Atom,
Photoshop's "Brushes" open up a whole new range of possibilities when it comes to creating artistic effects to your renderings. You can create imagery that looks as if it was painted using natural media. They can be used to create realistic grass or leaves, add stitching to cloth, create realistic highlights and shadows, you can even create some smoke or clouds for that matter.

They are VERY timesaving and worth the time invested in experminting with them. If you get to Borders or Barnes & Noble (or Amazon.com), there is a great book on this subject by Bert Monroy, called Photoshop Studio.

  • Select the brush tool
  • Right click on image and brush selector window comes up
  • Click the right triangle in circle to pull down menu
  • Select Load Brushes and browse to where you put the .abr file

If you put the .abr in presetsbrushes folder then you don't have to Load Brushes. The Brushes will be listed at bottom of that pulldown ready to select. When asked "Replace current brushes with the brushes from whatever.abr", select append and it will add to you brushes rather than replacing existing ones. Close down Photoshop before moving .abr files.

tick tick tick tick ... is it tomorrow yet? lol
sitting on hands tempted to post some samples of neat grunge and hair/fur brushes although the brush dynamics have been greatly improved in Photoshop 7.
