Subject: Dragon Poses and BVH files for the M-dragon

ppowellaa ( ) posted Sun, 01 September 2002 at 5:57 PM · edited Tue, 24 December 2024 at 11:34 AM

Out of cuiosity I downloaded all the different dragon poses and 3 BVH files from the free section and found all of them to be functional with the exception of the land dragon poses (they do nothing). Even though the BVH files give a lot of error when loading, when done, they seem to work pretty well.

Caroluk ( ) posted Sun, 01 September 2002 at 6:13 PM

I got so many errors in the mat files, because the program was looking for .bum files and everything was a .jpg, that it kept crashing Poser. When I tried to open the dragon again after a crash, the obj file was always corrupted and I had to keep removing it and reinstalling it. Eventually, before loading any mat files, I went through all the model, loading the jpgs for bump files so that the program made the necessary .bum files. Now the dragon and the materials all load with no problems. I did not notice dragon poses. I must have missed something. Back to Daz3d.

What I bought was the dragon textures, and downloaded the free LE dragon. I cannot see any poses in the free section, but I think I will get the full dragon while he is on spedial offer.

the Land Dragon poses are for a different dragon I'm afraid.. there's I think 4 dragons now availible.. the Land Dragon, plain dragon, Daz Dragon and the Mill Dragon.. oops and the Storybook Dragon... Oh! and the Hatchling Dragon! hmmm..... can feel a proper Dragon War coming on here... Kai

The poses and BVH are in the Renderosity free section, not DAZ. If you are getting the errror you probably loaded the textures out of the wrong folder (there is a P4 and a PP version).

ppowellaa ( ) posted Sun, 01 September 2002 at 6:51 PM

The posses are not specificaly for M-dragon, but they are a good start, better than from scratch. I just did a search for dragon in the poser section.

CrystalDragon ( ) posted Sun, 01 September 2002 at 9:04 PM

This is nuts! For the longest time, there was only the plain old DAZ dragon, and (correct me if I'm wrong) Haukusai's (or maybe its Anton's?) Wyvern. Now, there's to many of them! Im a dragon fanatic! You modelers are going to drive me to the poor house! (On the other hand, Im thrilled!) Keep up the good work! ^__^ ~DM

how do umake the model load the jpegs instead of the bum file? or do u just creat bump variants in psp or something similar?

Puntomaus ( ) posted Mon, 02 September 2002 at 1:09 AM

The MilDragon Matfiles are divided into two folders: P4 is for Poser 4 (which requires Bum files) and PP is for Poser ProPack (which needs only the JPG). If you have Poser4 you have to convert the bumfiles yourself before you apply any Matpose - DAZ only provides them in JPG fileformat.

Well, I bought the full Mil. dragon, which is supposed to have poses according to the Daz 3d store info, but I still cannot find poses. I have written to Daz tech support, but meanwhile I will look at the ones in the Renderosity free stuff. Thanks for the info on that, ppowellaa.

Puntomaus ( ) posted Mon, 02 September 2002 at 3:56 AM

It HAS poses: 28 Poses * 16 Map (MAT) Poses * 9 Visibility (VIS/MOR) Poses * 3 Display (DISP) Poses But these are poses to change the textures or to make parts visible/invisible. No poses to make the Dragon sit, fly etc. Guess that's in the freebies this week.

Light dawns! Thank you Putomaus. Sometimes I don't think Daz and I speak the same language. To me poses are presets which make it sit, stand, wave its claws about and so on. I don't call different textures poses. I am not at all sure why Daz have started this rather strange line either. It seems to have started with the gorilla - putting the texture maps in with the poses, but at least we got real poses too. Let's hope you are right and the real dragon poses are this week's freebies.

Y'know, on occasion I've had this urge to glue ping-pong balls to my body and run around in front of a motion-capture camera. But I always lie down and take a nap until it passes.

I've still got that animated pose I created for my first Millennium Dragon animation. If anyone wants it, I can clean it up a bit and put it in Free Stuff with everyone else's.

You're welcome, Caroluk :-). Oh please, Little Dragon, I really would love to have it :-)

Kaibach: I think your falling about a dozen dragon short! Anton alone has: Wingless Dragon, Dragon V1 & V2 Story Book Dragon Skeleton Dragon then there's Debra's Baby Dragon, PhilC's Dragon, the Wyvern(no longer available), Ultimate Dragon, DAZ Dragon, Mil Dragon......let's see, what else am I missing??

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Mon, 02 September 2002 at 5:26 PM

I'd post the complete list for you, igohigh, but since it's already been done (with illustrations) ....

The Almost-Complete Poser Dragons Roll-Call Thread

The only creatures missing from the visual record are the Imagination Works dragon and DAZ's new Millennium Dragon, although one or two others are currently in development.

Wladamire ( ) posted Mon, 02 September 2002 at 7:48 PM

ok how do i make bum files i converted all of em to .bmp but not .bum cause psp 7 doesnt have that

igohigh ( ) posted Mon, 02 September 2002 at 8:18 PM

Wow, I think the Majestic dragon is going to give them all a run for their treasures!! Thanks Little Dragon, I forgot about that thread.

ppowellaa ( ) posted Mon, 02 September 2002 at 8:45 PM

to get the bum file, you need to load the bump file into the bump chanel and poser will ask if you want to creat the bum. I am suprised (and disapointed) that they did not include bum files!

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Mon, 02 September 2002 at 9:25 PM

DAZ packages the JPEGs because Poser can convert them to BUM format, Pro Pack can use them directly, and we can edit the JPEGs in a paint program. BUM files don't compress as well as JPEGs, plus they aren't really suitable for editing due to the conversion process. If DAZ included the BUMs in the package, the filesize would double, and people on dialup would be unhappy with the increased download times; despite the increasing presence of broadband, most Internet users are still on dialup. If DAZ distributed the BUMs alone, we couldn't easily modify them.

ppowellaa ( ) posted Tue, 03 September 2002 at 5:49 AM

Thanks, that makes sence!

Wladamire ( ) posted Wed, 04 September 2002 at 1:00 PM

so i can modify the jpegs and save them as a new name and somehow creat a silver dragon texture just by messing with the jpeg in psp?

Valandar ( ) posted Wed, 04 September 2002 at 2:00 PM

Actually, Little Dragon, there's another dragon missing - my own T'ien Long dragon, that came out before Royloo posted -HIS- Oriental dragon. When I get home, I really should post it to that thread...
