ! (at least it worked for me !)

Thanks everyone. I think it is an OS problem...which kind of figures. Win2000 has not been my best buddy since I installed it. sigh The good news is that I can at least parent props if I look at my manual and puzzle out what body part I need to mark off. And yes, it is an 800x600 screen resolution. Reinstalling Windows is kind of like contemplating a root canal. You know you have to do it but you sure as hell don't want to. ;-)

RHaseltine ( ) posted Tue, 11 June 2002 at 1:08 PM

Try deleting and reinstalling fonts before zapping Windows as a whole. With TrueType at least you can copy them from the Fonts folder to an ordinary folder before deleting, which makes reinstalling (a group at a time, so you can spot the trouble maker) easier. With luck your problem will be one of the basic fonts, which should just extract from the Windows .CAB files.

You know this is the type of problem that curious labs should take care of under the heading of product support. doncha think"

leather-guy ( ) posted Tue, 11 June 2002 at 11:23 PM

"And yes, it is an 800x600 screen resolution" Sparrowheart A thought occurs - Have you tried changing your screen resolution since this happened? This may be a system (non-truetype) font that's corrupted or lost that specific point-setting. (Believe it or not, I've seen that happen, also)

sparrowheart ( ) posted Wed, 12 June 2002 at 10:58 AM

Hmmm...worthy ideas, RHaseltine and leather-guy. If they work, be sure I will let you know. Bikermouse, I WISH this were a Curious Labs issue, but I think it has got to be my computer. This is the third computer and fourth operating system I have had since first buying Poser, and I've never had this problem before. Oh well...give thanks for the good times?? ;-)

  • cheers! sorry to hear that. you didn't tweak your system settings recently for any reason?

bikermouse ( ) posted Thu, 13 June 2002 at 1:00 AM

If you don't have norton utilities you might consider getting it. sometimes norton can catch stuff like this.
