Subject: No OBJ import for P5?

Jcleaver ( ) posted Tue, 06 August 2002 at 6:41 AM · edited Sun, 19 January 2025 at 9:01 AM

I noticed that .OBJ was not in the list of supported formats for import. It was there for exports. Is this correct?

x2000 ( ) posted Tue, 06 August 2002 at 7:04 AM

That MUST be a mistake!

SAMS3D ( ) posted Tue, 06 August 2002 at 7:37 AM

It is there, just saw it: Import AVI, PCT, PNG, BMP, JPG, WAV, BVH motion, Lightwave 5, 3DS, DXF, 3DMF Export AVI, Flash-SWF, PCT, PNG, BMP, JPG, BVH motion, Viewpoint Experienced Technology (VET), OBJ, Lightwave 5, 3DS, DXF, 3DMF, RIB Sharen

SAMS3D ( ) posted Tue, 06 August 2002 at 7:37 AM

Isn't WAV an OBJ?

audity ( ) posted Tue, 06 August 2002 at 7:50 AM

Hi Sharen, WAV are not (Wavefront) OBJ. It's a PCM audio format. :) Eric

stewer ( ) posted Tue, 06 August 2002 at 7:56 AM

Must be a mistake, Poser 5 can of course import .obj.

SAMS3D ( ) posted Tue, 06 August 2002 at 7:56 AM

hmmmm, so does this mean no object import format available...Sharen

SAMS3D ( ) posted Tue, 06 August 2002 at 8:00 AM

Thanks Legume, I knew that they couldn't or wouldn't forget that, but why don't they state it? Maybe it is a given....Sharen PS: pitchfork safely stored away

dan whiteside ( ) posted Tue, 06 August 2002 at 8:08 AM

But what does P5 export to .OBJ? Hair? Cloth? Displacement mapping? "Curious" minds want to know :-)

SAMS3D ( ) posted Tue, 06 August 2002 at 8:26 AM

Export AVI, Flash-SWF, PCT, PNG, BMP, JPG, BVH motion, Viewpoint Experienced Technology (VET), OBJ, Lightwave 5, 3DS, DXF, 3DMF, RIB

SAMS3D ( ) posted Tue, 06 August 2002 at 8:27 AM

Import AVI, PCT, PNG, BMP, JPG, WAV, BVH motion, Lightwave 5, 3DS, DXF, 3DMF

SAMS3D ( ) posted Tue, 06 August 2002 at 9:13 AM

I know, well get out of the kitchen if you can't stand the heat.....LOL, but Legume you are correct, that's what happens when you create a great product, I for one am quite anxious. Sharen PS: I wonder when the end of summer really means though

This has GOT to be a mistake... to shut out all use of the models, free and other wise, created in obj format from being imported into 5?? What are they thinking if this is not a typo? HELLO STEVE COOPER!?? Of course models can always be converted to another format before importing, but that may change too much...so may be a waste.. and of course models can still be 'phi-ed' into geometries, one would IMAGINE... unless 5 is just too different?? But not to be able to use the import of obj ability.. Why LIMIT 5's use?? I am sure most of us will be keeping our Poser 4 to retain full use of all our libraries and proper functions! Perhaps 5 will just be a "specialized poser" for specific uses, while 4 is the real mainstay!? Lyne

Yeah, the omission of OBJ Import is a mistake. OBJs are supoported in both directions in Poser 5. I'll flog the product manager. ;-) Kupa

Duddly ( ) posted Tue, 06 August 2002 at 10:01 AM

I am sure everyone is worrying over nothing. As all of the existing geometries are in obj format, including ol' posette and dork, and Poser 5 will have to read them to be backwards compatible they will be able to import obj. Now if I could just get Maya importing....

Dave-So ( ) posted Tue, 06 August 2002 at 10:13 AM

Thanks for the clarification on OBJ...I was about to force a cow.... As far as excited, like I said on the Yahoo Poser list...I'm ALMOST as excited as my first sexual experience...almost..

zstrike ( ) posted Tue, 06 August 2002 at 10:44 AM

There would be no compatibility issues with Metacreations own existing geometries if they are provided as native OBJ's. So that would not be a consideration to them.

There is only one reason not to allow the importation of secondary OBJ's. That is to force everyone to create their OBJ's for Poser 5 as native. Why do this? Greed thats why. If you want to control the secondary market of prop and character reselling, this is how you would do it. By forcing everyone to make their products native to Poser 5 they can then require a licensing fee for every product. They see how huge that market is and they want a piece of that pie. There is no question in my mind that this is an intentional omission, and there is no other reason for it.

But its stupid because it is this huge secondary market support that props up their software despite its limitations. If they cut out or limit that support they only will sow the seeds of their own downfall. People will simply continue to use the existing version. I am not advocating it, but simply stating the obvious when I say that it would only encourage and expand the underground market for pirating the older versions of Poser.

I think the Poser community should demand that Metacreations go on public record that this is not their intention and will not require licensing fees on secondary market products. If they don't then there is no question in my mind that is their intention and I for one will not upgrade ever.

zstrike, you just bored me to sleep...... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..........

c1rcle ( ) posted Tue, 06 August 2002 at 11:24 AM

zstrike Metacreations doesn't exist anymore, we're dealing with Curious Labs now, & Steve Cooper the big whip cracker over there has just said it was a typo that left obj import off the site that's all, stop panicking ok :)

markdc ( ) posted Tue, 06 August 2002 at 12:20 PM

zstrike, you should read the entire thread before you post.

gstorme ( ) posted Tue, 06 August 2002 at 1:54 PM

Thanks for the clarification, Kupa!
zstrike, CL is not Microsoft.
I kind of had expected the omission of obj a typo. It probably would have broken backward compatibility of the product.

leather-guy ( ) posted Tue, 06 August 2002 at 9:32 PM

I don't want to start ANOTHER Poser5 thread just for this, But hopefully I'll get an answer - Any prospect of import/export for OBP format? - Don't know What the technical differences are, but there're a couple of buildings in OBP format I'd like to use in Poser, like gigahedron's Koenigshalle in the MP.

Lyne ( ) posted Tue, 06 August 2002 at 9:51 PM

ZStrike, I didn't catch "Kupa's" reply either.. being I was looking for Steve's name... regardless, it is good that he will have the person responsible 'flogged' for causing all of us, who are dedicated to Poser (EVEN SINCE Metacreations! :) to be eagerly reading EVERY WORD of the announcments... and reacting !
