Nice photos. The first one is a bit out of focus as you say, but not all over the place as far as I can see. Is it because you used a too big aperture ? I'm trying to understand these things myself .... The horse looks quite alright to me. I think this is a difficult shot - also because of the brightness at the bottom. How to do to get everything right in a situation like this ? What did you use ?
This might help... I run this through my head when setting up a shots Large depth of field = small aperture = large f number = slower shutter speeds Small depth of field = large aperture = small f numbers = faster shutter speeds You can turn them round if its the shutter speed you are interested in. :O)

Alpha, This woman looks like a gipsy beggar woman to me. She doesn't seem to be an unhappy person - she looks much more like a smart person to me. She reminds me a bit of the witch in "Snowwhite". I wouldn't be surprised if when the night falls, that she would stand upright and have no need for her stick anymore. Judging from her skin - particularly the arms, I don't think she is a very old person. I think that she has just found a nice spot in a street of Florence where the tourists are generous. I like the way she's sort of isolated from the surrounding people too.
