Subject: help, please!!

Okay, I know no one really WANTS to help the poor girl who doesn't understand what she's doing, but.... I'd really appreciate it if someone could help me out here. I downloaded a nice free texture for Victoria and I'm trying to get it to render where the frikkin eyebrows, eyelashes and eyes that are on the frikkin texture show up, instead of the heinous lines that look like they were drawn in with permanent marker that Poser decides to randomly insert! I KNOW the skin has eyelashes and eyebrows. I can see them quite well. I know it has eyes because I changed their color in Photoshop. NOW WHY WON'T THEY SHOW UP?! I've been looking through all the tutorials and although they're really quite excellent, none of them tell me what to do when the instructions aren't enough!! I'm having a nervous break down here... Help! Please! Someone! I desperately need help making this work. I'm going to cry. ;D If I make her eyebrows white (don't ask), I can sort of see the eyebrows on the texture. But she looks mighty fugly with big white smears on her head. Someone please help me before I give up for Poser for a month and a half again. ;D

if I'm understanding the problem correctly, the basicic rule of thumb I use is: Eyebrows-gets texture map UpperEyebrows-gets a transpearancy map (set trans to 100% min and max) hope that's what you needed :)

that white smears part let me know exactly what you are doing wrong. But rather than type out a long explanation, go here :) http://205.122.23.229/ronknights/victoria/index.htm

I gave it a try.... Still not working. =/ I have a URL in here... I dunno how this works, so I'm going to just type it out here, too... http://viv.rupture.net/irritating-render.jpg This is after trying the above suggestion. You can see what I mean about the eyebrows and eyelashes. Painful, neh? However, I'm looking at a different render I did with yet another free texture where everything worked just fine. Curious, curious... Could anyone maybe suggest a free texture to me that they think will work ;D and that's very versatile? I can't afford to pay for textures, so I'm looking for a nice base texture that's pretty simple and that the creator doesn't mind me modifying for my own uses. Anyone got any suggestions? Suggestions on either fixing my render or finding another texture are always welcome ;D

Actually, the Ron Knights tutorial is the one that gave me the white smears. =/ I tried using that one and duplicating the settings exactly, but it didn't work.

The 4th Party ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 12:42 AM

have the Eyebrowns and eyelash materials been set to white? sorry I should have included that in my first post, and the eyelash transpearancy will have to be set to 100% min/max, if you dont have a trans map for the lashes and brows, I beleive there is one in the freestuff area 4th

Poppi ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 6:52 AM

download a free .mat file from here....then, use that to set up your brows and lashes. it will set your poser to white...and will set up your brows/lashes. if you want to change textures...just do it the normal way, after you set up the .mat.

PixyPixy , I'm sorry you're having problems. I can guarantee you my screenshots/settings won't cause that problem. I used the DAZ textures and MATs to setup Vicky's textures, then I did a screenshot of the settings. It's foolproof. Let's look at some screenshots together. Upper Eyebrow: the Object Color remains the way it was. Don't change it. Don't use any texture. Set Transparency Minimum and Maximum to 100% Use a transparency map. I'm thinking you might not have the brow/lash transparency map. You can find it in Free Stuff. I'm also thinking your white eyebrow problem is related to the Upper Eyebrows.

Eyebrows: Object color set to white Texture: Use your Vicky texture. Use your bump map if you got one with the texture set.

Eyelashes: Object Color: don't change unless it's required to match with Vicky's hair. I leave it alone here. Texture Map: Use Vicky's Head Texture Transparency Map: use your Vicky eyebrow and eyelash transmap. Transparency settings: Minimum and Maximum to 100% **** I try to gear my tutorials torwards newbies. Sometimes it's hard to do, and sometimes I release another tutorial "filling in some of the blanks." You might want to look at some of the more basic tutorials I made concerning textures. You'll learn more of the "strategy", methods or reasons for setting textures. In the end, I'm a lazy guy. I just love getting textures with MAT files. Just click on an icon, and it's all setup for you. I hope this series of messages helps you. Ron

Everything that Ron just said, and remember to set the Transparency Falloff to 0%. For some reason, it defaults to 16% or some odd number. To summarize: 1. Eyebrows: No Transparency, texture map only 2. Upper Eyebrows: 100% Transparency Min and Max with 0% Falloff This has been a stumper for almost everyone at one time when new to Vicki. Melanie

As another newbie with this program...I can vouche for Ron Knights tutorial here. I was wrestling with figuring out eyebrows and transparency maps for hair all last week....and I think I am finally begining to understand it :)

ronknights ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 8:32 AM

Hey thanks for the compliments and support. I went through and clarified things a bit. Then I made sure to syncrhonize my web site with the copy on my hard drive. It appears I had not done that for awhile.

PixyPixy ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 3:55 PM

Wow, thank you everyone for all the replies. I think the problem may be that I don't have a transparency map. I'll head out looking for one of those. Thanks to everyone for all the replies, and Ron, while I don't doubt your tutorial, I do doubt my ability to make sense of it at 2 in the morning ;D Thanks everyone! I'll see if this helps!

PixyPixy ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 4:50 PM

Okay. Did everything. Eyelashes work now, although I don't like the trans map, so I'll find a different one. But it does work, and that's what matters. The eyebrows still don't work though. =/ Ron, I don't know if you have a different version of Poser than I do, or if I'm doing something wrong and totally missing it... But it's just not working. ::cries:: This is the first time I've had this problem. Admittedly, I've only worked with one other texture, but with the other texture, I had no problems with getting everything to work just fine without any transparency or anything. Could it be a problem with this texture, or a problem with me? ;D The other texture I got to work with it, although really an awesome texture, just isn't the sort of texture you use for lots of things. (It was Death, from free stuff, if you're wondering. Excellent texture, just not good for making a really happy, healthy person. ;D)

ronknights ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 6:07 PM

I'm not sure what to say. I have Poser 4.03, and Poser Pro Pack in separate installations. They both work. I use the DAZ Vicky textures for now, but will use other textures once I get braver. I wonder if some textures don't work with some transparency maps? Maybe sometimes when someone creates a texture, they create their own transparency map?

darkphoenix ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 8:05 PM

If you notice Ron's tutorial, the transparency has strangly been left out of the eyebrows. Apply the same transparency map to it you applied to everything else. If they dissappear entirely, cut and paste the transparency your using fo the upper eybrows on the eyebrows section as well.

Poppi ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 8:15 PM

Okay...There do not seem to be any mat files for vicki, in freestuff, anymore. (This site has undergone ALOT of changes, and, many have left...and they took their "toys"!!!) Here is a link to a decent group of textures that all come with .mat files. I have some more, if you need them. how to use? just load your vicki...and then go to poses...you will find your new texure, with its mat file, there. then, if you don't want to use the texture that you downloaded for the .mat file...simply do it manually. Sorry, blackhearted...i am just trying to help and a search for eowyn did not show anything.....I know...you're pissed...but somewhere in that black heart you understand, yes? Pop...Pop...Poppi!!!

Spit ( ) posted Tue, 25 June 2002 at 4:20 AM

I don't bother with the Upper Eyebrows..if you don't have or like the transparency map for it just set Vicky's head dial BrowsIn=1.000 or BrowsGone-1.000 for V2 and the other figures. Then don't mess with UpperEyebrows at all in the Materials Screen. Forget they're there. For Eyebrows...NO transparency. Set the color to the same color as the rest of the face (usually white) and use the same texture map as the rest of the Head. That's it. Really simple.
