Subject: New to Poser and can't figure it out

Ok... I've been messing around with Poser and the Pro Pack and just can't quite figure out what I'm doing wrong. I'm trying to create a figure with a robe and hair blowing in the wind, but I'm still trying to figure out why I can't get the robe object to get onto to the figure without the figure disappearing. It takes on the pose the figure was in but the original figure disappears. Well I got used to that, so I figured I would try my hand at bending and totally messed up the robe itself. What am I doing wrong and does anyone have any good tutorials they can point me to for this type of thing? I really don't like the fact that I have t odo all the moving of the objects with the little dial things instead of with the mouse in the window. Takes alot of getting used to.

Several resources you can use to learn more - 2 are here; Click on "tutorials" then "Poser" via the link at the top of the page. Click on "Poser Forum FAQ" two lines below the "Welcome to the Poser Forum" line above. A really good site for more info is RonKnights.com - Ron writes terrific tutorials with the complete newcomer to poser in mind - LOTS of screen captures! Read the manual that come with Poser, It's not well thought of overall, but it has a lot of the really basic stuff. (downloadable version available at Curious Labs website, as well (link at top of margin of this page). To address your main problem more directly - to Double-click on a clothing item tells Poser to REPLACE the current character. Also if you highlight the item and click the SINGLE-checkmark below. The DOUBLE-CHECKMARK tells Poser to ADD the selected item to the scene. You'll then need t6o conform them (if it's clothing you're adding - see tutorials or manual for how) to make them pose with the character. The manual will tell you how to use the mouse for posing as well, but most find the dials are incredibly better once you get used to them. Welcome to Poser, and have fun!

Go through the first tutorial in the manual. After you dress the clown and get him walking around in an animation, you'll have touched upon many of the basics: how to parent hair and conform clothes and use props so that they shape themselves to or move with the character... how to set up lights and camera controls... how to adjust materials... and finally render. You can use the editing tools and move the joints with the mouse, but the dials are far more precise! Remember to turn off IK the instant you load a figure... otherwise his feet will stay stuck to the floor and you'll get some weird problems with shoes flying into his crotch or hair going south of Sunday the moment you import a prop. Remember also that when you pose a figure, move the figure and not the clothing (keep an eye on the labels under your view window). If you aply a pose while the boot (for example) is active, you may indeeed get twisted knots instead of a nattily-dressed fellow. The tutorials at Poser Arcana are very good. Many of our specialists have tutorials on their sites. I recommend Traveler at Morphworld.30, Bloodsong at 3dMenagerie, PhilC for clothing and Schlabber for poses. When you have specific questions such as "how can I make a person look like he's made of water?" or "I need fog in my cemetary, and it looks like ice cream... help?" we can send you in the direction of an expert. LrdSatry8 I just took a quick peep at some of your gallery images - you're certainly talented, and I can't imagine someone with your drive taking very long to pick up the basics of poser. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work as your Poser skills grow:-) ...By the way, your comment about making a robe or hair blow in the wind...You'll probably want to seek info and tutorials on the use of Poser Magnets to get satisfactory results there.... Render on! Jerry B

OK... thank you all very much... I'll see what info I can find on the Magnets and I guess I'll have to work on the clothing thing until I get it right. Thanks all... you've been great!

welcome to the world of poser addiction :) I know I'll get my ass kicked for this but also have a look at www.ronknights.com for some really good beginners tutorials. Rob

quick answer to your question your mistake is most likely that you are double clicking on the picture of the clothing item to load it. poser is set up to REPLACE with a double click. to load additional figures you need to select the item with a single click then go to the bottom of your library and click the double check marks.
