THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: GroBoto - 3d software for Mac (free demo available)

So, has anyone played with this yet? It's really weird. The interface is unique. But it does some very cool things, especially things like multireplicating. If you run a Mac, give it a shot. It works in Classic. I've made some stuff (nothing that tests the bound of the software mind you) but the exported models take forever to load into Bryce... but then, they do have seemingly millions of spheres. Anyone else try this yet?

You Mac *%%$!!! so and so's...lol, every once in a while some uniquely cool program pops up and it's for Mac only.... This program looks freaking COOL! Very unique interface, reminds me of the spirit of MetaCreations interfaces, or Amorphium. I love how Groboto primitives can have beveled edges. That's one thing about Bryce that drives me to insane madness, can't make edged behave. AS

Ah, with all the cr*p you Mac users recieve, you deserve something good...but why does it have to be SO fun looking? I know this is a naive shot in the dark...hasen't anyone made a middle-man software that will allow windows software to run on a mac and/or mac software to run on windows? (yeah I know, that's just begging for instability) AS

Oh yeah, It's called Virtual PC. They are up to version 5 now if i remember correctly. Basically it's a windows emulator. I think there is another product that let's you run a Mac OS on a Windoze box.

There are emulators, AS. For Mac it's called Virtual PC, and I don't know what the leading one is for Windows. The problem with these is that they're slooooooow. And as a Mac user, I am thrilled to see 3D stuff on the Mac. You Winders fellers get everything. Anyway, here's a silly little thing I did with Groboto. It's a default "bot" which is basically a default Multi-Replicate setting. The cool thing is that when you make the model, it's all multi-repped spheres. When you export, you can have it merge the spheres, which is what I did with this. It's just a test, and those are just default Bryce materials, but I think this Groboto has some potential!

Looks very nice, did anyone email support and ask if an X native version was coming? They mentioned free upgrades until V2.

AgentSmith ( ) posted Tue, 08 October 2002 at 4:48 PM

lol...no but I did e-mail them asking if there would ever be a windows version....;o) Can't believe the program only costs $44.

I'll email them and ask about the OS X version. yeah, I looked at the price and was amazed, for the price of a Poser model or so, you can get a whole program!

TheVelvetFoxx ( ) posted Tue, 08 October 2002 at 4:57 PM

Hope they will make a Windows version. This above pic makes this prog look like tons'o'fun.

Lot of fun, I also like the "roll your own" physics simualtion games. The only downside is a lot of the really complex primitives don't export and the files can be huge. But something like this would make a great modeler for Bryce. The link above is to a Groboto/B5 image of a single object, right out of the presets. Best-Dan

Looks like an OS X version is coming!! from an email: Hello Sterling, Yes we are working on our OSX release. We plan on having it ready by the end of the year - public betas sooner than that. We will let you know. Thanks, Darrel And fast customer response time too :) I emailed him after saying I would in the post above

johnpenn ( ) posted Tue, 08 October 2002 at 8:48 PM

dan, nice machine! This is a groovy little app! I'm definitely buying this one. yeah, it's limited, and it's weird, but it does some neat stuff, and it's on the Mac platform!

humorix ( ) posted Wed, 09 October 2002 at 6:18 AM

Nifty little software! Wish there was a Windows version! :-((. This is exactly how I would have envisaged the multi-replication lab to be in Bryce! Why isn't Corel doing anything about it, considering they have the sphereoid designer technology with them of KPT3??????

lsstrout ( ) posted Wed, 09 October 2002 at 1:55 PM

So what happens to the export if you only have B4 (no metaballs? Has anyone tried it? Lin

johnpenn ( ) posted Wed, 09 October 2002 at 2:04 PM

It doens't export Bryce primitives, it exports meshes. So Bryce 4 will work fine.

Woo hoo!

AgentSmith ( ) posted Wed, 09 October 2002 at 10:51 PM

I finally heard back from Darrel at Groboto... ------------ "We are currently working on our first windows version. We expect an initial release by the end of the year. It will be a while before all of groBoto's features are incorporated into the Windows version. However this first Windows release will include our most popular and powerful tools. It will also use our high quality groboVision render engine in work mode". ---------------- ...and the masses rejoiced... AgentSmith
