OK... now there are windows galore....is this better?

Only problem now is...it's hardly a BACK alley with all those front windows now, is it?

But perhaps it doesn't matter?

I dunno. Comments?

(oh and this is a temporary texture, and there is now glass in the windows yet (or anymore?)

... maybe security bars on the lower windows?

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Thu, 29 August 2002 at 11:24 AM

Yeah, I plan on putting either bars or (more likely) boards across the windows :o) This is mostly to check if this is the right type of windows or not. I think they look something like those on LD's pictures (in another thread) Oh and THANK YOU for the spiral curls, CryptoPooka :o)))

Much better proportions on the windows. This looks like the back side of a commercial building in any older urban neighborhood.

This is starting to look really good ernyoka. I can imagine all sorts of seedy goings on will be happening in this back alley. Jack

One thing I see is that the windows are almost as big as the door, and are at nearly the same level. Perhaps the door should be taller and the windows higher?

Instead of raising the windows, how about putting in a stairwell and lowering the door to create the impression of an entrance to a partly-below-ground-level room (as is frequently the case with buildings built in un-level ground with the freont at street level) Suggestion: give each window a broken morph so users can have the individual panes broken or intact as they want. Maybe also give each of them a disappear (no window) morph so users can vary the number of windows, thus making the set more versatile.

The no-windows morph would be good but is not possible as the model is made, the windows are actual holes in the wall, and I would have to remake the model in order to do that. I'll try making the textures now and then we'll see how it looks :o) Altering the stairs and door will also mean a total rebuild of the model so first I'll try it with textures on.

That's a great brick texture. I can't find the houses part of my pictures from New York but I do have some more walls and stuff from Soho and the Meat Market which is the seediest part of town-- and the place where Punk clubs would spring up in the 90's. Still want them? There are sidewalks and cobblestones and wierd boarded up houses. One where the windows weren't just boarded up but cemented in. 30 rolls of film and the roll of the Brownstones is on walkabout.:(( Emily

One way of solving this and also to make the scene more versatile is to include two walls (as props) in the package: One with windows, one without. Then it's easy to just use the one that is most suitable.

Swannie ( ) posted Thu, 29 August 2002 at 3:30 PM

As an old constructor I can tell you that the level the bricks compared to the windows and door is not right. No one in construction could make bricks like that around a door. On a door or window the brick is always as a whole, not made smaller. That's the way the door and windows are set out before the bricklayer comes along. Just a tip. Also the scale of the bricks compared to the windows and door is far too big. Generally you have around 19 to 20 bricks on top of each other before you cover the height of the door. In most cases the brick used in this image is around 10 cm high + cementlayer = 11 cm. General doorway height around 210 to 215 cm. With windows it's another matter, cos they vary a lot more in height. No criticism, just some helpfull pointers... hopefully! :-) Sorry about my annoying small detail pointers, but that's just the experience in construction. Hope it helped you! Finest regards, Johnnie...

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Thu, 29 August 2002 at 4:18 PM

Johnnie :o) I know the scale is wrong, but this isn't the final texture either. The door is 220 cm and the windows are 180x100. Fairly big windows, but I know of a lot of windows that large :o) Thanks for pointing out the details, I love when people take the time to look throughly (sp?) at the stuff I make. I know when I have to compromise, and I usually pray noone notices G But of course someone always DO :o) and well, that makes me better as I don't want TOO many people pointing fingers and saying "see, THAT'S wrong TOO..."

Let me see... I do see a lot more... where should I start??? Nah... ;-) I agree on you with the windows... and that's what I said, they vary a lot more in height and width. Doors, and especially in this set-up, are generally 210/215 cm and mostly 100 cm wide. It's not a church door of course! Good luck with this and if you ever make another construction prop, feel free to ask me for a critical eye on details. wink You can find me in... The Attic! Hehehe...

Swannie ( ) posted Thu, 29 August 2002 at 4:30 PM

Geez, no tool time, typo time!!! :-) I meant: I agree with you on the windows!

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Thu, 29 August 2002 at 7:46 PM

Have bars and boards on each window. If you give each element separate materials, we can choose which is visible. You could brick-up the bottommost windows with a separate material, also. This would give us four variations: window, boarded-window, barred-window, bricked-up-window. Broken window panes can be achieved with textures and transparency maps. No need for morphs. That new brick texture looks much better than the previous one. The repeated tiling was a little too apparent.
