Subject: Trouble with Jim Burton's Las Vegas Hair

I just picked up Las Vegas hair from DAZ, and if I had any, I'd have pulled all of mine out by now!

When I go to add the hair to Poser, the cursor shows busy, but nothing happens; if I alt-tab to the desktop or Win explorer then pop back the hair shows up. Quirky, but I can deal with that. However, once the hair shows up and I try to conform it to Vic or whomever, the "conform to" dialog box hangs. I can click on "Ok" all day and nothing happens, but if I click on cancel, the box will disappear, but all my menu items (including conform to) become "greyed out".

This is happening on a Compaq Presario running 98se, amd k6-2 550mHz with 128meg ram. I know the ram is a bit on the low side, but I've handled much larger files in poser successfuly.

Any advise would be appreciated, hate to think I just blew $20.

Oh no! Trouble in River city! It should work O.K. with 128 RAM, have you looked in the GeometriesPoseable Hair folder and seen if there is a RSR? If there is delete it and give Poser another shot at creating it, I've seen Poser sort of do a mini-crash and write a bad one on the first try. The model is about the size of Victoria, so if you can run two Vickies you should be able to run it O.K.. If all else fails I'll make you a LV Hair LT CR2 with some of the bigger morphs removed, email me you address, I'm at burtonj@bucks.edu

I'm going to try the hair on my other machine (the above is a laptop) it has 256 meg, so I'll let you know. Thanks so much for the rapid support!!!

Well, it worked fine on my desktop at home, so it's either a memory issue (but I've had as many as four vic/mikes at once) or some compatibility issue with the laptop. I'll try porting over both the .obj and .rsr to the laptop... maybe the original installation file got screwy? Needless to say, thanks again for your quick response. Now that I know the hair works, I may have to take a look at what those other cities have to offer...

I've been enjoying the wonderful Las Vegas hair since I bought it, and fortunately I haven't had any of Nukeboy's problems. Even though I have a GB of RAM, I like the idea of the "lite" LT version Jim offered to make. I would use the LT hair on Reduced Resolution Vickie(s) to populate my backgrounds. To save you the trouble, Jim, can I use Morph Manager to remove the bigger morphs? If so, which morphs would you recommend removing? Thanks, Richard

I've had a somewhat different problem with the hair on a single Vicky using a 512 mb 1ghz PC running win 2000. When ever I tried rendering an image with it the camera angle/distance would change. It almost looked like an aquarium being filled with water during the rendering process.
Anyways I wrote Daz and was informed by Dan that it had been updated since the release. But when I went to the list of updates page, clicking on the LV hair just brought me back to the products page. I guess I must be missing something.
Has anyone else had this problem with the hair and/or know where the update is supposed to be and if it'll fix this problem?

Yeah, let me make one up, I already have one for the San Fran hair around somewhere... Ther OBJ will be the same size, but I'll delete some of the less popular morphs, and cut the CR2 size in half or so. The advantge of me doing it is I know which ones are the biggees! No, the LV hair hasn't been updated yet, Dan might be confusing it with the SF hair (that has, just recently)

I bought Jim Burton's LV Hair last week... and love it! Jim, if you do an update might I suggest adding a morph to allow creating more fullness to the hair at the back of the head and neck (i.e., mid-level Z-axis kind of thickness)? My models look great with the hair from the front and back, but not as good from the side since their hair looks kind of plastered against the back of their nape. I tried scaling up the Z scale, but then the hair on top of the head gets too large on the Z axis. But overall well worth the $!! Thanks... TG

I think over at PoserPros there are some free morphs for L.Vegas hair. That take care of fullness etc. There 3 differant morphs all very good.

This will be at DAZ eventually, you guys get first crack at it, though. It is a new CR2, a little under half the original size, mostly I pulled the less important morphs, but I also added a new "tail" ghost part, similar to what the San Fran Hair just got in it's upgrade, NOTE- REGULAR LAS VEGAS HAIR REQUIRED, NO MESH IN ZIP!

While I was at it, I did some morphs- there are two in the Zip, one thickens the entire back of the hair and pulls it rearward a little, the other pulls back the area behind the neck, straightening the outward curve in that section. See what you think, I'm eventually going to have a Mk II upgrade for the full hair, including th enew tail part as well as other things, this is just a teaser for now! I've got alot of others to update first though, including the Hollywood hair.

Go to DAZ's FAQ/Update page. It's listed BEFORE you enter the store. There is an update for the San Francisco Hair dated 6/21/02.

Jim, Thank you! I really appreciate your quick and generous response to our requests. These enhancements to the Las Vegas hair make an already great product even better, and I plan to try out the LT version and the new morphs on a current animation project. I hope this doesn't seem ungrateful, but I'd like to suggest a Windblown or Billowing Morph for LV hair's sides. This might only be useful to us animators, but I would love to see my models' hair fluttering softly in the breeze as they walk. Thanks, Richard

Yeah, let me check on that, I don't know if they forgot the SF hair update or not but I'll remind them. Last time I checked it was on the update page but there was no actual link to download it. Richard, Oh, my that might be a tough one to do, all those curls! I'll think about it, though! Incidently, the Las Vegas LT one is going to be up at DAZ, too.

Thanks for the new LE version! Alas, it still no workie on my laptop. The PC gremlins are definitely to blame, but as Ricky Java mentions, the "lite" version will be great for those "large" parties...

Your Welcome Nukeboy, sorry it didn't work. Incidently, have you tried manually setting your virtual memory? I think it is Control Panel/System/Performance on Win 98, a higher or lower setting might help. I'd suggest 256 or 512 Mb or so for a start.
