Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 11 8:37 pm)
EEeekkk.. I just read further on the thread about the Beard set.. and no way am I (not being that computer literate) am I going to buy that set or others with this installer thing! I thought it was a piracy protection thing, but the last post says it's because the files are SO large ? (that is what a zip is for??) It's all way too confusing to me, and really strange to have installers put themselves inside poser where you have to dig them up and run them... are you Sure it is not a piracy thing!? I understand why this would be needed.. but gee whiz... give us back our old single action installers, please!!?? Sara
Just to calm your fears everyone. The additional files we're using are both for piracy-protection as well as their size. All together the three files add to over 30 Meg's of data. While we do already sell several products that are 30 MB's or more, we often get complaints from customers about the download size of products. To try to ease this, we decided to try this new procedure. Just like c1rcle said, the additional files simply ask you to locate the core obj file for the beard to verify your purchase. The program will then ask you where to save the embedded installer, after saving this new installer you must then run that new installer. We apologize if this has proven slightly confusing for some of our users. If you, sparkel, or anyone else, does have any trouble with these additional installer files, please simply contact our sales department (sales@daz3d.com) and after you give us your order/invoice number we can then send you just the simple map installers for you to run just like "normal". Thanks for your patience. Steve
Oh, and just one more thing. This was a bit of an experiment. We're trying to do what we can to ease the download problems on our site. We've been looking into several options, this is simply one. We've used this in the past on certain product updates and never had any complaints, so we thought we'd give it a try on a more mainstream product. But, do not fear, we've just recently found an even better solution and that should not be more than a month away (I say a month because this "new solution" includes TONS more changes to our existing store as there are several aspects of it we're in the midst of improving ;) ).
Again, thanks for your understading,
Steve
DAZ Productions, Inc.
I bought the DAZ beard and I downloaded in without any problem. I do have a DSL connection. I didn't realize at first that I needed the other two files. I found out when I was installing. And even then it wasn't a problem, I just went back and got them. And by the way, I think I have the same set up as the person who originated this post. My Poser stuff is on a second computer which isn't connected to the internet. I download everything on this computer, save it to CD and install it on the other computer. Never had a problem with that. Kevin
Apparently according to another thread lower down, the path to Poser might be a problem. I have Poser on a separate firewire drive, drive G, and am beginning to have some problem with even PBoost not being able to find it. I'm wondering if the method of formating XP is involved. I did not use fat32, my tech advised against it. There's a lot of factors. However the thing I keep hearing over and over is that the beard is great but the textures are not. That's not encouraging. Emily
Well, both my drives are formatted as NTFS, and the install worked okay for me. So the file system shouldn't be the problem. However, neither of my drives are firewire, so I can't say what effect that would have. I always cancel the search for poser at the start of the install and direct it to the location of my poser files, which is C:graphicscuriouslabsPoser 4. I don't usually go beyond Poser 4 when I browse to where my files are located. In the beard case, I did go all the way to the file and even selected it, because it seemed that that's what the installer wanted me to do. (I usually cancel the search, because it seems to what to search every drive on my system, even CD drives if there are disks in them. That's why I cancel. It just takes too long to let it search itself.)
Not having tried it I shouldn't say anything, but it sounds lousy to me. Two-step installers are a royal PITA!!! At least in the normal DAZ installer (which is an .exe and WE HAVE NO CHOICE...I'd MUCH rather have a zip) you can now cancel out of the hunt for Poser and point the installer to the installation yourself. Man, for a while there I had THREE installs of Poser while teaching. One plain Jane so I wouldn't assume something came with Poser that didn't, one full Poser 4 and one full Pro Pack. Besides I have 60 gigs of stuff for the installer to hunt through...if I were forced to let the installer find anything I'd SCREAM. Besides which I always install everything Poser to a temporary folder...never ever ever install directly to Poser itself. Now for sure I'll bypass the Beard pack and anything else that uses this 'new' method. Sigh.
Well at least the Beard Pack is a DAZ creation.. therefore when there is a DAZ product sale I will consider it again, ONLY if the newer process makes it a one step install easy thing... is it the maps that make the package 30 MB?? Could the zips of maps be divided into several to download one at a time? Oh well.. will wait and see... Thanks for the imput everybody! Sara

I have seen this on some products: ______________________ Core Installer will not work without these files. These installers contain a second installer inside of them. This second installer will not be extracted until after the first one has verified your purchase. Purchase is verified by confirming that you have the original files on your system already installed. Please read all instructions carefully! ________________ and yes I checked your FAQ and didn't see something.. I feel dumb, but here goes.. I do not have Poser on my computer hooked up to the internet... will I be able to download my new purchase, and install the poser product?? I have Poser 4.3... do those additional files on the DAZ store page go IN to my Poser first, and reside there, so that when I do buy something from now on, it will install like always?? And if that is the case, I would only have to get those files and install them one time, right? I didn't write to DAZ because the above copied was all they said already, on the page... Their FAQ has nothing more specific on this new subject. Sorry for being so dumb!? Sara
