if you use IE for your web browser...goto TOOLS...then click on Windows Update... you will go to the right place...their system analyzes your windows install, and pops up a list of updates needed...you have the choice of installing them or not...

Yep...the first day it was on the MS site...I'm one of those anal guys...I subscribe to several forums that report new drivers and stuff...so when they become available, I download and install them. Same with windows--I usually check for updates at least twice a month. Defrag at least twice a month....delete all my temp files and all that stuff :)_ Defrag prior to installing anything new...the whole routine. Sometimes, however, I think my system may be ahead of the curve, especially, even like Poser 5, which has been on the table for awhile...it was not programmed for Detonator 40.81 or Win XP SR-1....

While I do believe in getting the updates, new is not always better. MS has released bad patches and had to retract and replace them in the past and likely will find that same human error in the future, as all companies do. I get updates, but read the info first. If the update has no bearing on my system, I ignore it. If it does, I wait till the patch has been out for a few weeks before getting it. Just a word of caution in general. I think XP sp1 has been out a while and likely is stable. Have xp pro at work on all 18 workstations and will likely update in two weeks or so. That gives you an idea of our conservative approach.
c1rcle, I think sp1 addressed many security vulnerabilities (not completely certain since I don't run it, but I recieve all of their update alerts via email) If it won't run, you should probably contact them (hopefully for free, I doubt you caused it to fail, therefor you shouldn't have to pay) That said, if you are behind a firewall, and keep all the other internet apps updated (browser, mail reader, what ever) you might be better off leaving well enough alone:) As far as spying, I think you probably are just as visible to them without the SP. They've already had one judge slap their wrists for misleading end users about their privacy (passport), what's another small fine :) eric

I was having some problems with Poser5 when someone told me about the service packs and upgrades for Windows at the Microsoft site. I downloaded SP1 for WinXP along with a few others, and between that and SP1 for P5, I dont seem to be having any problems at all now! I am wondering how many of our stability issues are from Windows problems. I have been advised NOT to us the driver updates from MS, as they may not be the latest...go to the OEM site instead. Hope this helps someone. Scarab
