It really seems as though the community could use a Poser treat right about now. Weve decided that it might be a good time to pull back the drapes a little bit and show a few tidbits that were working on in that elusive next release of Poser. This doesnt mean its ready; were still hard at work, and there is still a lot to do. Its not a sign of a soon-to-be-made announcement either. The community has a pretty good inkling about when things usually and formally happen when it comes to 3D, and until then there, wont be any deeper formal statements. I hope that what were going to show will help to sooth some of the anxieties that are gurgling around in the threads below. Just as a note, I know our website is sorely out of date, and customer service will have a standard reply to any and all questions on the subject.everyone is working on other things for the time being, so the community is the only place youll find this information and content. Sincerely, Steve Cooper aka kupa

Thanks Steve! Sounds cool! (Psst...It's Legume's armadillo isn't it?) ;-) Dave :-)

Here's an early test of long, strand based hair on one of the new P5 figures. It's approximately 10,000 strands, with one hair group, styled minimally to pull the hair to the sides and back.

davidm ( ) posted Tue, 02 July 2002 at 4:47 PM

WOW! That look's amazing!!! Dave :-)

davidm ( ) posted Tue, 02 July 2002 at 4:59 PM

That is SO COOL!!! So is this a hair generation system Steve, like those fancy plugins for Lightwave etc? Dave :-)

chrisf ( ) posted Tue, 02 July 2002 at 4:59 PM

Mr. Cooper: The image looks great, will this feature add a significant amount of time to render, and will it make additional demands on system ram? chrisf.

kupa ( ) posted Tue, 02 July 2002 at 4:59 PM

hmmm, is that foreground blurring depth of field? ahhh, yes, it is!

ronstuff ( ) posted Tue, 02 July 2002 at 5:00 PM

VERY EXCITING! Looks FABULOUS How big is the Cr2? or pz3 with this hair and a P5 figure? and how long does it take to render? Needless to say, it is an awesome breakthrough, and this feature alone will be worth the upgrade. Now how about making a "EXPORT" button that encodes customized objects, references external copyrighted mesh and morphs, and packages all original texture maps into a single folder - all ready for free distribution? Now that would really ease this community.

Puntomaus ( ) posted Tue, 02 July 2002 at 5:01 PM

Wow, thanks for posting this. This hair is amazing and the P5 model looks really cool too.
I just wondered if we can color each strand seperateley? ;-).

Depth of field too??!!! FABULOUS!!! :-) Dave :-)

Attached Link: http://www.renderosity.com/~pzr/poser5/skirt1.avi

so maybe all this is exciting to see, but I can hear a little voice out there asking what the cloth looks like... here's a sample, done very early, using the original P4 woman, in Sinead O'Conner mode, with a bvh and a simple skirt and top... sorry. you'll need divx to view this AVI...

doerp ( ) posted Tue, 02 July 2002 at 5:09 PM

Wow... do I need a NASA computer or will it work also on my ol BluenWhite? Sascha

...here's another cute little flick. It's a moving story about a sphere, a hairy rug, and gravity.

Cheers ( ) posted Tue, 02 July 2002 at 5:17 PM

Hmmmmmm, the hair looks procedural to me Steve...reminds me of Joe Alter's Shave & Haircut. Whatever it is, it looks as if you are doing a good job ;o) Cheers

Ha-ha, kupa! Did you really think you could post something like this and not get a zillion questions fired at you? I just wondered if we can color each strand seperateley? LOL You'll be answering these till doomsday! Seriously, it looks great and no doubt we'll all need new hard-core ultra-fast PCs to use poser 5. In the meantime, would I be right in thinking that this hair system stems from the 'Tree Generator' in poser 4? mac

davidm ( ) posted Tue, 02 July 2002 at 5:19 PM

Wow! These are great!!! Poser 5 is gonna be an animator's dream!!! :-) Dave :-)

ronmolina ( ) posted Tue, 02 July 2002 at 5:28 PM

I cant wait. Will it work with LightWave? Is there going to be a ProPack update I should have asked. Ron

hauksdottir ( ) posted Tue, 02 July 2002 at 5:31 PM

Guys, I still have duct tape over my mouth. (Whoever makes duct tape in flavors will be the next Mr Gates. This stuff tastes terrible!) But, yes, hair is part of what Kupa showed us (although these are new pictures)... and why our grins are ear-to-ear and then some. I have a pretty good vocabulary, but words such as "awesome" just barely describe what's in store for us. Carolly

Jack D. Kammerer ( ) posted Tue, 02 July 2002 at 5:33 PM

Maclean, I think I can answer this (hope he isn't stepping on Steve's toes by saying this)... The image that has the red and blue polygons with the white trimming, the way it was explained to me is that you are able to paint/color your polygons to the color that you want the hair to come out being. The blue polys will produces blue stands, the red red strands and the white outline white strands. These polys can be multicolored to produce realistic hair coloring. Hope that helps. Jack

a few last images for now... This is a screen cap of the main UI. Great texture map on that guy, he's got the right DNA I guess. ;-)

depakotez ( ) posted Tue, 02 July 2002 at 5:35 PM

So does that mean that there may still be a need/ability to create "Hair" textures for this hair, but more like procedural texture settings, and Maps? Tom

Looks incredible, can't wait for P5 to hit the shelves. I suppose I have the same question as everyone else though... any thoughts on what the CPU and RAM requirements are going to be? Just wondering if I should start pricing Pentium 4 2.4 with 2gb of RAM or should I wait for Pentium 5 :) NW316

gryffnn ( ) posted Tue, 02 July 2002 at 5:44 PM

Steve, you folks are absolutely the greatest! But can you please, please tell us Mac-ites what we most want to know - do we need to upgrade to OSX? Would sure like to know if we should spend some of the wait getting the hardware and software playing together well, so we can dive in when Poser 5 is ready! Can't wait to get back to my animations. (You know my other big question...) Elisa/gryffnn

maclean ( ) posted Tue, 02 July 2002 at 5:51 PM

Jack, Thanks for the explanation on coloring strands. In fact, I wasn't actually asking the question. I was (tongue-in-cheek) quoting from someone's post above me. But it sure was interesting all the same! What I was asking was 'Is this hair an evolution of poser 4's tree generator?' If it is, it's come a long way! mac

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Tue, 02 July 2002 at 6:10 PM

The basic DivX codec is all you need to play the videos; it's free, without adware/spyware. No need for the Pro versions unless you want to use some extra features when encoding your own videos.

I want to see this hair feature used on the cat.

[nitpick]
Tiny bit of poke-through ... hip through skirt ... one or two frames, about halfway through the first video.
[/nitpick]

I trust you've made further refinements, since this was an early render. Ah, who cares, beats what we've got now. Saving my pennies ....

LadyTieryn ( ) posted Tue, 02 July 2002 at 6:11 PM

This is so cool. From the looks of the texture map we're even gonna get to have harry balls :)

amberf ( ) posted Tue, 02 July 2002 at 6:15 PM

Is that the same mapping as mike's? And what's the putty tool for? Does that have something to do with morphs? Is this the default guy?

wolf359 ( ) posted Tue, 02 July 2002 at 6:15 PM

IM fully migrated to OSX even mac mimic runs nativley in OSX
so when poser 5 arrives for OSX i will no longer have any legitimate reason to boot from separate the OS9 drive.
i wiil strip it down to a minimum system and use the space for
poser animation storage.

this is very good to see

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Tue, 02 July 2002 at 6:21 PM

Oooh, displacement mapping! Bump maps on steroids!! kupa, have you seen the tech demos for hardware displacement mapping in Matrox's new graphics cards? My, my, look at all the physics settings for that hair. :) Enabling collision detection for all those strands should really give a processor a workout.
