Subject: Anyone Using the Canon G2?

After a resent response to one of my posts by Rork (http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?ForumID=12379&Form.ShowMessage=737602) , Thanks man. I started looking for a Point and Shoot type camera, but with a fast lens. So I walk into my local Pro shop, and tell the guy what Im looking for. His recommendation was a Contax T-3. This little sucker sports a Carl Zeiss 35mm F-2.5 lens. I know that I can get higher quality with a Leica, but come on, if you get anything better than F-4, you are talking starting price of $1,950.00. This for a point and shoot style range-finder, I dont think so.

Anyway the Contax was close to what I was looking for, but it was $699, again a bit much. So we started looking at the G2. Lens is a 32mm-102mm (35mm eqiv}, f-2/f2.5. 4 Mega Pixel. Good battery life and most of all it looks like a standard Point and Shoot, as long as you dont swivel the LCD out. The only thing is I dont like using LCDs for shooting and the standard viewfinder is just that, just a hole in the camera that adjusts with the zoom. Im going to go see a company rep at the pro shop this Friday; I basically want to ask him why I should get this instead of the Minolta D7. I already have the D7, so I know what it will do; it just doesnt look point and shoot enough.

So the question is, anyone using the G2 and if so, how do you like it? Im especially interested in low light photography. I have read the reviews on dpreview, and phot.net. but I value you guys opinion

Thanks Quinn

I upgraded from a G1 to a G2 recently and I really like it. It focuses better and has a better exposure system then the G1 had. The on camera flash is kind of weak, so I mainly use the 550EX, although that is probably overkill. It reproduces color very accurately. The only real complaint I have is the zoom range, I wish it were larger.

Quinn can I ask what you think of the Minolta 7? I am looking at the Minolta 5. Sorry I have no experience of the cannon or any dig stuff just thinking of taking the leap. :O)

Sorry for taken so long to get back to this. Mysnapz, Im liking the D7, The reason I got it over the others in the first place, is that it has a better optical zoom than any other consumber/pro-sumer camera. Something like 200mm. From my understanding the D5 is an equivalent camera, except for lower # of pixels. But because of the CCD being smaller, the zoom is longer than on the D7. Dont believe all the storys of heavy power consumption. Yes it dose use a lot of power, but I carry three sets of rechargeable batteres and have not run out of power yet. If you are interested in seeing some images, my web link is on the top. The Cherry Trees under Ques photos are my first attempts with the D7, and the WMZQ fest images under Judees Country Page, are also with the D7. Ill more up after this weekend. Everyone else, thanks for the help, I think I may be giving the G2 a try. Quinn
