Subject: Poser Cars...is there a need for them!?!?

Hi....I modeled cars...and these are some of my work. I was wondering if there is a demand for cars like these for Poser props or anyone that might want to buy them, because I want to sell these at the marketplace...please let me kno. Much appreciation.

darien_dx ( ) posted Sun, 01 September 2002 at 2:39 AM

sorry.....I model cars..not "modeled".cuz I still do...

EricofSD ( ) posted Sun, 01 September 2002 at 3:17 AM

Yes there is. DAZ has some and I recently had occasion to buy one of Dudly's cars for an upholstery shop web site logo. Some of the cars are quite expensive. Some have doors and hoods that are poseable. The more they pose, the better they are. Your cars look great, by the way.

darien_dx ( ) posted Sun, 01 September 2002 at 3:49 AM

hmmm..would u pay $20 for a model like above if the doors and hood were posable??

elsja ( ) posted Sun, 01 September 2002 at 4:01 AM

Amazing Car. Guy

EricofSD ( ) posted Sun, 01 September 2002 at 4:10 AM

If I needed it for commercial work I would certainly pay that price. I paid about that for Dudley's mustang (maybe a bit more), but I needed that car as it was the best one on the net for showing upholstery. He even made a rag top for it out of kindness when I said I was looking for one. Great guy. Its a specialty item. There are a lot of free cars around, for non commercial use. Most folks grab those. But for commercial use, life is different. I don't know what to tell you about the price. Folks get that kind of money for skin textures on the human models if they are really well done. Cars I think are not as popular, but there is still a need for it. See what others think. Some of the cars on TurboSquid are three times that price. I didn't buy there. DAZ seems to like to broker them for around $25 or so.

FWTempest ( ) posted Sun, 01 September 2002 at 4:20 AM

absolutely, $15-$25 isn't asking too much for a high quality model as long as it's got plenty morphs to play around with. Some of Duddly's cars are on my wish list (as soon as I'm out of the dog-house for ordering that graphics tablet without letting the missus know), and I've got a couple of his free ones. I'd love to add these to my collection. I know a 'wish list' doesn't put money in your pocket, but I have no doubt that there are plenty folks out there with a larger budget than mine who would probably snap up models like these as soon as they are made available.

toashzadel ( ) posted Sun, 01 September 2002 at 5:43 AM

The is definitely a need for poser cars!!! You can't be a proper Poser without a nice car! ;) sorry, bad joke! I couldn't resist!.... but we still need cars! Those cars are gorgeous, but I would also prefer ordinary everyday cars... and sadly what looks like a ferrari is not everyday for me! :( how about modelling fords, or toyotas? :)

x2000 ( ) posted Sun, 01 September 2002 at 7:06 AM

I agree. I've seen lots of sports cars, but what I'd pay bucks for are boring, everyday cars that I can use in graphic novels or whatever. Those seem to be exceedingly rare.

Niles ( ) posted Sun, 01 September 2002 at 9:08 AM

$20.00 would be fair, I just purchased a 61 vette for about that. I also agree that everyday cars are in short supply, I would gladly pay $20.00 for a bigger Family type car it could also be used for police cruiser which I am always looking for. Niles

bikermouse ( ) posted Sun, 01 September 2002 at 9:28 AM

darien_dx, Good looking models! Don't forget the front wheels. they should pose as well. If the wheels turned also that would be a plus for animation. What I'd do is offer it for $8.00 (US) for a limited time. then at $15 or $20. per x2000: Columbo's car. I know it was French. cars from the 20's. Motorcycles (American, British.) 80's buicks(Low riders) nash rambler. 1980s Toyota corolla. 1980s Honda civic.

notefinger ( ) posted Sun, 01 September 2002 at 10:58 AM

Here's another vote for more bacic everyday cars.

Crescent ( ) posted Sun, 01 September 2002 at 11:46 AM

I'd love to see normal cars and SUVs: Honda Civics, Ford Escorts, Saturns, all the stuff you see on the highways. My Poser people have spent so much on textures and clothes that they can't afford to drive Ferraris. ;-)

TalmidBen ( ) posted Sun, 01 September 2002 at 12:01 PM

I would definitely like to get a car for Poser, but all of the cars that are out now are based on real life cars, with names and everything. This brings up a copyright question, and I would only buy something that allows me to create commercial renders with. Henceforth, I plan to release in the future an extensive project based on a car (that's all I can say!) . . . but I would buy one, just not one with a manufacturer's name on it, because I would like to use them in commercial renders. . . ben

Nice looking cars. There is a demand for Poser cars, but not as high as one might like. Currently Adr & I are making classic cars for Poser and Brokering through DAZ. Sales are actually quite mediocre but the two of us enjoy it so we keep doing it. If you need help or pointers in poserizing your cars feel free to ask. Also you might want to check with us from time to time to make certain we don't duplicate models. As was pointed out, I try to make mine fully detailed (Engines, interiors, drivetrains, undercarriages, trunks, etc.) and articulated including full body morphs. Those are needed to get the front wheels and steering to turn together as well as all wheels to rotate as the same time. They sell through DAZ for $24.95. This is what I am currently working on:

notefinger ( ) posted Sun, 01 September 2002 at 1:58 PM

How about a Poser car that can be morphed into any car! I'm being serious about this. How far could one take this? That way a custom car could be made for any occasion.

darien_dx ( ) posted Sun, 01 September 2002 at 1:58 PM

do people actually buy the cars on turbosquid?? They're like $50+ per model. Anyways..,thx for the response..I will have to poserize my models first..

bikermouse ( ) posted Sun, 01 September 2002 at 2:31 PM

Good Point Ben. Sometimes I think we go too far with this copyright/patent thing. Did you know that Harley Davidson actually wanted to patent the sound a Harley makes going down the road - although you almost have to buy aftermarket tailpipes to achieve it? But since copyright is an issue perhaps an original model would be best to sell as mostly the people that buy things like that have a commercial reason for doing so. notefinger, I can visualize a car that morphs between two different models using morphs, but what you're talking about seems impossable to me. There is so much talent out there I hope someone proves me wrong. A very creative idea by the way. that's not shaken - not stirred, - TJ

steveshanks ( ) posted Sun, 01 September 2002 at 2:46 PM

Well i'd buy the bottom one to use with the DAZ race driver i bought years ago ;o)....but i'd also like to see some every day cars and i'd also like to see some detailed ones like the movie "fast and furious"..and a new mini..if you ever fancy modeling an audi give me a yell i'd love my car as a model LOL........Steve

bikermouse ( ) posted Sun, 01 September 2002 at 7:28 PM

Ratteler, I'd include a low res version if it's gonna get that complex - (for all those autos in the background just sitting in line for TREX to do his handy work.) Those hires guys'll eat up memory pretty fast. And why not the Daz Dragon or ScottA's Godzilla?

darien_dx ( ) posted Sun, 01 September 2002 at 7:42 PM

Great...I'll model the AE 86 Trueno (In America it's the Toyota Corolla GTS) next...but im' completely clueless about poserizing and texturing :(

bikermouse ( ) posted Sun, 01 September 2002 at 7:59 PM

Cool. Texturing and Morphs will come to you. There are a lot of tutorials on both. Don't be afraid to ask about them if you need help finding tutorials or need to solve a problem with morphing or textures. There's usually somebody that knows what to do. - TJ

Bikermouse: I'm working now on a Metropolitan, which I should be able to reshape easily into a 1953-55 Rambler, or '58-60 Rambler American, which is pretty much the same car. Is this the kind of Rambler you're thinking of?

I don't know anything about this godZILLA model as I haven't downloaded it but there you go. He could kick them
around or pick them up - It's all in the way you write the script you know.

I'd love some nice medium to low rez cars - and some wrecked ones as well. Everything from bashed in panels to complete accordian front damage. And could somebody please do a nice 1970's era singlescreen VW van?

a 70's VW bus is nothing much more than a box, I am actually surprised there isn't a model of one out there already. As that fits in the 1940-70 time period if you can help me find some reference material for the textures I wouldn't mind cranking a 1970 VW Bus out as a freebee pretty quickly. BTW, My mother had one when I was growing up. She had her whole hippy period in the early to mid 70's.

Lyrra ( ) posted Tue, 03 September 2002 at 2:42 PM

duddly, Texture wise - do you want factory colors or hippy paintjobs? I have a friend who restores vintage VW kitcars who should be able to scare up useful photos for you. I do have a badly modeled one already (3dcafe) but I really like the level of detail that you put in your vehicles. I spent most of my childhood riding in one of those - so I'm kind of picky. :) Lyrra

Duddly ( ) posted Tue, 03 September 2002 at 3:34 PM

Photos of details would be the most helpful as would a good side and frontal shot. Paint schemes make little difference as anything I build is designed to give the end user the ability to design the paint scheme any may the like. It would likely come in blue and white two tone as that is how my mother's was. I think she would get a kick out of it. Keep in mind, as a freebee it would likely have a detailed body and wheels, no engine or undercarriage and a simple interior. Granted they were very simple as it was. Instant message me if you get anything together.

Fellow Poser users;
After 4-5 phone calls to Daz last year, it became clear to me that the car models Daz sells/brokers do NOT come with the proper licensing that would allow someone to use one of the models in any commercial endeavor. Use them, or any other model you find on the net, at your own risk.

Duddly ( ) posted Wed, 04 September 2002 at 10:44 AM

Obviously a time to clear a few things up. The only time licensing generally becomes an issue with car models is when you try to use a companies logo's or trademarks in a way that would offend or directly compete with that company. If there were an issue of using cars in any art form many t-shirt vendors would go out of business as would many artists that sell auto art prints and such. Not to mention many movie companies that use classic cars. There has been a long term precident set already and there are numerous 3d models available without a peep. In the Computer games industry (where I work) licensing is obtained mainly because the said cars are to be represented as accurate representation not only in looks but driving characteristics where if not accurate that would certainly offend an auto maker. Some games, Tokyo Extreme Racer Series for example, use quite accurate car models but give them slightly differen't names and logos. With that said I have still started making the logos and trim on my models able to be turned off for end users that are nervous about law suits. For instance if you are concerned about using the 57' T-bird for some odd reason just go into the hierarchy editor and turn off the trim.

#34, I understand your concern, but it is not warranted. As #35 said, there is a "fair use" to using vehicle images. This was presented back in my business school days. That is why you can have an ad that includes a vehicle - such as for fast food, etc. There is a "fair use" to the image, as long as you do not do something that seriously harms the copyright's public image(such as a picture of the car running over babies). Many video games go out of their way to license vehicles strictly for the purpose of being able to give their players the supposed thrill of driving said vehicle. Plus if they are going to explicitly advertise they are using the vehicle, then they are making money off of the vehicle specifically, as opposed to something that is peripheral. Then Detroit (and Japan, Germany...) may get upset. - Ray

Oh yeah, Duddley, if you are so inclided, a Jeep Wranlger would be awesome, and that one could even have morphs for teh XJ, YJ, and TJ models (all are slight variations in external appearance, mostly slope of the windshield, front grill/lights. The interiors, though, have a lot more variation. - Ray

Ryamka, There is already a nice free Jeep model that can be imported into poser at this link.

ryamka ( ) posted Thu, 05 September 2002 at 5:50 PM

Thanks, Duddly, I already have that one. It is a pretty good (and very usable) model, but... (acting childish) it is not a real Jeep. We are anal retentative buggers. :) - Ray

Okay, I'm like, 4 months behind here... BUT... I agree. In my poserland... they're not all in hollywood... BMW's, blah blah blah, (I couldn't remember how to spell the fancier cars names)and after searching SINCE I got poser 4 in August, I still haven't been able to come across a decent looking cop car (free might I add) but have been able to come across some good links, and made some crashed cars myself. Here's a few links if your interested. http://www.planit3d.com/index.htm then onto meshes files. Then there's 3dBuzz.com, and give www.justmodels.com a shot, its a 3d search engine.

I've done a bicycle that I sell at DAZ, and a sailboat that I sell at PoserPros, I enjoyed doing them, as a change of pace, but sales have never ben all that good. What might sell well would be a racecar (as above) with a driving suit and helmet and gloves for Mike, and a spectators set with halter top and cutt-off for Vickie (or maybe with the sexes swapped the other way). Of course, then you would have to have the abilty to make both kinds of Poser models! ;-) On the trademark side, DAZ (Zygote then) made me change the tiny logo on the watch face I did as part of the clothing set that was in my very first item for their store from "Timex", I gather they aren't that fussy anymore!
