Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 29 7:57 am)
It does work on OSX in Classic mode, but if I remember correctly Curious Labs say they don't support it. I bought Jaguar a couple of days ago, and Poser seems to work better with that than with OSX 10.1.5 which I had before. For example, with OSX 10.1.5 if I quit Poser I had to restart Classic to be able to restart Poser, but with Jaguar it's not necessary. Classic mode also starts much faster with Jaguar.
Hello Supergirl Sadly enough, Poser 4 is not "carbonized", meaning it won't work in native OS X environment. However, it will run in Classic mode (Jaguar might not keep the MacOS 9 folder into the same partition as was the case for the preceding version of Mac OSX, but it will detect if there is any OS 9 present in any of your other partitions...) So that means...partition your hard drive, clean install your version of Mac OS 9 on one partition and clean install the Mac OS X on the other (you have got to have plenty of disk space, and also, more than the required 128 Mb of ram). Install your favorite programs, and when it's done and you're ready to play, double-click on Poser 4. Classic mode will launch as soon as you double-click on the Poser program icon, and you are going to be able to go at it as you like. When I want to dabble in Poser, though, I restart with my my Mac OS 9 partition (Jaguar might be fast, but nothing compared to the performance of Mac OS 9 for any G3 G4 machine). And, added benefit given sufficient disk space, I can crank up the virtual memory (it may slow down things a bit, but gets some jobs done that otherwise couldn't) Hope it helps... PH
This is interesting. So 10.2 is much better than 10.1.5 for clasic mode. I did know this. Does classic mode also run faster (one it has started), or is it about the same? I heard that Poser runs much slower in OS X than in OS 9. Has Jaguar improved this? I find it silly that you need to have OS 9 installed to use classic apps in Jaguar. That is like needing Windows 95 along side Windows XP (or even sillier yet, Windows 3.1). Silly, silly, silly. SuperGirl
My hard disk is not partitioned at all. First, when I bought the computer, OS 9.2 was installed. Then I installed OSX 10.1.1, and then I have upgraded 10.1.2 - 10.1.5 without formatting the hard disk. The only thing I have had to do to is hard disk repair by starting in command line mode and then typing a command, which may sound terrifying to a Mac user, but really is quite simple. I think Classic mode is about the same speed in Jaguar as in OS 10.1.5, and probably Poser is a lot slower than in OS 9. But I prefer to do something else while Poser renders, rather than boot in OS9 .... Everything else about OSX is so much nicer than OS9.
By all means, do get Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar). It's fantastic! You will still be able to boot solely into OS 9 (not the same as the Classic Environment) so if you do have problems running in the Classic Environment you can always reboot in just OS 9 to run Poser. I do this all the time because I haven't found Poser to be very stable in the Classic Environment in past versions of OS X ... HOWEVER, I haven't really tried running Poser in the Classic Environment since upgrading to 10.2. I will now though ... based on the comments in this message thread. Hope it works now! About to find out. :-)

By the way since version 10.1, I have always had OS 9 and OS X installed on the same partition and have never had a problem. In fact, I also have OS 9 and OS X installed again on an external drive as a back-up plan in case one drive fails. No problem doing that either. :-)

I use Poser Pro-Pack on OS X 10.1.5 on a PowerBook G4 (800) with 1 gb Ram. No problem except for what Marianne said about having to restart Classic to get Poser to work after closing it. Seems pretty stable actually. I've been tempted to tryout Jaguar though. But I can jump around to various programs with no problem. From earlier posts, sounds like Jaguar is not a bad move!

Generally, Poser 4 has been working fine for me in Mac OS X all along, including 10.2. However, there's one "quirk"... One of the things I loved about moving Poser 4 from Mac OS 9 to X was that it no longer could lock up the whole bloody system while it rendered -- I could still switch away from Classic and get work done. Except it was never quite smooth. The dock was hidden, and CMD-TAB didn't switch. Except that if I hit CMD-TAB with my cursor at the bottom of the screen the dock would pop up. Yeah, weird. Well, with 10.2, this doesn't work anymore. I did find, however, the I could work around it by adding another hack to the equation... if I bring up the Force Quit dialog and select another application (but don't quit anything) and THEN do the CMD-TAB/dock thing... (Sheesh.) While it's true that Poser was always a "bad citizen" (when rendering), this is basically a Classic problem rather than a Poser problem. Classic is just a Mac OS X application and ought to behave like one. But heck, Poser is the only thing I ever use Classic for, and it's a minor annoyance once I found the workaround. And "soon" we'll know when we can look forward to not worrying about this anymore. (If you believe the web page...)
Re-hello all ! I was not saying that my way of doing things was the best (i.e. repartitionning disk and cleaninstalling the OSes and stuff) but it is mine and works well everytime the 'puter does the nasty. As for Classic operation within OS X with any 3D prog, it slows things a bit to my perception compared with the clean operations from a Mac OS 9 disk (I run on an eMac G4 700 mHz, 384 Mb Ram, 40 Gb hd partitioned 25 for OS X and 15 for OS 9). I may not have enough Ram for easy operation, but that's another problem. And maybe it's just because I just quite don't get it when they say this is preemptive multitasking and that is not the same as it was before...did I hear "resistance to change" ? Maybe a cultural gap to fill... So, that maybe it. And yes, Poser is a bad citizen in the Mac world to my sense... From a guy who got acquainted with Poser on a Performa 6200, PPC 75 mHz, 64 Mb ram, 8 Gb hd... (as you can see, no As Shanin clothing, gothic prison freebies...nothing more than 900 X 900 tex maps for posette, and yes, almost exclusively using posette...no render yet upped here because I dont feel worthy...just playing around) PH
If you run Poser 4 in 9 and use Quicktime 6 it will cause a freeze. At least on a G4 400 circa 2000 it will. Havent tried p4 in Classic (with QT6) and dont want to. I could be animating when Im doing that, if I wanted to spend hours fixing my system Id have... Im sure Im not the only one whose computer freezes after doing a QT6 render. There was a post about this once but I cant find it.
Well, I'm back! After trying Poser in the Classic Environment of OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) I have to shout out a great big "thank you" to those in this message thread who gave me the incentive to try Poser in the Classic Environment again. It works great and finally I don't have to reboot back to OS 9 to use Poser. There is a cosmetic interface problem with the Mac OS menu bar turning solid white but ... who the hell cares? The program still works fine without having to spend multiple minutes rebooting into OS 9 just to run Poser! THANKS!!! :-)

I am using Mac OS 9 and Poser 4, and I am thinking of getting OS X (Jaguar). How many people use Poser 4 and OS X together? Is there any issues? Any advice you can give me would be gratefully received. SuperGirl
