Subject: The Real June Challenge - The Old Standbys

oneironaut ( ) posted Fri, 05 July 2002 at 10:49 PM · edited Thu, 14 November 2024 at 4:47 AM

Thanks again, folks, and especially RimRunner for being so patient. Okay, here goes.

I challenge you to take those old standbys, the primitives -- the basic sphere, cube, torus, cylinder, cone and their ilk -- and make them interesting again. You can use as many or as few of the above in your image(s) as you please, as well as as many or as few other objects, lights, textures, materials, Boolean operations and any other dirty tricks you may have up your sleeve. One restriction: the primitives must be recognizable. So if you're using a cube, for example, you may distort it to your heart's content so long as it still has six sides and eight vertices, but not into, say, a fish, unless there's some other primitive in the scene. (Or unless it's a cube-shaped fish.)

Have fun. :)

Just playing with mats when I saw what the challenge was, so here it is.

a rework of one i put in the Bryce gallery a few days ago. the TV is a cube (with additions) the Rubik's Cube is lots of cubes as is the Sliding Tile Puzzle. the chair is also cubes, and the table is a cube with cylinders for the legs. the wires for the joysticks are loads and loads of cylinders. the Globe is a sphere with toruses (tori ?) and cylinders. the magazine is a cube with a bitmap as is the poster. realy, the only none bryce stuff is the spitfire (as seen last month) and the figure (DFX import and poser import)

oneironaut ( ) posted Mon, 08 July 2002 at 4:09 PM

I feel the need to point out that, under normal circumstances, I do in fact know all the names of the months and their order. No, really. They made me memorise them in school and everything. I thought 'July', typed 'June' -- ah, the joys of human error. And also to point out, a bit belatedly, that 2D and 2.5D artists are absolutely encouraged to join, though from what I remember from art class, the prospect of drawing more spheres and cubes may not exactly entrance them. And, finally, that this is all very exciting and the entries are great, even if Baztd did beat me to the puzzlebox idea. Sigh. ;)

Here is my entry, created entirely in terragen. The primatives are cubes and cylinders which combine to create the castle. The only post production work that I did was to cut a door in the side of the castle with paintshop

Baztd ( ) posted Tue, 09 July 2002 at 3:04 PM

even if Baztd did beat me to the puzzlebox idea.<< sorry ;o) it was there, it had to be used. (i have one sat next to the PC)

Well this is my next try. I tried a little new car concept with just using primitives except for background of course. This was done in Bryce.

Neat stuff. Kind of retro-3D. :D This is going to be a very interesting challenge... and a hard choice when it comes to voting. LOL!!

Howdy all, I'm still new to Bryce and Renderosity, but I thought I would throw in my 2 cents worth. Here's something I put together just to see what effects different textures would have on primitives. Linda

3 spheres and a torus, all w/ reflective surfaces. This may not be recognizeable enuff to qualify...

oneironaut ( ) posted Sat, 13 July 2002 at 7:29 PM

Hmm, re: Gorodin. I see some things in there that look enough like tori, even if they're just reflections of the actual torus, for me to give it a tentative yes. Plus it's, y'know, gorgeous.

This will probably be the last I submit for this challenge...

This is actually the same geometry as the last submission. Different camera angle, different material, volumetric atmosphere... At least you can recognize some of the primitives...

RaysOfLight ( ) posted Fri, 26 July 2002 at 9:16 PM

scenes like that must take ages to put together like, making it so it doesn't like they're all running into each other and suddenly disappearing, giving it depth and all that it's pretty awesome

RimRunner ( ) posted Mon, 29 July 2002 at 10:33 PM

Ok, submission time is up... and now it's time to Vote for your fave'... and this isn't going to be an easy one by any means! Lots and Lots of great entries this month.... So.. to start things off... My Vote goes to: pidjy with the boxing Primitives. - James

RaysOfLight ( ) posted Tue, 30 July 2002 at 12:59 AM

i guess i should specify too i vote for the boxing primitives of pidgy really cool piece of work :) me give congradulations to ijack999 as well though. even though there can only be one winner, both of them did an awesome job of this challenge

Baztd ( ) posted Tue, 30 July 2002 at 3:23 AM

Yup, it has to be Pidjy's boxers. a perfect representation of the challenge if you ask me.

Kate ( ) posted Tue, 30 July 2002 at 8:24 AM
