Subject: what do you think about Digital Carvers plugins

martial ( ) posted Sun, 14 July 2002 at 12:03 PM · edited Fri, 02 August 2024 at 7:49 PM

I have Carrara 2.0.With Carrara 1 ,i have tried the plugs demo but find it too complicated and delete it.This weekend,i dloaded again Anything grooves and anything grows demo.I print the tutors from Digital carvers.

Anything grooves:i know what is displacement mapping and use different 3D soft for many years .But i am still confuse about using this plugin,i have so so result with the tutorial(better with the two ones in Anything Grooves Resources).Still find it is complicated.Maybe it is me:english is not my natural language and perhaps i miss something in reading tutorial text

Anythinggrows: after the difficuties with Anythinggrooves,i did not install the demo.I have bought Furrific before with Raydream and it seems to be look like it.

I have downloaded the demos with the intention to buy it
But now i hesitate.May be it is me(a really dummy day ) .What the others users think about these plugings? Thanks

I've used many of the plugins from DCG and I think they are totally fabulous. Like many things in Carrara, they take a little practice and experimentation to understand and utilize but it's well well worth it. I think DCG has added components to C which I consider much more than niceties. I would say they're rather critical for a 3D package. -Kix

I use them all. They are excellent additions and well supported by their creator, Eric Winemiller. I don't know if this would help but you can try pasting some of the language from the tutorials at the link provided.

I also find the plug-ins essential. And I guess so does Eovia, since they opted to include Anything Glows into the software! Highs praise Eric! I have also been impressed with his tutorials, and the quick support he gives. (Especially through this forum!) The only problem I find is when some of the settings are set to high (like anything grows for lawns,) it starts to bring my computer to its knees with the polygon count. Sssslllloooowwww interface response. But the final renders are worth it! I don't "enable" until it's render time, but still, it gets hard when doing test renders to turn things on and off.

Were there any changes to the Toon renderer for Carrara 2?

bluetone, If you haven't upgraded to C2, it solves a lot of the slow interface response problems C1.x had with large polygon objects. It's dramatically faster in handling high density Grooves or Grows objects. Eric Winemiller Digital Carvers Guild Freeware and commercial 3D extensions http://digitalcarversguild.com

jkm, It doesn't look like there were any changes for the C2 version for Toon!. That code is maintained by eovia now so I can be sure, but everything looks the same and appears to be behaving the same. Eric, Thanks for the info. Toon was one of the main reasons I picked up C1 back in January. I'd really love to have that functionality in Poser. I might have been able to justify upgrading to C2 if there were major enhancements to Toon. Since it doesn't sound like there are, I guess I'll starting saving my pennies for Poser 5 when it becomes available.

I just got Anything Grooves and Anything Grows. Although I would not call them intuitive to use (it seems very little is in 3d software), after going through the tutorials, I was able to get good results. Unfortunately, since Carrara is made up of many different plug-ins, there often is not consistency in how things work. You may need to adjust your mindset a bit and not try to use these plugins as you might other parts of Carrara. So far these seem to work as advertised and work well. BJ
