This is Default Don in his default pose. When rendered using the P4 engine all's well, but when I render with firefly, there's that poly missing in the shirt. Just checking to see... is it me or is it everyone? Phoenix

Here's Don rendered with default everything. All Firefly options turned on. No missing poly on my machine. Athlon 1600, 512 meg, Geforce 2 with 64 meg. Did you have "smooth polygons" turned on? --jjsemp

By the way, that render took 40 seconds. --jjsemp

I'm afraid to ask what the render time is after you throw some dynamic hair and clothes with collision detection in the pot. My 'puter stinks because I can only have 2 RAM slots. OK, time to look into the 2 Gig ram sticks, they do have them availble don't they?

phoenixamon ( ) posted Mon, 09 September 2002 at 5:28 PM

It only takes my machine about 5 seconds to render the default. I have an Athlon 1.4 GB and 1 GB ram. That is using the production render settings. I've confirmed (as someone else did in a post above) that the draft render options in firefly cause missing polys. So far it seems like strand-based hair adds the most to render times. Cloth will not add much to rendr times if anything, because the dynamics are not calculated at render time, and it's the calculation that takes long. And so far I can't do anything with it but drop a piece of cloth onto a box. :) Phoenix

Farang, I've only been able to find 1 gig ram sticks... if you can find them, please let me know where!! Jack

Jack, I do all my shopping for pieces parts (memory, hard drives, etc.) at Price Watch. But be warned: just because a computer has to sockets does not mean it will handle 2 GB! Many boards max out at 1 or 1.5 Gb. Brian

"It only takes my machine about 5 seconds to render the default." In my render above, I turned on all the Firefly options. When I said "default" I meant that he was in the default position with the default lights. Firefly draft render doesn't include all options turned on. --jjsemp

"I have an Athlon 1.4 GB..." Phoenixamon, I assume you mean that you have an Athlon 1.4 Ghz. There is no such thing as an Athlon 1.4 GB. An Athlon 1600 (which is what I have) is the same as an Athlon 1.4 Ghz. We have the same CPU. --jjsemp

Thanks Brian, my HP can handle them... hell, I remember when having two megs was allot of memory!! LOL... my how times change!! Jack

brian71us ( ) posted Mon, 09 September 2002 at 6:12 PM

Yeah, and I still remember when 64 kilobytes was a lot! Boy, those were the days... ;) Brian

You mean the day has arrived where we need more than 64K? Bill Gates lied dang it.... :) Tom

phoenixamon ( ) posted Mon, 09 September 2002 at 7:06 PM

LOL! Yeah... Athon 1.4 gigasumpin' and I built it. I just can type.... er... that is think straight today. My art brain is on and my tech brain is sleeping. That's my excuse and... ;) When I said 5 seconds, I was refering to the production render settngs, whatever they are. I don't think they have everything turned on, though, but more than the draft render. But the reson I posted before... Damn draft render settings leave chunks out of the meshes and I don't like it one bit. Phoenix

I have some render test pages and firefly's "draft mode" fails to render some polygons. Draft Mode also doesn't render some lights and refuses to render WorldZ. (Production Mode is okay.)

This image has 8 lights and a background, but half the lights aren't showing up, nor the background, nor parts of the dragons' wings. The dragon laying on the ground looks like his wings were shredded, but they're whole in the final, production mode render. The "P4" renders are just fine.

Cage ( ) posted Tue, 10 September 2002 at 4:52 AM

Hmm. The membranes on the dragon wings are one sided. It looks like the reflection is not depicting the backside of those polygons.... Is there a setting option for that? If not, I hope they fix that. Could be a major shortcoming.... :( Dang, I wish mine would get here. Why did I select Ground delivery? Dang, I hope my system will run P5.... I only have a 950 mhz processor and 512 MB of RAM.... (Can you see the cartoon sweat drops flying from my forehead?)

Cage can be an opinionated jerk who posts without thinking.  He apologizes for this.  He's honestly not trying to be a turkeyhead.

Cage had some freebies, compatible with Poser 11 and below.  His Python scripts were saved at archive.org, along with the rest of the Morphography site, where they were hosted.
