THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Problem importing models from Celtic Cross 3D

Erlik ( ) posted Wed, 25 September 2002 at 10:20 AM · edited Thu, 13 February 2025 at 3:28 PM

After AgentSmith posted the list of free software, I downloaded Celtic Cross. I mean, I like the knotwork. :-) Anyway, after I created a model in CC3D, I exported it first as an OBJ. Got "bad i/o" whatver error message. Somebody posted a fix, IIRC, here for that. Could you do that again, please? Then I exported the model as DXF. But when I imported it into Bryce, I got something strange. The model loses the polygon count, although Bryce reports anything from 5 to 27 thousand polygons, depending on the number of sides I use in CC3D. So, instead of smooth(ish) ropes, I get something that looks like it's made from rotated cubes. You see the edges. Regardless of smoothing or unsmoothing. Unfortunately, I'm not at my computer, so I cannot post a pic. I'll try to do that when I get home.

That's crazy, never seen that happen before. The fix, that I use anyway, is to run the .obj through "UVMapper Classic". Just load it up, then re-save it. Usually works.

I brought up my celtic knot program and tried it, no problems with .obj or .dxf in Bryce. You may want to uninstall/re-install the Celtic Knot Program, I guess?

Erlik, It may not be what you wanted, but it does look interesting. It reminds if Escher's work. Lin

I'm guessing here but it's to do with dxf'file versions'.
Try this.
Export from knot as dxf, run it through crossroads
http://home.europa.com/~keithr/crossroads/
export as 3ds then import into bryce.

I'll try that when I get home. I tried running an OBJ knot model through UVMapper last night. It said that the model doesn't have UV coordinates and asked me to assign a New UV Model. I put Planar and got a line. Ew. Strange.

Perhaps if you had the 3.37 version of celtic knots?

I downloaded the latest one. I tried Crossroads. It imports dxf, says "something percents ... done" and then nothing appears on screen. Absolutely like I didn't try to import anything. OBJ is imported, but just one strand from several that make a figure. And also Escher-like, even before I convert it to 3ds.

Download it again and install after removing your existing celtic knot. I have not had this problem either and wonder if you got a corrupted DL.

AgentSmith was right. I didn't have 3.37. Installed it and everything works as it should. Thanks.
