Subject: California Dreaming

Okay, now that the rush of excitement is over (or at least marginally), there was something that really bothered me about a third of the way down this thread: The macintosh version will ship "sometime after" the PC version Guys, at the risk of sounding like a grinch, I'm getting a little tired of Mac being treated like a poor second-cousin to the Big Blue IBM. We Mac folk may be a niche market, but that's only because the software developers ignore Mac implementation and then feign innocence when we start hurling brickbats at them, such as Adobe and their Atmosphere. It's a frigging vicious cycle -- Mac comes out with better and better machines which are faster and more efficient than PCs, which means increased purchase and a larger market share -- only to have software developers keep pushing us off and then wondering why their Mac sales aren't what they should be. Yes, I know you're working on a Mac version, which is great. But let's make it a timely second-string release, okay?

The head room doesn't look that much more sophisticated than the customize player setup in NHL 2001, which sold for about $40 when it first came out. I'm surprised it wasn't done sooner.

i'm a 15 year old enthusiast who uses the free copy of pser 3 I got on a magazine. That, to put it bluntly, looks like an industrial app now. Any chance of a sub-200 price tag :)

fls13, The Head Room looks alot like "Morph" - a morphing software that dissappeared about 5 years ago. I still have it. It was very good ad morphing from one image to another - with a little care. It was used very effectively in a Micheal Jackson video. I'd guess that they've set up some kind of presets/templates that match the models heads. You'd define specified areas on the actual face photo and the software morphs it to match the template/preset. Then it could be applied predicatably.

Before they made me they broke the mold!

...and I thought Curious Labs was "dead" ...hope they put sometin out by xmas

Philywebrider ( ) posted Wed, 10 July 2002 at 3:30 AM

Daz3d has a product called "Rebel VR Hair", that they say is based on CL's new technology. Looks like P5's products are on their way. This is the first P5 item I have seen. Anyboy recognize the figure modeling the hair?

Philywebrider ( ) posted Wed, 10 July 2002 at 3:32 AM

Any body else see any P5 products?

MadYuri ( ) posted Wed, 10 July 2002 at 5:18 AM

...that they say is based on CL's new technology. Hehe, don't believe this marketing buzz. The "Rebel VR Hair" is a transmapped hair like many others and it works in P4 just like it will work in P5. But it is quite nice/realistic.

WHAT will the requirements for Poser 5 be? It might be time I got another computer. The answer for my question is probably in here somewhere, but lazyness has the better of me.

c1rcle ( ) posted Wed, 10 July 2002 at 8:48 AM

Bobasaur I've got that morphing software somewhere on cd too, I had great fun using it to merge my friends together to see what their kids would look like :) don't know why I didn't spot it earlier myself, the one I've got is called Morphman I think. My kids are going to be poserised first with the new system then me :) Rob

Bobasaur ( ) posted Wed, 10 July 2002 at 7:42 PM

Morph was a nice piece of software - simple to understand and pretty quick. I'm not sure if "Elastic Reality" is still around but it does the same thing.

PLEASE MAKE THE MAC VERSION AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;-)

sgreco ( ) posted Wed, 10 July 2002 at 11:53 PM

:::gets up off the floor::: WOW sign me up!! But ok, here's my brief wishlist: 1) Id surely like to see a very simple method of organizing files. If all we already own (MAT files, clothes etc) are still useable (and they'd surely better be) it would be quite nice to, in poser, check a series of checkboxes next to all of the textures currently clogging up our POSES tab and with a single click have them all neatly moved into that LUSCIOUS new MATERIALS tab (etc). This would be a MAHOR benefit to those of us with huge numbers of added goodies. 2) If somehow possible, and I know this is likely NOT going to make it in but what the hey, it IS a WISHlist after all, can you make it so that when you have a TRANSMAP active (by active I mean with all transparency sliders at maximum) that ONLY the tranprarent portions of an item are "greyed out" and not the entire object? This would make this alot easier to work with and, well, it would stop shocking my mom to see everyone nekkid when theyre actually wearing clothes. 3) IF the MATERIALS tab pictured is not for a list of textures, transparencies and bumpmaps but instead intended to display RENDER MATERIALS as it is called now in p4, can there possibly be a tab just for textures etc? Poses and textures are 2 of the busiest areas for us and lumping them all into "POSES" makes for a loooooong list to scroll through. Pretty please? well thats my amazingly brief list and do let me reiterate: WOW! The movie with the dancing sinead o'connor blew me away. That kind of clothing effect is FAN-TASTIC. Good job to all concerned, you've really earned your gold stars for this update!

c1rcle ( ) posted Thu, 11 July 2002 at 1:28 AM

sgreco you might want to look at the pictures again, it looks very much like most of what you've asked for is already there in on form or another. Rob

speediejm ( ) posted Thu, 11 July 2002 at 6:39 AM

One thing will it still use software real time rendering or will you switch to Nvidia GeForce 3 t&l with pixil shading and vertix shading?

c1rcle ( ) posted Thu, 11 July 2002 at 7:27 AM

I hope not I'm stuck with a GeForce2 anyway I've been told here more than once it can't be done. Rob

speediejm ( ) posted Thu, 11 July 2002 at 7:44 AM

one day we wont have to render with our geforce cards they can do shadows soft shadows bump maps ANYTHING

Webkeeper ( ) posted Fri, 12 July 2002 at 9:19 PM

Question abt the actual figures themselves. Will they just be higher-res models of current P4 models, or will they use the system the guys doing "shrek" pioneered (ie. hidden muscles underneath the skin) that flex and bend naturally with IK so there's no more conflicts such as the shoulder disappearing halfway into the chest on some poses and... oh, heck you guys know what I mean...

Farmer08 ( ) posted Sat, 13 July 2002 at 3:57 AM

Wow, for me this is one of those maybe two programs to really buy a computer for (the other is Band-in-a-Box for making music). Won't need much else, except for the internet connections to rave about it. I start saving money right away. And thank you for a great job...

MikeArizma ( ) posted Sat, 13 July 2002 at 12:31 PM

This certainly looks like the program to wait for. As I always render in B5, but utilize Poser in every image --- to supply the actors, I hope the new way of doing things will still create objects that are just as compatible. My interest, of course, would be creating the characters with the new tools provided by Poser, then working them into my Bryce scenes. I hope the transmaps work as well with these more improved tools when turned on in Bryce. Can't wait for this one.

JoeBlack ( ) posted Sat, 13 July 2002 at 5:18 PM

Poser 5 looks amazing and all, but I have a small niggling thought in my mind that it'll require a gigantic pc with the latest video cards, at least 2gigs of ram, and a +2ghz processor :( Oh well, I can dream...goes back to Poser 4 Oh and PLEASE don't bombard me with how easy it is to make your own pc! I feel inadequate as it is, thnx ;p JoeBlack

mabfairyqueen ( ) posted Sat, 13 July 2002 at 5:53 PM

2gigs of Ram?!?! Nah, I'm sure it'll only require 1gig, LOL

Philywebrider ( ) posted Sat, 13 July 2002 at 6:15 PM

Will Poser 5 cause PC envy?

Farmer08 ( ) posted Sun, 14 July 2002 at 2:05 AM

I see a lot of people concerned about their videocard being fast enough, but far as I know your videocard has nothing to do with a render to DISK and that is what the real thing is all about. Here it is your main processor, the data throughput and the amount of )fast) memory that constitutes your work force. And so I would like to hear about the demands on that...

c1rcle ( ) posted Sun, 14 July 2002 at 2:15 AM

All those pc companies must be sitting back rubbing their collective hands with glee at the thought of the number of machines they're going to sell to those people who want Poser5. Rob

Dr Geep, Thanks! I keep telling myself to be patient (which is getting harder to do each day as you can guess from the contents of this thread!). Steve Cox should be a father by now, so he might be getting less sleep than Nosfiratu. We Mac users sometimes have to wait, but it is worth it. Not that many years ago, Mac users got the nifty software first and PC users were left with their noses pressed to the windows... and the pendulum may swing back again. Kupa, (and all of you from CuriousLabs), You know that you have a crew of people in the area and out of it who'll gladly help. Since it is less than a week until Siggraph, maybe the best we can do is not pester you with questions, but let you folks get ready to show whatever it is you intend to display. If the reaction here is any indication, you'll need drool collectors and tools to pop eyeballs back in their orbits as well as product literature. (If I was a cartoonist, I'd plop your booth onto the floor of a dungeon after a fight with the monsters: tongues down to knees, mouths foaming, eyestalks bulging... and those would be the heroes!) You won't need booth babes to draw in the crowd with screenshots like these. :) Carolly PS: don't expect to sleep on the plane to Texas. Please get a few hours first. {hugs}

I know im hardly the best poser user here, but DANG, I spent hard earned money and study time in poser 4 and now its all gone ? sniff oh what the heck, P5 will make it up to me.. if i can afford it before its P6 release time. Anyhoo, know that you have a lot of people on edge just waiting, lurking, stalking the stores and when someone places that p5 on an add, that store will be tipped over. Just my two cents... wait a minute, im gonna need those give em back!

hauksdottir ( ) posted Sat, 20 July 2002 at 5:48 AM

Zutgorak, Stalking? Nope. Standing patiently in line at midnight is more like it! California weather is warm enough we could have a midnight munchie party outside the store while waiting... singing silly songs, speculating, and smiling a whole lot. :) Carolly
