Subject: File Hosting Conglomeration? (Confederation?)

heyas; well, i was thinking.... a lot of people are getting kicked out of their free web space for hosting files. renderosity doesnt host free stuff files, because there are just too many. props guild (last i recall) and poserworld host files at their sites. so.... i dunno, would there be a way for those sites to work together with the free stuff section, like... can the free stuff section be partly hosted with another server? i mean, if those sites, or others like them, are interested in that? but it could still have the current linking for people who have their own server space where they want to keep their files? is this making any sense? it sounded a little more than half-baked when i was thinking of it. ;)

Bloodsong, Right now, we are in discussion with BECamation.com about purchasing some servers so that we can start hosting more of our forums, increase space and even lease space out to members pretty damn cheap. Once things are finalized I will let everyone know :o) Jack

Or why not just use the space provided by other sites. Fr'intstance. The 3DCC, Props Guild, and Poserworld have many of the files listed in the funstuff. So why not we just link from those site's files and then the files are available from both Renderosity and the other sites. Besides, why should there be two copies of the same file available?

problem with that nick is, when you set up a file at say, 3DCC and then link it here, 3DCC is paying for the bandwith used here. Not nice. It's like running a water hose off your neighbor's house. and it's not really multiple files. Simply multiple links. :) ed

Ahhh.... Duh! But then again, couldn't we all just pool our space and offer it to members. Y'know, 3DCC for Comic related things, Props Guild for props and the like, Poser World for fashions then have like a link to the respective sites, might be a bit more of a hassle, but it would bring people to the other sites as well. But then you have bandwidth fees. Although are there sites that offer unltd bandwidth? Where it wouldn't be that big a deal if thousands of people went there? Just a thought!

heya; also, poserworld and props guild bring people to their pages to view ads, which pay for the sites, so.... if you were to link directly to a file on there, you'd get the same 'remote linking and not seeing ads' deal and make people grumpy. :) thats a cool idea to try to get enough server space and bandwidth here to host files again. though im not sure it makes sense to ask people to pay even a nominal fee to host free downloads... :) what we really need is a co-operative files database, so you can search for stuff not just on this site, but in the other major download areas as well.
