I have now started work on a free uninstaller for Poser library files. Using this program, you will get a listing of all CR2 (and other) files currently in the Poser library and have the option to uninstall them and their supporting files (OBJ, texture maps, etc.).

The uninstalled files will not be deleted, as they will be moved to the recycle bin incase you accidently delete the wrong files.

If anyone would like to provide some input towards this project, please feel free to post your opinions here.

I will be forever grateful and in your eternal debt for this program. Yep! ;o)

Sacred Rose ( ) posted Tue, 27 August 2002 at 8:13 PM

That would be a godsend!!

Jcleaver ( ) posted Tue, 27 August 2002 at 8:22 PM

Could it be tweaked to instead of deleting to move all files to a new folder, just in case you want to keep a project together?

Jcleaver ( ) posted Tue, 27 August 2002 at 8:24 PM

English really is my native tongue! LOL! What I mean is, would it be possible to offer a choice of either deleting files, or moving the files to a separate folder?

konan ( ) posted Tue, 27 August 2002 at 8:24 PM

I was just thinking of the program having it's own "recycle bin", which is simply a folder. It can be used for this purpose. ------------------------------------------------- David John Fielder (Konan) Proprietor of Innuendo Software http://innuendo.ev.ca

Cool!

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Tue, 27 August 2002 at 8:42 PM

I take it that it reads the CR2 (or whatever) to find references to the external geometry, textures, etc. which it will delete? What if it's a Posette character, for instance? Will it zap the P4NudeWom.obj file, rendering all other Posette characters unusable unless you restore the file manually? It might be a good idea to include a "Do not delete geometry" option for those Poser-critical files.

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Tue, 27 August 2002 at 8:45 PM

Come to think of it, you might not want to delete some other files, also, like Poser's reflection maps. How about if it lists the associated files, and you can manually uncheck those you don't want to delete?

konan ( ) posted Tue, 27 August 2002 at 8:48 PM

You will be prompted before any files are deleted, and you will have the option to remove any file from the delete list. A safelist (of files not to delete) would be useful. Once could be generated for all of the default Poser geometry files, and perhaps some of Daz3D's. The most important thing will be to have the user inspect the list before the files are deleted. You know, if you give the program its own recyle bin it make it easy for us to packing files. If you give users an option to copy to a recycle bin, or other directory for later zipping instead of deleting them it would make packing cr2 and pp2 files a breeze.

konan ( ) posted Tue, 27 August 2002 at 9:11 PM

I have already programmed the stuff to 1) Locate all cr2 and pp2 files in the Poser folder and lists them in a box 2) Clicking on a cr2 or pp2 file lists it's contents in another box 3) Clicking a button will locate any missing file in the second box What I have to do now is "Move" the files to another location (or delete them outright). Sounding good so far? ------------------------------------------------- David John Fielder (Konan) Proprietor of Innuendo Software http://innuendo.ev.ca

konan ( ) posted Tue, 27 August 2002 at 9:15 PM

Almost forgot to add the hair files (*.hr2). Am I missing anything? I have CR2 PP2 HR2 Anything else to uninstall? ------------------------------------------------- David John Fielder (Konan) Proprietor of Innuendo Software http://innuendo.ev.ca

wdupre ( ) posted Tue, 27 August 2002 at 9:50 PM

How about a "copy to" option that would not remove the files from the runtime folder but copy them to the folder of choice this would be great for those of us who render in bryce or other 3d programs?

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Tue, 27 August 2002 at 9:52 PM

MAT poses (PP2)? They reference the textures. Don't forget to remove the thumbnails (PNG and/or RSR), also.

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Tue, 27 August 2002 at 9:55 PM

Oops, that should read "MAT poses (PZ2)" instead. Sorry.

All good suggestions. Please keep em coming. ------------------------------------------------- David John Fielder (Konan) Proprietor of Innuendo Software http://innuendo.ev.ca

PabloS ( ) posted Tue, 27 August 2002 at 10:59 PM

If it would do pz3 files, we could archive our "projects." Please?

Stormrage ( ) posted Tue, 27 August 2002 at 11:31 PM

also cm2's because people are using them for mat files as well

Stormrage ( ) posted Tue, 27 August 2002 at 11:33 PM

btw THANK YOU THANK YOU.. i was so afraid my suggestion wouldn't be taken :)

wyrwulf ( ) posted Tue, 27 August 2002 at 11:48 PM

As wdupre said, a copy function would be great. I think that an option to retain the folder structure for redistribution or to save to one folder for importing to another program for rendering, with a checklist of what files to use would be good. Your "delete" program sure is changing in this thread, isn't it? Brainstorming can be fun.

dragongirl ( ) posted Wed, 28 August 2002 at 12:28 AM

I have always wished for something like this, since there was no option in Poser 4 to selectively NOT install those 400MB of content I never use. :-)

Xena ( ) posted Wed, 28 August 2002 at 3:03 AM

FC2, as a few people are using those for MAT files nowadays. And thank you for creating such a wonderfully useful utility.

c1rcle ( ) posted Wed, 28 August 2002 at 3:43 AM

could we possibly have the ability to print out the lists or save them to text files? then if it's being used to package something we can include the list in the readme. Rob

Dave ( ) posted Wed, 28 August 2002 at 8:01 AM

Ok that's good for the standard issue of Poser. But what about Pro Pack and Poser 5? There supposed to handle compressed files. Which means they wont have the typical extension. Pro Pack changes a CR2 to CRZ. Will this utility go looking for CRZ and other related files also?

konan ( ) posted Wed, 28 August 2002 at 10:59 AM

Compressed files WILL BE SUPPORTED (collective hurrays heard in the distance). ------------------------------------------------- David John Fielder (Konan) Proprietor of Innuendo Software http://innuendo.ev.ca

JeffH ( ) posted Wed, 28 August 2002 at 11:40 AM

You might as well support every possible type of poser library file. ;-)

Bobasaur ( ) posted Wed, 28 August 2002 at 1:06 PM

Obviously, this has been too easy. Let's up the ante... Instead of just copying and /or deleting, How about it looks through the links in the .pz3 or character files and change them all so that when the archive is reinstalled all of the elements can all be kept in the archive folder. MacInstaller gives the option of keeping things in the source folder but it will move obj files to specific directories in order to maintain the links. I'd like the links changed so all of my files can stay where I unzipped them.

Bobasaur ( ) posted Wed, 28 August 2002 at 1:14 PM

You might also consider allowing us to "Add files" to the archive. I've started keeping relevant Read Me files with my projects so i can give proper credit. It would be nice to manually add them to the archive. Or extra textures and stuff that I might use in the project sequal. BTW, I don't think for one minute this is actually easy. I really do appreciate that you're willing to take on the challenge!

What I would like to see, is a poser file integrety checker. Looks like you have the basis for it already in place, but clicking individual files would be a pain for this sort of task. Produce a listing of all files (cr2, pp2, etc) which reference items that are a. in the wrong place, or b. just plain missing and the references in question. This done, of course, in batch mode, with a text file output. I recently did a reinstall of P4 onto a larger partition, and still find textures that haven't been moved (trying to avoid moving things that I don't use). Not a big deal, but it takes forever for p4 to alert you of missing textures/bums/etc. Not to mention that I do a lot of rearranging of everything (including obj files) which can make some files unusable until I fix their references (missing/incorrectly located obj files have a habit of causing parts of the scene to be removed....not good) Oh well, That is my suggestion eric

konan ( ) posted Wed, 28 August 2002 at 2:09 PM

Hey Bobasaur, Actually, compared to MaxPose, truePose, Natural Pose and Extreme Morph 3D, this project is extremely simple. I have already prototyped it. I just added support for all of the compressed file types. It was extremely simple. All I did was download the command line program for gzip and the uninstaller calls upon it whenever decompression is necessary. Be prepared for a beta version tonight or tomorrow. Hey Eric, I won't be adding the integrety checker to this right away. In the beinning, it will merely be an uninstaller (with the option to copy or move instead of delete). It will however evolve into a more complex program with extra features. Right now, it will search for any missing files within the Poser folder (and sub folders of course). I did not choose the runtime folder as being the starting point because P5 is supposed to have multiple runtime folders. It will move/delete these files, however it will not "patch" the original CR2 file with the missing links. Again, these features may be added at a future time. ------------------------------------------------- David John Fielder (Konan) Proprietor of Innuendo Software http://innuendo.ev.ca

Don't get me wrong. I've been smashing my head against a brick wall for many years now. I've paid my dues (it was not an easy path) but here I am. Anyway, enough about my stress relieving techniques. I now have the program running such that it searches for all library files (and their compressed versions as well). This also includes any PZ3 files that you may have in the Poser folder. Clicking on any file will reveal it's dependencies. Their thumbnails (RSR or PNG files) are listed as well. You can then delete (or move) some or all of the files associated with the library file. Beta coming really soon! ------------------------------------------------- David John Fielder (Konan) Proprietor of Innuendo Software http://innuendo.ev.ca

My secret wish is that someone will give me a walnut plaque with a brass plate on it that I can mount on the wall somewhere at head height. That way when things get stressfull I can bang my head against something nice instead of putting dents in the wall. See the 4.5 Mb QuickTime movie via the link and watch me bang my brains out!

I have a directory in my libraries called 'delete' and use pbooost to move the junk in there, then I trash the contents in file manager. Works fine that way for me, but I suppose this idea would be faster.
