Subject: Tower Construction Kit - first pics & question

Hi, some days ago I told you that I will do a tower construction kit as a freebie. The first parts are now done, and yet many more will follow. With this construction kit, everybody can quickly build zillions of different towers, houses and castles. Because that YOU will be the user - who hopefully will like it ;-) - YOUR suggestions are needed: what do you want else? More roofs - more floors? More windows - less railings? Simply tell me, and I will include what you want and need into the Kit. Take care, Jimi

derjimi your Tower Construction Kit looks really COOL!!! And this is just the begining of the kit WOW!!!

StarGate ( ) posted Sun, 28 July 2002 at 2:15 PM

ok comments - ok derjimi you set up each part of the kit then get a recking ball and kock holes in the walls and roofs - that way we can also build towers in ruins. LOL just kidding derjimi Your doing such a good job I don't know what to add.

Sterenn ( ) posted Sun, 28 July 2002 at 2:32 PM

Sure we want more. It's so nice. Some spare pillars and staircases in the kit to fit inside the rooms. Great idea and beautiful work.

derjimi ( ) posted Sun, 28 July 2002 at 2:46 PM

Some suggestions came from the Poser forum and here (quoted) my answers: Great suggestions! THANK YOU. :) - onion shaped top: will be hard to do for me, but I'll try - archway: yeah! - Textures: nope, sorry. There will probably one high wuality brick texture, the rest is up to you - Skybridges sound cool! Will do that. - Some basic ground walls are also good - some simple and some with openings for archers and so - ruins will be difficult, too. My modelling abilities are still low, I started only weeks ago. Will check if it is possible - Battlement railing: of course. :) - Extendet balkony: was done yet, will do some more. :) - Exterior-mounted platform with winches: yeah, cool. So, this will take some time! I'm looking forward to model your suggestions. :) Take care, Jimi

derjimi ( ) posted Sun, 28 July 2002 at 3:26 PM

By the way: everything can be scaled and keeps fitting. So you are able to create inner and outer railings et cetera. :)

Patricia ( ) posted Sun, 28 July 2002 at 6:17 PM

Wow! Complete this and you will be a Towering Figure in our little community...... ; ) (Sorry--couldn't resist. It's a great freebie, thank you!)

ChuckEvans ( ) posted Sun, 28 July 2002 at 8:29 PM

Gee, it looks really nice! Some archways and connecting bridges/crossovers would really lend well to building clusters. Few weeks, huh? Now I feel more inadequate than I usually do...grin.

Lookin good, jimi ! A friend just gave me a mag on moden log cabins and some pointers on texturing. He's been working on leather for 20 years and I found a lot of it useful. If I think of anything I'll let you know.

EricofSD ( ) posted Mon, 29 July 2002 at 1:23 AM

Great idea.

Renderbrant ( ) posted Tue, 30 July 2002 at 4:16 PM

derjimi, very nice work. I found an easy way to do ruins, heres how, make a cylinder and make it positive. Create a terrain above the cylinder and turn upside 180, make it negative. Position the cylinder where you want it to cut away, group them both and render- YAY! :) Hope this helps.

bikermouse ( ) posted Tue, 30 July 2002 at 4:29 PM

Someone had a tutorial on broken glass that might work for ruins too. I think it was BryceTech. - TJ

derjimi ( ) posted Tue, 30 July 2002 at 5:12 PM

Yeah, broken glass made out of booleans. It is possible to import the tower, set the attributes of each single part to "positive", take a huge rock or terrain and set it "negative" and group them. Works pretty good. :) --- Today I modelled some sidetowers which can be applied on the outer walls. And every other roof or floor part can be applied to the sidetowers - everything is compatible, it only must be scaled down because the sidetowers are smaller. :) J.

Here you can see - two of the sitetower props - one platform on the right where several items can be put on like floors and a roof - the left sidetower has planes to be textured as glass - and you can see that the same roof (blue one) is used on both parts - the main tower and the side tower. As I said - everything is compatible. I just scaled the roof down to use it as sidetower roof. Hope you like it. :) Modelling is going on, it will take probably two or three more weeks to put all in the Freestuff here. J.

-=derjimi=- What a FANTASTIC idea and work you are doing. I think it is great that you are gonna make this a freebie.... Interchangeable... scaleable... Very cool idea. Very generous gesture to the community as well. As for other additions.... a bell tower? can't really think of anything else that you haven't mentioned. It sounds like it is something that you are enjoying doing. Thanks a lot for your extra efforts on this project. It is very much appreciated!!!!

derjimi ( ) posted Tue, 30 July 2002 at 6:08 PM

A bell tower is already on my list. :-) Have you something special in mind or can you probably show me a picture how this bell tower should look like? J.

derjimi ( ) posted Tue, 30 July 2002 at 6:10 PM

Oh... and by the way: if I wouldn't enjoy it it would be work and I'd take money for it... ;-))) But it's plain fun! :-)

bikermouse ( ) posted Tue, 30 July 2002 at 6:17 PM

jimi, A bell tower - can Gothic Architecture and Quasi Moto be far behind. I'm still looking and a thinkin' on it. Did someone mention fireplaces? - TJ (bikermouse)

Great idea. It looks fantastic! What about parapet walls?

derjimi ( ) posted Thu, 01 August 2002 at 12:38 PM

Sorry - what are parapet walls? Sometimes my english isn't very good... J.

Allen9 ( ) posted Fri, 02 August 2002 at 4:41 PM

Der_jimi, these are great. I just downloaded the first installment and I'm really looking forward to the rest. As for the onion-shaped dome, it's not as hard as it might seem, I've done some similar shapes in DCad and I've seen some neat ones in Gunther Berkus "fantasy architecture" freebies - maybe you could talk to him and make a deal. Anyway, there's a lot of us out here really looking forward to all the parts of this great kit. Thanks for building this for everyone.

Allen9 ( ) posted Fri, 02 August 2002 at 4:49 PM

Bikermouse - That's "Quasimodo" - there's a pun in the name too. Though the story is set in France, in Italian "quasi-modo" means "semi-fashionable". (That's the same 'modo' that came to us in the French-derived phrase "pie la mode" [literally meaning pie "in the fashion."]) I think it's a hoot to look at ol' Quas and think "semi-fashionable, oooooooo."

ChuckEvans ( ) posted Fri, 02 August 2002 at 4:57 PM

Downloaded the first installment? Did I miss something on this great freebie?

derjimi ( ) posted Fri, 02 August 2002 at 5:27 PM

Well, there's a small tower in the freestuff since some days. But that tower is nothing compared to the kit I'm working on. ;-)

Allen, There was a pun. Sorry you missed it - although yours are interesting too. See the attached link and read the names of the bikermice. - TJ

oops I reread what I said - I meant Modo not Moto in the post allen is refering to. No wonder allen didn't get it. sorry about that.(bikermouse goes off to stand in the corner with the pointy hat and gets mistaken for a wizard by that guy on the other side of the mirror. sigh) - TJ
