Subject: Poser 4 is dead. Long live Poser 4!

hogwarden ( ) posted Wed, 07 August 2002 at 6:10 PM · edited Mon, 20 January 2025 at 10:56 AM

As you all know, over the next year or so there is about to ne a huge glut of newbie Poser 4 users due to the cheap upgrades and possible Magazine promotions... not to mention those hard-core-but-financially-challenged Poser 4 users who won't be upgrading for a while. To this end... I urge you all to relax! Poser 4 products and freebies won't vanish overnight... in fact, with the influx of new blood, we may well find the community growing and growing. I, for one, am carrying on with the development of my products for Poser 4 regardless... including something new which opens up your Poser 4 runtime libraries in a serious way.(!) We will have two rather different products supported at once in these forums, and it would be terrible to see a horrid split within the Poser community. To those who upgrade first... Don't forget your roots!!!!! JM2CW... H:)

lol, I used Poser 3 for a while, while everyone was in Poser 4 mode. I'll make my products both P5, P4, and PPP compatible, and my business partner and I will have some AWESOME products soon, two are almost ready . . . ben

Rest assured, I'll keep P4 compatibility in mind when making new freebies, although any dynamic cloth items will be P5-exclusive.

hogwarden ( ) posted Wed, 07 August 2002 at 6:43 PM

Nice... hopefully it will become ccommon policy among free-stuff and marketplace items to support Poser 4, 5 and Propack where possible. Of course the new character, cloth and hair possibilities will lead to many P5-only items...

darkphoenix ( ) posted Wed, 07 August 2002 at 6:55 PM

i think a poser5 tag should be added to the pc/mac tags when it comes out myself. soon we'll be seeing flame wars rise up again with the 3d apps vs. poser 5 and p5 vs p4 threads :(

hogwarden ( ) posted Wed, 07 August 2002 at 7:09 PM

I can forsee many Poser 4 users having to manually edit-out the Poser 5 "extra sections" from within market-place files to make Poser 4 accept them... It'd be nice if this wasn't necessary if at all possible! Will Poser 4 users have to do this Kupa? And then there's the obvious added expense of items containing Poser 5 content... the value of such items wiil be greater, but Poser 4 users will only be able to use bits of the items...

It seems to me that p4 and p5 are at two different levels. I don't know if I am read to make the leap to p5. The price tag is one thing, but the other is that fact that I like p4. I like all the weirdness with it, and I like that fact that the thing runs on my wimpy piii 500. P5 is a mighty powerfull, tool, but I don't know if a hobbiest like me can really justify the expense (again).

Thanks Hogwarden for that posts. I must say i have been a bit worried about it. I got Poser4 half a year ago and i am not even close to mastering it, purchasing Poser5 will not be an option for me (/me waves at bankaccount _o/). Tips here on the forum have been immensly valuable, hopefully that doesnt end at the arrival of Poser5. (Though i cant wait untill you poser-gurus start posting P5 art :-) ) Take Care! Zigster

It`s time to create a new censorship criterion for pictures . For all those who can not bear the sight of P5 artwork wich will be reason for sleepless nights, agony and depressions. ..nudity / violence / p5artwork ..... ;O))))) Greetings, webvogel

Poser4 freebies will not die out for a couple of very good reasons, the newbies who may get poser4 free from magazines & mainly because we'll still be able to use the freebies with poser5. It would be sensible for freebie makers who move to poser5 to keep a copy of poser4 loaded to test compatablity. Rob

thip ( ) posted Thu, 08 August 2002 at 4:10 AM

Planning to do just that, c1rcle - P4 users will probably be a majority for quite a while yet. And since Kupa has repeatedly stated that P5 is backwards-compatible with P4, any investment (modeler time AND user time) in P4 should be worth its while even AFTER P4 has become a fond memory ;o)

macmullin ( ) posted Thu, 08 August 2002 at 4:58 AM

I can see a lot of items that are presently in the stores becoming freebees very quickly in the future such as trans-hair and morph targets. I personally think the demand will be in the construction of dyaramas (high end stage sets) photo textures and theme oriented props and costumes.

thip ( ) posted Thu, 08 August 2002 at 5:45 AM

Beg to differ, mac (and no, I don't do trans hair or morphs). Anyone who wants to render in apps other than Poser will still need P4 stuff, unless, say, Vue and P5 becomes one fully integrated app - or unless we get plug-ins to add P5 dynamic hair, putty etc. to other apps. Damn, I hate all this speculation CL forces on us. Too bad Kupa seems to be such a nice guy, it'd be much easier to hate him if he wasn't ;o)

c1rcle ( ) posted Thu, 08 August 2002 at 6:00 AM

I agree with thip just because poser5 is coming is no reason for the sellers to make their stuff into freebies, p4 will possibly be a freebie on magazine disks before long so there's a whole new generation of customers just waiting to start buying poser4 goodies. Plus steve said some transmapped hair would be shipped with p5, check out my thread about hair styles. Rob
