Hello I am currently attempting to put a chainmail shirt onto a character. I am hoping to give the piece some rougher edges on the sleeves and neck using a transperancy map, however (as you may be able to see) it appears some of the other textures still shine through somehow. Does anyone have any advice as to what I may do to help clean this up? Rawn

It looks as though you might have the highlights on. Set highlight to 0%

I see two problems. First, it looks like you havent completely covered the shirt template with the chainmail texture. Also your transmap may not be covering all the areas. Second, you need to set highlights to 1% and highlight color to pure black.

I agree, it looks like the transmap was done on the template and a few spots were missed. Make sure those are covered up with the pattern as well (on the transmap and also on your regular texture map if you're using one). Also, depending upon which character you're using (P4F, P4M, M/M2, V/V2, etc), there may be a catsuit or something similar already done up in various armor types in the free stuff. I'd poke around there if you're unable to figure it out. And a point of contention, the hightlight size can be more than 0% (or 1%) so long as the highlight color is pure black. :) You'll know when you have a highlight problem as you'll see a sort of ghost effect, like plastic wrap on the character instead of nothing/the appropriate clothing item you're using.

also, a standard approach to chainmail is to actually paint it onto the skin texture.

Thank you for all your advice. I seemed to be able to clean up the edges much better when I set the reflective colour to black, but then I lost all my reflection map properties. However as soon as I try another colour in the reflective colour area...my ghost sleeves show up. (I do understand that the "standard" approach to chain mail is to paint it on the skin textures, however I dont think that approach would suit this particular character as only a portion of the skin would be covered by the mail......unless there is a way to do this directly on the skin in this partial manour that I am as of yet unaware (being the newbie that I am )) Rawn

just paint over the skin texture where you want the chain mail to be

aye....but then when I put a reflection map on that, then the whole of the skin starts to shine....which is not an appealing look :) Rawn

Eh..if worse comes to worse, I guess i could paint those overhanging bits to look like he has a leather shirt or something beneath the armour. I think it would be a wise fasion sense, cuz the armour would do nasty things in tearing out chest hair :) But i would still like to find a way to do this "properly" Rawn

Rawn: If the base texture color where the transmap is happens to be black, then it does not have a highlight. Also, set the Reflection map properties to "Multiply through Object Color". This should allow you to keep your transmap AND your reflection map. ^_^
