Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 10 1:16 pm)
dont worry about the rsr. take the image you want to use, any image is good, and convert it to png of the same size as ll the rest. Ten put in in the same location as your cr2 file and give it the same name as the cr2. Dont change your image file to rsr, an rsr is not really an image file, its a geometry file. Your library will consist of 3 files. for example, mike.cr2, mike.rsr, and mike.png. The png will be your image file, as far as i know it only looks at the rsr if no png is present. The rsr just makes loading a figure faster by using the rsr instead of the geometry file. If you have PPP, i dont think rsr's are even used at all anymore.
Blackhearted's .png 's look like the ones Poser 4.03 creates automatically when you save your figure or pose or whatever. Dalinise's look like rendered images. If you want to use rendered images as .rsr's, here's a basic method. Let's say you want to for example make a new .rsr for your Carly character. This is a simple method that consists of several steps - using the .rsr converter might be easier but if you're a newbie (dunno if you are :), you might like this way. 1. Make sure your working window is a perfect square, mine is 780x780, for example. 2. Render the image you want to appear as the .rsr 3. Save your rendered image and then import it to Poser as a background image. 4. Then, simply turn the camera so that you can only see the background, or make your figure invisible. 5. Add the figure or whatever in your library, but use a different folder than where the original figure is. This way you can give your new .rsr the correct name right away. 6. Go to Windows Explorer and move the new .rsr to the original folder and let it overwrite the old one. Simply delete the new figure you just saved, you only needed the new .rsr, right? :) phew
Dark Phoenix, that's not right! Thumbnail RSR files in the libraries folder are MAC PICT image files with a different hgeader, ranamed "RSR". The RSR's in the Geometries folder are Geometry binaries. Poser4 cannot see png thumbnails, they're only for Propack. Alternatively to Eowyn's suggestion, this works too, and is nice and quick... 1) render the image you want as the thumb any size, save it. 2) crop and resize to 91x91 square in Photoshop/PSP etc. 3) Save as MAC PICT format. 4) get RSRConverter, freeware, and convert the Pict to RSR. 5) save over the top of the crappy RSR you want to change. H:)
I finally worked out an easy way to get both rsr and png. Render your image, take it into Photoshop and resize to 91 x 91 pixels. Make sure the alpha channel is a black square and then save as a png. Open P3d0Explorer, go to tools and convert all the png's in the directory to rsr's in one go. (Beats using RSRConverter which only does one at a time.) Mada
...faith, trust and pixiedust
Thanks folks for all the info and I realize now I should've added some extra - I'm on Poser 4.03 (not Pro Pack) on a Windows system. So, while the left images are .png, P4 does not create those by default and cannot (will not?) read them if they are just pasted in to replace the normally generated .rsr files. sigh I already tried it...
Anyhoo - I'm gonna give that RSRConverter a go to see how I like it - hopefully it's simple......like me ;)
I assume ProPack automatically makes PNGs from RSRs for evey file that doesn't have one when that library is opened. That is how it seems to work, anyway. However, if you are doing Freestuff or for-sale items you are doing a disservice by putting your stuff up with only PNGs, there has to be RSRs too, for all the Poser 4 users. Yeah, it would be nice if RSR Converter had some kind of batch mode!

I want an alternate image for the generated .rsr. How do I replace it?? I've tried changing the names of the image file I want to use to .rsr or save it as .png then replacing the normal .rsr with it, but that doesn't appear to work.
In the screenshots shown, the left side (Blackhearted's Girl Next Door) show .png files - the right side (Dalinise's Carly) show .rsr files. They're obviously (at least to my addled brain) not the ones that are generated automatically by Poser.
Can someone please explain - as if to a small child of two - how I can do this???
