How do I make a realistic looking explosion?

I'm not sure this is realistic enough, if it is and I'll let you know how it was done.

It is.

I did this in metasequoia. It probably can be done in many modelling programs. Open a primative torus, increase size til it looks like a bagel, then extrude with bevel applied just extrude slightly or you get a real explosion spikes everywhere and it takes forever to render. you'll get it I did it by accident then went back to find out what I did. then just export back to bryce to color and render. have fun

If ou are going to makle it in bryce you need many sperical layers of volumetric materials-some smoke and some fire-as well as a lens flare and some solid shrapnel (simple rocks with a light 3d disperse/rotate)

You can always do it in post. You might be able to find some stock explosion pics on the web and then comp it into your pic. There's also an app called Wondertouch (formerly known as Illusion) that does pretty convincing explosions. (see link) It's pricey, but you can d/l the demo and play around with that. Steve S.

You could try this post. I'll have to get it on my website one of these days.
