Besides, my system's a better test--more typical of the average user: a 466 G4 with 640(?) megs of RAM, running OS 9.2; soon to be upgraded to X.1.whatever.

after all OsX is based on bsd isn'it ?

hogwarden ( ) posted Tue, 06 August 2002 at 3:53 PM

Jaqui. Love and hugs. (Consiliatory)(?) If only the whole world were Linux. What a relief to developers that would be!!! H:)

Jaqui ( ) posted Tue, 06 August 2002 at 5:28 PM

Hogwarden, specially as Stormrage has watched her winblows machine slow down when opening 3rd or 4th application, and my linux box can have 30 applications running without getting bogged down. (linux is actually better than os9 for memory management, though osx should be as good.) though developers might not like having to port thier crashware app to linux, they would love the speed it gains and the reliability it gains.

Actually, BSD based or Linux based (I've heard them both) once the OS X version is up and running it should be a relatively trivial matter to toss out Unix and Linux versions should CL be so inclined. (Part of me hopes they are. :) ) And those of us in the Linux community should get used to the fact that quality software does cost some coinage. As wonderful as The GIMP is, it ain't Photoshop. :-) For now I'll keep an XP partition to run Poser 5 in, but only cause I'm drooling helplessly waiting for it to come out. (And Dave So thinks he's the only excited one. :) )

well, I personally don't want to wait for commercial apps to be ported to unix / linux, so I'm coding my own suite of graphics apps. ( including a 3d modelling / rendering application, hopefully be able to have it work a lot like poser) and other than plugins for commercial app compatability, it will always be open source. ~G~ (can't give away CL's intellectual property, have to pay them for being able to make use in own app so have to sell plugin pre-compiled )
