Subject: Organizing files in poser

RawArt ( ) posted Fri, 28 June 2002 at 5:57 AM · edited Sun, 02 February 2025 at 3:44 AM

Ok...my poser prop and figure (and stuff) collection is begining to grow....but I have noticed that when I unzip the stuff I download into poser, sometimes they objects get thrown into "weird" sections. Like eye textures in the "poses" section or clothing in the "figures" section..etc. Is there any way I can effectivly move these folders into places where I feel they would be better suited? (such as eye textures into the "faces" section). I tried simply grabbing the folder in windows explorer and moving it...but in so doing, all the icons as to what was supposed to be in that folder dissappeared in its new position (so I quickly moved it back). Is there any way I can effectivly manage my files in this way? Rawn

you can arrange them in the libraries folder as you wish with windows explorer, but not with poser running, you have to start poser after re-arranging or it won't know where to find the files. ~g~ I move stuff around like that all the time.

It all depends on what kind of files you are installing. Where things are supposed to go depends on the file extension. Clothes are cr2 files, and should go in the Characters sub-folder in the folder Libraries. Clothes usually has an obj-file as well, which belongs in the Geometries folder. If files relating to eye textures end up in the Poses folder, it's probably MAT-files, files that loads the corresponding texture to the figure. This is normal. No files related to eyes should be in the Faces section, this section is just for files that applies face poses. You can to some degree move folders between sections, but you need to change the file extension, otherwise the files will be invisible in Poser. If you move files from the Pose section to the Face section you need to change the file extension from .pz2 to .fc2. Pose, Face, Hand and Camera files are logically the same type of files, so theoretically they can be placed in any of these folders, as long as you change the file extension to the one that Poser will recognize as belonging to that section.

Jaqui, when you have shuffled your files around, you just need to exit that folder in Poser end then choose it again for the files to appear. No need to re-start. As an example, if you have the Pose section open in Poser and then start to re-arrange the files in Explorer, you can just open the Character section (or whatever) and the re-select Pose for the files to appear. This might depend on operating system, but it works like that for me under Win2k and XP.

It's not really safe to unzip your downloads directly into Poser. You never know exactly how things were setup. The downloads might have been zipped with folder options, or everything might have been in one folder. The downloads might have been put in the wrong folders, or the wrong structure. The image on the left represents the Default Metacreations installation. Some Poser installations begin with Curious Labs. If you're organizing a zip download, you can't start with either one, because it would be thrown off if you did. Many zipped downloads start with Runtime and duplicate the Poser file structure from there. In the second image, someone started with Poser 4 as the first folder, you entire installation will be screwed up. Files will go where they don't belong. In the third image, someone used a lower case "r" in Runtime. That won't work either. In the end you really need to unzip to a temporary folder and look over your download. You can always copy from there. Most of us prefer to reorganize things when we can.

Kelderek, wine under linux, to run any m$ based app. ~g~ not M$ crashware at all. so not version of windows.

Agreed, Ron, I never unzip directly into the Poser folder. I always unzip in a separate folder and then move everything manually into the Poser folder. If the zip-file is correctly structured, this goes very fast. If it's not, then it's pretty easy to correct it in the process!

Hi... PBooost will help you to re-order your libraries in a way more tailored to your own working practices... And it keeps everything Poser Legal... ie. In the right places!!! It also can help by "hiding" portions of your libraries so you can find what you're looking for in Poser. PBooost is a marketplace item... do have a look and see if you think it will be of use to you! Tutorial: http://www.horseless-headsmen.co.uk/PBooostTutorial/PBooostTutorial.htm Howard:)

Thank you all I guess you are right in that it would be wise to not directly unzip into poser....sighh...I guess that explains why i have 2 runtime folders now (maybe one has an uppercase "R") I will have to check that out when i get home. That PBoost looks very interesting...I will definatly download that when I get home. Thank you all very much.

But, PBooost still is not XP compatible... and with more and more system switching that sort of cripples it, doesn't it? The moment it's XP, I'd jump to get it, LOL!

Hmmm... PBooost itself IS XP compatible... In fact, I've written it on a machine running XP. With some XP installations, Windows locks the runtime folders while Poser is running (the folders, not the files!) so PBooost, on these systems, is slightly limited. However, see the customer feedback against PB... it's all from XP users! Try the PBooost NT Compatibility tester and see how your system stacks up. You might be surprised! Even if you can't switch banks while Poser is running, you can still enjoy many benifits.

Oh, I see... I stand corrected, LOL! (Off to get the NT Tester...)

Yes, as a PBooost beta tester, I can vouch for the compatability. You learn to live with the Bank Switching Limitation, and make use of the many other great features. And Howard is always planning more enhancements!

Just have a couple of questions re PBoost if I may? I'm using XP and not sure yet but here they are... (1) I have 3 poser installations and about 45 gigs of data total on 2 partitions...do I have to wait for PBoost to go through all this and find Poser when it's installing? or can you cancel out and find the Poser installation you want to use yourself? (like you can with DAZ installer) (2) In my main Poser installation I keep both rsr and png and want to continue to do so. Poser 4 needs the rsr and I like the png for viewing in Explorer. That means everything shows up twice? Thanks

hogwarden ( ) posted Fri, 28 June 2002 at 10:50 AM

Hi, Spit... 1:On first running, PBooost will first find the path to your most recently installed copy of Poser...(takes about 1 milli-second!) then it asks you if this is the Poser you wish to work with. You can point it to a different copy of Poser at this stage. This takes no extra time at all! During use, if you need to change PBooost to another Poser installation, click "Change Poser Path" in the menu and find the Poser you wish to use PBooost with. 2:PBooost is half expecting people to have PNGs and RSRs together and this causes no problems! H:)

Thanks for the quick reply! It's sounding better and better!

I unzip directly and also manually unzip-- it depends on the way the path files are set up. And if you are running WinZip, you can check the path files first then quickly unzip those that are correct, then go back and do the ones that are all bollixed up-- usually the freebies. I have had minimal problems unzipping products I've purchased at Renderosity. But I check every path anyway. It takes less time than moving everything by hand afterwards. Then I go through the stuff and use P3Do's png to rsr so I can see what I've just downloaded in the libraries. It's a full time job wrassling the libraries. Emily
