Subject: Mimic & P5

Hi Guys. Maybe this is impossible to answer, since no one's actually seen P5 yet, but here goes. I'm very tempted by Daz's MASSIVE reduction on the Mimic program, but I'd feel really silly if I bought it this month, then found that P5 arrived next month and that Mimic was imcompatible with it. So I just thought I'd ask if anyone here has Mimic experience or knows how it works - and whether it's still likely to work with P5. Daz's reduction is SO good that it got my 'no such thing as a free lunch' nerve twitching!!! Morph

Heh, cross-post. Your last line applies to me, too. Hope we get some good answers.

No inside info on this - but I think Steve Cooper would not have posted to this thread if Mimic pose files weren't going to be compatible with Poser 5. The deal is even better when you consider that you get a $10 voucher for DAZ-created products. Most Mimic animations need fine-tuning, but they're a terrific time-saver. Some figures don't have the right internal names on the morphs for all the settings to be applied, but you can edit the .cr2 files in a text editor to make them Mimic-compatible. Elisa, could you please address some of the questions I posted 2 messages up from here? Thanks.

Thought I heard once that mimic, or mimic like function would be part of P5.

My thought was that Daz intends on being in this business for awhile. That would be a nasty trick and would have the whole community annoyed at them. So I bought it last night.

You won't regret getting mimic - great product. I'm archiving your comment about "nasty trick" - hope I never have to unzip it and e-mail it to you...

Mimic is a brilliant program, well worth the money, but "buyer beware." Mimic works great out of the box with the P4 figures -- but it needs considerable tweaking with the Millennium figures. I personally think that it stinks with the Millennium figures, which is ironic, since Daz now owns it. Dan Farr of Daz finally admitted in a recent thread that Mike and Vicky are only "reasonably compatible" with Mimic. See the attached link. It doesn't mean you shouldn't buy it. But it does mean that you need to have this information first to make your decision.

Thanks for the info re Mimic and Mill figures. Since I never use P4 figures anymore, it all sounds like it might be more hassle than it's worth. I'll keep saving my pennies until I've got my greedy little paws on P5, then think about other purchases! Morph

You can fix a specific Mimic pose file by opening it in a text editor like Notepad or BBEditLight and changing any morph names that are different on a particular figure. An easier way is to fix the figures by taking a single morph that's misnamed, set its value to 1, and spawn a new morph target. You will end up with an extra dial, that has the right internal name and will take the setting from a Mimic pose. If you just rename the dial, you don't correct the internal name. If you change the internal names or delete the original morph dial after spawning the new one, any other pose files that use the original names will no longer work. (BTW, my Xpression products can be used with Mimic. Of course, if you check the boxes in Mimic for adding eye and brow movements, the poses will affect the eye expressions.) If anyone is interested, I'll put together a list of non-Mimic-conforming internal morph names for Vic, Mike, Steph and the kids, and post it. Now that DAZ owns Mimic, we can expect that not only will any Mimic upgrade better support its figures, but that new versions of Millennium figures will have speech morphs optimized for its use. This is a great development! Elisa/gryffnn

Gryffnn, I would very much be interested in your list of non-Mimic-conforming internal morph names for Vic, Mike, Steph and the kids. Thanks in advance. jjsemp

Hello,

In response to questions posted here concerning Mimic, Poser 5, and the Millennium Figures, we wanted to let everyone know that there is information on DAZ's website in our FAQ section, under "Other". There are sample AVI's linked there as well.

Thanks again for your support! The more we see good support like this for specials, the more we will keep doing them. In fact, if customer response keeps up enough, we might have another "Mystery" surprise for you all very, very soon...
