Even the richest cities have their poor neighbourhoods. I guess this is one of them... Poser for the characters, plants from 3D caf textures from animax.it & the rest by me. 560 megs br-file (brrrr)

Oh my god.... I just started to work on my challenge entry this evening, but I already feel to stop it - your work is so awesome! Excellent modelling and detail - congratulations to such a great work! Take care, Jimi

Aldaron ( ) posted Sat, 13 July 2002 at 3:42 PM

Must say this is fantastic work, but then all your cityscapes are great!

Patricia ( ) posted Sat, 13 July 2002 at 9:25 PM

WOW......! I went to the Animax site you recommended and got some nice textures (been meaning to say 'thank you' ever since) but somehow when I use them they just don't have the impact that yours do....... pauses for a moment to allow the massiveness of that understatement to sink in I love your entry.

wow (I know, everyone else said wow) this is tight! only one suggestion everything seems alittle sharp, if that makes sense, kinda pulls away from the realism, other than that this is awesome work...

Erlik ( ) posted Sun, 14 July 2002 at 2:54 AM

I'll try to be original and not say "wow!" :-) Whoa! Really ... and I mean really ... wow. The only thing that bothers me is the water from the lion's mouth. I'd make the basin a little bigger, so the water doesn't fall so close to the edge.

You know...I think there are elements of Myst/Riven/Exile in the forground......Rochr...I think I hate you....I've just got my July Challenge pic Sky worked out and yet you've finished....This is simply a fantastic scene..It gets my vote before I 've seen the others. I'll just give up now and crawl under the bedclothes and sulk and trun off my pc and...................

ICMgraphics ( ) posted Sun, 14 July 2002 at 12:21 PM

MAN Where is the key that unlocks the door to look inside your brain? !!!!! I just voted for your entry over mine and mine isn't finished. Ugh! Absolutely beautiful work! And thank you for being such an inspiratioin. Rod

Hmmm...thanx a lot guys! Actually i wanted to have some more stuff in this pic (people, grass between some stones), but this is just about the limits of my pc... :( ...if you find the key, please let me know. Cant find the darn thing... :)

Amazing image. The idea of showing Atlantis focusing the attention to its neighbour is incredible!!! Lovely really lovely, but... I've already seen that environment in a pic with some lizards, don't you... ;)

electroglyph ( ) posted Sun, 14 July 2002 at 11:39 PM

Unbelevable! I just spent a day generating my characters. I made this really great muscle bound barbarian into a giant statue of posiedon. I was patting myself on the back when this comes along. It looks fantastic. I'm going to really have to pull out the stops now!

Rochr ( ) posted Mon, 15 July 2002 at 5:29 AM

Vasquez - Youre absolutely right! 4 of the houses to the left (the ones in the back) and those "pole-things" are from "Lifeforms". The rest is all new though, but i just thaught the enviroment from Lifeforms would suit perfectly for this.

You have the knack for creating great spaces and depth. It really looks big. Nice work! I see what itsrainin sees too, and I think that the shadows are causing it. If you have a spare week or two, how about a render with soft shadows?

Rochr ( ) posted Mon, 15 July 2002 at 11:15 AM

I was thinking of some DOF at first, set at 0,1-0,2. Not sure if soft shadows would render faster but i could try... Dont know how the machine would react though. If you hear a distant explosion, somewhere from the north, that was just me, making an attempt of premium rendering... :)

Not sure what kind of comp you have but maybe you could send the scene to someone with a more robust system for the render. Or even network with Bryce Lightning. I have a 900 Mhz AMD with 384 MB RAM

Rochr ( ) posted Mon, 15 July 2002 at 1:00 PM

I have a new pc in parts. Just havent had the time to put it together. My vacation started today though... :) The system im using now, is a 1 Ghz Athlon with 512 MB RAM. The new one is a 2.26 Ghz P4, with 512 MB RDRAM. (Have ordered another 512 megs, which should arrive sometime this week...i hope!) Should do the trick when it comes to rendering... But its not the CPU thats the problem. Its my graphic card. When it takes about 10-15 minutes just to select an object, and then another 4-5 minutes to rotate the thing 90 degrees, its just not fun to work with a piece. Since postwork wasnt allowed... But its not very often i do something with this many objects. My usual br-files are around 150-250 megs.

I won't say "wow", so: HOLY MACKEREL!!! Damn fine scene you built there. Mes compliments au chef!

Aldaron ( ) posted Mon, 15 July 2002 at 7:16 PM

Well I only have a Geforce 2mx so I'm probably in as bad a shape. Maybe next tax season I'll upgrade CPU and add more memory. :) Oh and a new vid card too.

cshaftoe ( ) posted Mon, 15 July 2002 at 8:21 PM

Rochr: Are those 'pole things' power-cables and support poles? Do these guys have electricity? Then the basket objects dangling from the poles are street-lights???

Rochr ( ) posted Tue, 16 July 2002 at 1:25 AM

They could be... :) Scientists claim that advanced civilizations have existed before. Who knows how advanced...

Very well done. This is a good use of animax, glad to see it finally showing up, wonderful program.

shadowdragonlord ( ) posted Thu, 18 July 2002 at 5:08 PM

Aye, Rochr I'm using a similar machine, (AMD 1GHz) and it uses a Geforce 4 MX 420 with 64 MB DDR, and I'll tell you that it makes almost no difference as far as selection and manipulation of the wireframe mess... My older Pentium 3 uses a Riva TNT 16MB (PCI) and it easily keeps up in terms of layout speed. I don't think NVidia has any solutions yet for 2D acceleration, the GeForce is for games, period. Funny that they can accelerate Unreal up to 190 FPS but Bryce is still kicking at 1 frame in five hours! (laughs at self, maniacally almost!)

Rochr ( ) posted Thu, 18 July 2002 at 5:37 PM

I agree. GeForce sucks when it comes to CG. I currently use a GeForce 2 Titanium with 128 megs of DDR. Its apparently not enough... Dont know about the "new" Ti4600 though... Well, i know what tops my wishlist, and its not a GeForce. :)
