Peej, I would go for Carrara if I were you. I have really enjoyed the new interface. RDS was a little cumbersom. Carrara "Flows" really well. Go for the upgrade from RDS to Carrara. Carrara has more features than RDS does. Clint

This question is a slightly different slant on Carrara vs RDS. I am a newbie to 3D. I was inspired by net galleries to take it up on a hobby basis. I have Poser 4, Bryce 4, and RDS 5.5. I find the Bryce and Poser interfaces very intuitive. I love working with them. They are fun, though not without tough spots here and there. RDS is dufferent. I am having trouble learning the RDS interface. I see on the MC site that Carrara's interface is much like Bryce and Poser. I am thinking that I should get Carrara because of the similarity of the interface. I haven't been working (or trying to work) with RDS very long, so I don't have much time invested in wrestling with the interface. I am not looking (necessarily) for instant gratification. I realize that it will take weeks or months of solid effort to come up with something worth showing to this forum (or to anybody, for that matter). But RDS is giving me fits, and I am thinking that Carrara might be the way to go. So, for a newbie, Carrara or RDS?
