Just a caution about running 2 antivirus programs at once... I ran McAfee and Norton, thinking I would be doubly safe, but the two interfered with each other and I ended up with over a 1000 virus variations on my machine. The tech told me that and I couldn't believe it! I still think he was exaggerating. But even after F disking the original hard drive, I never got rid of everything and found the drive filling faster than it should. So I now have one new hard drive and am sticking with Norton Antivirus.
Possibly a waste of time to interject here, but... I used to be on dialup. Finally got fed up with waiting on DSL and got cable. We have 3 PCs (on a network) in the house, so I bought one of Netgear's routers with NAT...NAT being a form of firewall. NOW, before this, I had Black Ice installed and was getting audible hits and warnings all the time. Since the the router install, Black Ice has gotten about 5 or 6 hits in 2 months. So...if this is any kind of possibility for you, you should consider it. The router cost me $99. For me, that is worth the added protection I have now...data, sometimes, is priceless. FWIW.
I am so paranoid by reading the posts lately. With all the surfing and email I fool with, I haven't got a virus in a long time. I did get CIH95 (sp) some time ago, but I'm on Windows 2k, so I was immune to that one. I do use a virus scanner (AVG) and a firewall (Kerio) and no problems. Maybe I'm just lucky.
.
I've got a router. NAT-urally. With certain proprietary engines on my machines, I don't dare run the risk of some bored 12-year-old in the Phillipines or Bulgaria or even Wales getting his sticky little fingers on a half million worth of code. This little Barricade allows 4 computers and a printer to network, too. Software firewalls are cheaper if you only have one machine, but even then I'd rather pay a bit more and have the extra security of being invisible. Carolly
ok a little Sues explaination: Most people are familiar with the Grinch. Now the Grinch went to Whosville to steal the presents. Whosville is populated by Whos. Whos live in Whosville. Whosville exists on a flower (yes it is a small town). This flower was found by an elephant who, due to his large ears heard the Whos in whosville and ultimatly saved them from being boiled alive. The elephants name was Horton and this story was told in the Dr. Sues book "Horton Hears a Who" Does that explain it?
circle: I think KattMan's computer has the Who virus. KattMan: In a rare moment of twistedness I just wondered how many times I could get someone to say Who. 10 times. not bad. I apologise, it was wrong of me. - hey, I know who the Grinch is. He stole Chrismas or something like that a couple of years back.
