Subject: Fireflies

I would like to have some fireflies in the image I am working on now. They must give off light. I figured it would be a simple matter of making a volue visible light that was pale yellow in color, but to my horror changing the color of the cast light doesn't change the color of the volume visible light. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. =)

Try using a Gel and changing the material to resemble the color that you want. This should also change to color of the visible light object.

Aye, here's a quick render of two spherical volume lights... Actually, three renders, overlapped! The Purple on the left and the orange glow on the right represent the lights independent of each other, and when put in the same scene the middle effect is produced. The lights are simple : volume on, infinite on, and ranged. Change the color of the lights to match with the Material lab colors, for Diffuse, Ambience, Volume, etc.... Or mix them up for cool effects!

Oh yeah, here's the material settings, hope this is helpful in some way... Good luck, can't wait to see your fireflies!

Make a sphere or a metaball blob and make it additive with an ambience of more than 50. Make the ambient color light gold/yellow. Then make a spherical light and resize it to stick inside the "firefly." Then leave it as invisible and set the intensity to 30 and give it a ranged falloff. Then group the two things, dupliucate a few times, and do a light randomize.

Thanks for the suggestions. ;) I will be trying them out momentarily. Thanks for the randomize idea... I keep forgetting about that. =)

WyndWalker has a firefly mat at 3D Commune. You apply it to a sphere, then you can randomly resize, etc. Arleen

Oh rats. WyndWalker's mat is for PC only. But I'm sure others here will be able to use it. And I too have been trying to create this effect, so thanks to everyone who offered such great ideas and instruction.

Ohhh, I am so bummed. WyndWalker's MAT is no longer available.. Too bad, it looked way better than what I am doing. ;)

Kiera, maybe you could try sending her a PM over at 3D Commune? I just checked and she was online over there today.

Hope this helps.

Aww the heck with it. I just sent her a PM myself. I'd like to know if she has another sight since the other link is now dead. I also asked her if she may ever be offering a Mac version of this mat.

I'll let you know if I hear anything and I also gave her the link to this thread.

Hope this helps! The file was on an old site, and my new one is still being put together. I uploaded the firefly to a temp download folder. http://wyndwalker.danbo.com/downloads/Firefly.zip Let me know if you have any trouble and sorry for any inconvenience :-) Wynd

Wow, hey thanks! I went to eat lunch and missed all the additions to the thread. Thanks Ariannah for sending the PM, and double thanks to you Wyndwalker for giving the new URL to the MAT. No inconvenience at all; it's free and outstanding. =) Thanks again! =)
