Subject: New format in the Art Galleries...

ClintH ( ) posted Sat, 05 October 2002 at 1:11 PM · edited Tue, 26 November 2024 at 8:44 PM

As most of you have noticed we have modified the look and feel of the Art Galleries. We have given the Art Galleries a new look that has more of a Renderosity feel to it. We have made it very easy to provide credits for products used in images. When uploading you can now use the drop down menu to select the MarketPlace merchant(s) name(s)(Up to 10) for crediting products used in your art work. These credits will provide a direct link to the merchant store so you can easily find the products used in the image. We feel the new look is more aesthetically pleasing. I hope you enjoy the modification. Regards, Clint MarketPlace Manager

We feel the new look is more aesthetically pleasing. Maybe you've missed the couple of threads before this one, Clint. Rather a lot of people are not enjoying the modification and find it anything but aesthetically pleasing. The new visible boxes around comment/credits etc are extremely intrusive, distract the eye from the art, and interrupt the flow of the page. Please make these tables invisible again - they're ugly and they spoil the page. And the products that are easier to find are merchants' products, not free stuff. On the other hand, addition of dates to comments is a good and helpful idea, so kudos for that. The rest, though, is a backward step for the galleries.

Thanks, Clint, I'm glad to see that you folks are still filled with good ideas on how to improve the site. Great job!

I liked having the option to instant message folks who comment on images right from the image itself. Is there a saving of bandwidth that makes this option less desirable?

I like the look of it, but a couple of questions on the formatting and execution: 1) Can you still input credits? As opposed to just the drop down? [Haven't uploaded a pic in a while, definately not since the change] 2) If not, can we get a "blank" or input field in the droplist so that we can also input a member name for crediting freebie providers? Heya - nothing agaisn't crediting a merchant, but I use freebies in my stuff also, and not being able to do that is going to cut out credits to a probably larger number of members than there are merchants whose stuff is used. Pannyhb - you should still be able to IM someone who left a coment just by clicking on their username next to the comment. That [at least used to] takes you to the IM screen. This'll take some getting used to. It's a major enough change that it's bound to rub some people the wrong way.

I have an 18 inch TFT (1280x1024 pixel) Monitor and the new fontsize is too small for my opinion. Boris

The "Vote for this image" - field is too inconspicuous ! Please set a nice button.

CryptoPooka ( ) posted Sun, 06 October 2002 at 6:33 AM

Heh, Boris, you should try reading the dinky font at 1400x1050. BTW ... if you have a wheel on your mouse, hold down CTRL and roll the wheel back towards you. Your viewing font size should increase. Quick and dirty "read the fine print" without having to go in and change settings. It's 6 freakin 30 in the morning here and I haven't been to bed for two days, so I'm currently drawing a mental 404 on how to quick change fonts without a wheel. Drat it.

This wheel mouse trick is cool - thanks! J.

I think the changes they made to putting the Image Description back helped a lot. The four suggestions I still see that can use some improvement... 1> Cellpadding in the comment table, which I mentioned before, so that the comments are easier to read and not all jumbled together. 2> If there are no credits or the artist decided not to use the credit system (for whatever reason, freestuff, RDNA stuff, whatever) to have the script that prints that screen, not have a table cell for that and extend the link section (Online Store, Free Stuff, Etc, Etc) across the whole line. That way it won't look funky and a lot of wasted space. This is very simple to do in a CGI call. 3> I agree the Vote for Button needs to me more seen. It's buried in a bunch of links. 4> Would it be possible to put the name back above the Image Description or perhaps under the title. If you didn't notice who did the picture when you went in, it seems like you have to hunt for it.

Am I to understand that the MarketPlace Manager is responsible for the design ethos in the art galleries? We already have the "Renderosity feel" on the whole page. Now we have a "Renderosity feel" format within a format. How about putting a box around every word and be done with it! The new features guiding viewers to the MarketPlace are fine ( for those that want them ), the new design is gratuitous and from my personal creative point of view it lacks credibility. "aesthetically pleasing" not by a long shot! Cheers!

Thanks for the feedback. We are still making changes. The Description is moved up and centered. The section of the gallery will be listed at the top. The Vote for this image will be listed under the description. The artist information will be as is except the username will link to the artist's homepage with links to IM them, their store and gallery. The credits will only be present if there are credits listed. This is providing a credit space for marketplace products used in the image. The description section can be used the same such as providing credits for those freestuff items, etc. Thanks tammy

Sounds good Tammy... Please though, don't forget the cellpadding around the comments. It's hard to read the way it is... ShadowWind

Thanks for these improvements. As well as the cell padding, could you also remove the boxes, or at least give us the option to make them invisible.

I think we have landed. : ) Thanks for everyone's feedback. We have some free flow information such as the Image Description and Product Credits. We have some structured content with the comments. thanks tammy

Thanks Tammymc for listening to our suggestions and I apologize publicly for taking the defensive. I should have waited for the dust to settle. Great work from those involved.

I add my vote of confidence with ShadowWind. The whole thing is panning out quite well now. Cheers to all!

Thanks for those improvements, it looks much better now that the boxes are much further down the page. As always, you guys did a great job responding. Cheers
