i'm writing a utility and need detailed docs on the PZ2 file type. The Appendix in the Poser Manuals doesn't get you very far. Any help would be appreciated. Jamball77 Home of the MIMIC FAQ

ummmm, in all truth you should just document the PZ3 file. It has every setting that would ever appear in a poser file. All other file types are subsets of this type. After that then just go through and state what sections are found in what files normally.

I'm not looking to document anything... I'm in search of docs! Since the PZ2 is a subset of PZ3 fine. Givme the PZ3 docs already :). Thanks.

ok how about a CR2? try my site at http://home.carolina.rr.com/kattman under portals-galleries-tutorials and look at the CR2 autopsy.

so you're the guy who wrote the cr2 autopsy. i have that archived on my HDD in a treasured place... no kidding. PZ2 will have stuff in it though about keyframe locations etc. that won't show up in CR2s. I hadn't thought to look at similarities though. thanks.

HEH, yep, I'm the man. I've been thinking about an almost toal re-write from the standpoint of the PZ3. This would cover all aspects of every file.

KattMan I have your 4 parts of the CR2 autopsy in a single PDF doc if you want it. Makes it easy to do keyword searches (binocular icon in Adobe Acrobat) within Acrobat. Having written a few tutorials I know it takes effort to perfect a document like that.

I might take you up on it if I go the full PZ3 format autopsy. I'll also be breaking it down a bit better.

You also might want to contact Anthony (Nosfiratu) at CL. At one time, I think, he was working of documenting file structure. Then he got distracted by ... P5.

KattMan ( ) posted Thu, 17 October 2002 at 10:29 AM

I would but for one exception. Part of the joy of doing this is the discovery. Anthony would just be able to hand me the info and it would be a very cold ride. I want to jump in with both feet and then find out what I am swimming in.

Yep, Anthony wrote an advanced document on poser files. That same document appears in the Poser 5 manual as 'Part 11 - Appendix B - Poser File Structures' You can also download the Poser 5 PDF from the Curious Labs site. mac

SO it's already in there? I might have to go ahead and check it out just to see if he missed something or to fill any gaps I may have. Thanks for the heads up.

jamball77 ( ) posted Thu, 17 October 2002 at 6:35 PM

I checked the docs. Anthony's attempt to shed some light is just great for the average Poser user who has a passing interest in what's going on under the hood. But it is a far cry from what a programmer needs to sort out all the file structure in the PZ# files. Nothing at all like katman's CR2 autopsy. So I guess the answer is no. No one has done a thorough job of documenting on the PZ# I contacted CL tech support and haven't received a reply yet.

No disrespect to Anthony intended. Books are notoriously limited in the # of pages allowed, and ususally the scope of each section is carefully thought out. Poser manuals after all are written for poser users not devious hackers of the Poser space time continnum.

Heh, then I guess I still need to work on that project.
