Subject: What the H*** is with the Downloads??

beelzebulb ( ) posted Thu, 02 March 2000 at 7:12 AM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 1:37 PM

I do everything it says when I want to download off of the Yahoo/Geocities mess but I haven't been able to download a file from there for a long time. I have tried both IE 5 and NetScape4 and niether works. The Yahoo ones are the only ones I have trouble with. What gives? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I know the directions don't seem to work. geocities has been canceling some people who have heavy download activity( I guess they want people to go there to download and not do the remote download thing) Anyway the last time I downloaded from them when I get to that window that says nodownload(whatever) I highlight the address bar and then press enter( sometimes a couple of times not a quick press a slow deliberate press

I know my Geocities site was dumped and I only had one file linked to the FS. I'm sure anyone who linked to Geocities has been dropped. -JH.

I haven't been but I pulled my downloads off( I only had a couple) when I heard about Allie. I now use my @home web page for my downloads and Geocities for my gallery. It was a pain. Marge

I got dropped and I didn't even have a site there (not one file even) :) -Trav

Well, I guess that's solved one problem for me - I ain't going to be using Geocities for my web-site. Anybody got any suggestions where else I might try? Paul

I'd suggest crosswinds.net. They've removed their space limitations & their banner requirements. So basically they offer unlimited space. I've sent a number of people there, as well as helped a few people set up their own sites & haven't had a problem yet.

I haven't had any problem with geocities, and I have a very large site there with some material that might or might not be considered objectionable. I don't offer downloads though.

The downloads seem to be the key to getting kicked out of Geocities. I also have a couple nudes but they haven't kicked me out yet.(knock on wood) Marge

Yeah, I had some trouble on my 50megs site when I loaded an image that I wanted to submit to a magazine. It wasn't linked to anything on any of the pages, so 50megs wouldn't let the editor access the image. When I linked it to a page, there was no problem. Maybe that's what needs to be done at geocities, is to have the downloads link to a page.

Uh, oh, Bonestructure. I just tried to access your page and Geocities said it wasn't available any longer. I accessed it from the members page with your favorite link--assuming it was your web page. Diane B

Nah, it's available. I might have put the wrong addy on the members stuff. the disease I have affects my memory. It's http://www.geocities.com/Soho/Loft/3712

Looks like geo was having some problems this morning. No big surprise, since yahoo took it over. Actually, they wouldn't dare take my site down. I'm one of their best advertisements. Everyone says there are no good sites on geocities, but my little horror magazine is very popular for an online zine, is in the geocities top 100, and was even invited to submit to the Webby Awards, at no charge. I'm rather proud of it actually.

You should be that is quite an accomplishment. And a book with Piers Anthony. You should toot your horn. That is all excellent news. Marge

Bonestructure; Whats your addy on 50 megs? Thats my sites host also. I get the no banners setup and I like the way the new owners are setting it up. They are really spending the money and the 18 meg bandwidth is great eh? Check out my site at http://beelzebulb.50megs.com

bonestructure ( ) posted Wed, 08 March 2000 at 9:37 AM

My addy there is http://users2.50megs.com/bone

I tricked the download to get the one I wanted. I followed the instructions for getting the file, and nothing worked. Finally, I copied and pasted the URL into my main address window and hit enter. That did it. I finally downloaded the file. I'm on GeoCities, too, but I've never tried to link anything here. I did a few times back when I was visiting PFO, but never had any problems. Since I've moved over here, I haven't tried linking or uploading anything, so I still have my site. Instead, I put anything I offer (mostly texures) on my GeoCities site, then just reference it in here and give the URL so people can just go there to visit and get it. So far, no problems. GeoCities has gotten really flaky since Yahoo took over. I think that was a bad move on GeoCities. Melanie
