Subject: Strange problem

NightVoice ( ) posted Wed, 19 June 2002 at 12:54 AM · edited Wed, 25 December 2024 at 8:26 AM

Hi all! :)

Maybe somebody can help me with an odd thing that happens every now and then in Vue. Sometimes I have an object that I import in that acts funny when it gets there. For example, I found this cow .obj file. When I import it in, the controls to scale it or rotate it do not work. What happens is the objects just moves around the scene. So instead of say a cow on a rock, when I scale it to get bigger, it stays the same size but moves anywhere from up a bit to totally into the ground depending on how much I tried to scale or rotate it.

Hope that made some sense. Anybody experience any such reaction for an object?

Yes, this happend to me once or twice. I know exactly what you mean. But every time when I shootdown Vue and reloaded the object in a NEW scene, it was ok. You can try to save it then as a vob nd open it in your started scene. Guitta

Well I gave that a shot but no go. Reboot, new scene or .vobing it didn't work.

One thing I did just discover is that when I d/l'ed the file the cow was on a some kind of flat box. If I leave it on the box, I can size it and rotate it. When I remove the box or ungroup the objects, that is when all heck breaks loose. Strange.

Is it possible there is a connection between these two objects that was saved into the file that causes this? A linking of sorts? I can bypass the problem by making the box a transparent material and hide it, but still curious about what is happening. :)

Select each component of the object and then have a look to make sure none is linked or animated.

Something I noticed is that the "hot area" for scaling in any view isn't exactly where the black "hot spots" are. Sometimes they are off and I have to float the cursor around a bit to find it before clicking by watching the cursor to make sure it changes to a scaling instead of moving cursor. That may be the problem. Would be nice if e-on would fix that prob.

I got caught by something like this on a model of a suitcase I imported once. Turned out that the objects centre point was set a very long way from the object itself. The end result was rotating it had a very odd effect. Mark

Well what is odd is that even using the special upper right corner controls and not the black hot spots and it does the same. Not really sure how to tell if it is linked.

Maybe somebody, when they have some free time, could you check out this model and see? I don't know if I am allowed to post the link to it, so just in case I can't, it is from 3dcafe and is the free models / animals section and called cow.zip which includes a cow.3ds file.

Hopefully you will see that when you remove the box platform it is on, all goes wonky, and I am not just going crazy here. :)

Thanks! :)

I have downloaded the 3ds cow from 3dcafe and imported into Vue. I can perfectly move and rotate it. No funny or strange things happen. I suppose you have Vue 4.06-02? Have a look if you have the latest version of "Vue 4.06-02 Build 255 982". If not, update again. In this object, the "cube" is linked to the cow. You can separate them if you have problems after updating. An interesting thing : If you split the cow file in Vue you get one more but white cow and you can separate and map it easier. Guitta

Forgot to say, to scale the cow you need to split first absolutely, because the links. Guitta

To see if an object is linked, select it and look here.

Hi Nightvoice ! I have my wonky cow, and indeed she is going crazy ! All 3D softwares have different world coordinates. Imported in VUE, some OBJ files and 3DS files are "messed up" because the file contains other informations than simply a "polygon model". By deleting the base object (object01) VUE doesn't know anymore where the pivot position of the model is. here is how to fix this : 1. Import the 3DS file (cow.3ds) in VUE. 2. Expand the group "COW" 3. Select the cow model "Unamed01" and move it outside the "COW" group. 4. Delete the original "COW" group now we need to fix the wrong pivot position... 5. Select the object. 6. Go in the "POSITION" pannel of the OBJECT PROPERTIES menus : set to "0" the X, Y and Z positions. 7. Go in the "PIVOT POSITION" pannel of the OBJECT PROPERTIES menus. Click on "show pivot", you'll notice that the pivot point is totally outside the 3D scene ! To correct this, simply click on the "reset pivot" button. And it's done ! now you can rotate and scale the object whithout any problems. 8. Save this new model as vob, 3ds or obj and throw the other in the bin ! :) Eric

That's very complicated Eric:-). Just split it and it will cancel the link. AND... then you can map the feet, the body and the udder separately:-) Guitta

This is why I love coming here so much. One problem many solutions. :)

I tried out both of your ways and they both work great. Learned about that splitting feature as I have seen it many times but never used it. Also learned more on how that pivot function works in the menu (as well as seeing if a file is linked)

Thank very much! You assistance and detail is greatly appreciated! :)

(P.s. I hope nobody will be dissapointed when they actually see what I do with the cow. When I am finished it will be like a half an inch small on the screen and in the shadows. :) )
