Subject: modeling and textures

i'm having problems with texture and remodeling figures. if i want to make for example a self portrait(and to make it look realistic) and i have a pic of me, i have a model, i apply my 'texture' on the model and get a model that has my skin.. but, it doesnt look like me. so, how can i make the face look like mine? do i need to buid a model by some way or what? is there a way to deform models or buid my own?

It depends on what models you're using. I assume you're doing this in Poser and you're a beginner. If you have Poser 4, your figures will be the P4 male or female. Click on the model's face and look at the parameter dials for that body part. You'll see a list of different dials for morph targets. Turn a dial and you'll see the effect on screen, like a bigger nose, wider mouth, etc. This works for most body parts. The basic P4 models don't have a lot of morph targets, so you can either download MTs (usually free) or buy the Vicki/Mike models from DAZ. They have a far bigger range of morphs you can use. so the Viki/Mike models are not free? i'm a bit confused with these morph things.. what are those exactly and what are they used for? i know i can change some things in the figure using those scales, but some things like ears or cheeks or such in some figures are not editable.. and, when i have several figures in one sheet, like a body with several dress items, i cant always find the right item with the mouse cursor. it's as if parts are dissapearing.. i am using poser4, and with this program i'm a beginner. i wanted to make a self portrait, some fantasy pic with a model that looks like me, the problem is that i dont know how to achieve that real 'me' look. i can make the texture look like my skin, but no more than that. can make the face look like mine.

if you were to export the head(or any other body part) from poser (as a morph target .obj)to a 3d application (there are free ones out there, in mags and such) and then alter the mesh of the 'head' - say pull out the nose - without changing the number of vertices. You could then go back to poser select the head of the figure, press ctrl+I and select the 'head'.obj that you altered as a 'Morph Target'. A dial will be created and you can morph between the two shapes of head. IE the nose will get bigger. for a simple, free 3d application for poser morphs try 'Anim8or'. As with anything it takes practice but you'll soon find that you are coming along in leaps and bounds!

thanks for the link, but this program doesnt want to open on my comp.. some bugs i guess.. can you reccomend another program like that?

Try this link, Elantrial. This is a site that has hundreds of free morphs. Just make sure you download them for the right figure, then read the instructions or refer to the manual on how to add a morph target to your figure. mac

To answer your other questions. No, Mike and Vicki are not free. They're more advanced versions of the normal poser figures and can only be bought seperately (http/www.dax3d.com) A morph target is simply a deformation of a body part. Like, if I make the nose wider or bigger in another program, I can save that change as a morph target and import it into poser. It then appears in the parameter dials list alongside the document window. Cheeks and ears may not have morph targets in poser, but if you go to the site above you'll find custom-made morphs for them. If you have trouble selecting body parts, use the menu just below the document window. Click on the name of your figure (on the far left), then next to it, click on the other name and when the list appears. select the body part you want. A lot of things in poser are easier in the menus, than with the mouse, especially if body parts are hidden under something else. mac

If you're using a PC, MilkShape works well for morph creation on the basic Poser figures. It's a $20 software program, but you can download and try it out first for 30 days with no restrictions.
