Subject: Rant about geometry files

HeWhoWatches ( ) posted Thu, 05 September 2002 at 10:41 PM · edited Sat, 18 January 2025 at 11:06 PM

I resent like hell attempts to dictate to me my library structure within Poser. People who put geometry files into library directories in an attempt to stroke their own egos are self-important dipshits. Since I can't be bothered to edit the .cr file to point to a new directory, I simply delete the offending material -- something which makes me decidedly unhappy after spending hours downloading files at 28.8k.

It's not ego that's causing people to put the geometry file into the character library, it's Poser Pro Pack. You are really going to be in a foul mood when Poser 5 gets into full swing. It's not that much work to edit the Cr2 if you feel the need, or just live with the file placement. You are missing some very good downloads.

This is the most stupid posting I have seen at this forum Eveyone dictates to you where you put your files in just about every programn ever written.

I agree tasmanet as a programer there is a reason why file go in certian place cause if code or files get put in the wrong place all you will get is a program with a bunch of errors and crashes....;-)

LOL, I agree that this is one of the more unusual complaints I've seen here. :) HeWhoWatches, it really isn't that hard to edit the CR2s to point to your choice of directories. Just open it in a text editor (even Notepad will do for small ones), and change the line near the top that points to the source directory. I added a folder in my Geometries directory called "Misc" for any OBJ files that originally were supposed to go in a Library folder and just dump them all in there. This is why I don't create CR2/PP2 that uses external geometry, only internal geometry. Only one file and easy to use

Stupidity also evolves!

phoenixamon ( ) posted Fri, 06 September 2002 at 8:49 AM

I like to put my files where I like to put them, but this is plain silly. The creator of the CR2 has to choose some location for the installation of their OBJ. It's not as if they can leave it blank, and it's not as if there were a well-defined structure for placement of OBJ files in the shipping version of P4 which artists ought to have strictly adhered to. Exactly what is the alernative? Phoenix

I was also under the impression that most other 3d formats stick everything in one sub directory anyway ??

JHoagland ( ) posted Fri, 06 September 2002 at 9:58 AM

Actually, if you're trying to download files using a 28.8k modem, then editting cr2 files should be the least of your worries! :-) By the way, at that speed, how long does it take the typical Renderosity page to load? You must have near-saintly patience- I get frustrated when a Gallery page takes more than 20 seconds to load (and I'm on a cable modem!). --John

I like geometry file in the library folder, that way they are easy to find, but I do wonder if this adds to the time it takes Poser to read in the pallet.

KateTheShrew ( ) posted Fri, 06 September 2002 at 12:36 PM

I like the geometry files in the GEOMETRIES folder. That way I don't get a bunch of seemingly empty folders cluttering up my libraries. (Like I would keep vicky characters in any folder other than one marked "Characters-Vicky" PUHLEEEZE) Kate (who does a LOT of .cr2 editing and never EVER installs directly into Poser 4)

1 minute exactly, john. I use a 28.8 at work, blah. In fact that is where I am now, but this late on a friday my job is to watch the fax machine and see if anything spits out...so I get some play time. The only thing that bothers me on geometries is when they place them in the libraries folders instead of geometries drives me crazy. I only have two that do that now, I've really got to edit those ones.

Anybody that doesn't follow the convention, which is put geometry in the Geometry folder, is a Cad and a Bounder, how's that? ;-)

nikitacreed ( ) posted Fri, 06 September 2002 at 8:52 PM

56K modems can be purchased for as low as $9.99. Personally...I get annoyed if a page doesn't download in 2 seconds on my DSL modem. ROFL! If I had to go back to 56K I would have to shoot myself. ;o)
