Subject: Maximum resolution in P5

I have not yet tried P5 and wonder if one of the most annoying (although sometimes there is a lot of candidates for that title...) things of P4 has been fixed. In P4, maximum resolution for the renders is 4096x4096. This is very annoying since I can't render a fullscreen wallpaper for my monitor setup 6400x1200 (four monitors). What is the maximum resolution in P5? /Raw

I don't know of any hard maximum, but I just tried a 6400x1200 render with a couple primitives to see if it would work and it did. So it's theoretically possible. Render time was like 2 minutes or so. I don't know what you're planning to include in your scene, but be prepared for long render times if it's very complex. Anthony Hernandez Curious Labs

Thanks! That closes the deal for me, I'll buy P5 as soon as my economy gets somewhat stable again (just bought a house). Render time is not a problem, I can let it run for days on that computer if need be (especially since it is a dual CPU with plenty of memory). Now on to the challenge of finding/making good texture maps that can stand up to that resolution! :-)

Thee does seem to be a limitation on the size of texture maps though - aren't P5 texture maps (with SR-2) limtied to 4K (or resized to 4K internally if larger)? Cliff Bowman

If it comes to that, I can remap the model and cut up the map in several pieces. A similar problem might arise with shadow maps, but with the new renderer I suspect that this will be solved. Anyway, I usually run my images through a softening filter in the post work. It hides some of the failures in the textures, removes the "too perfect to be real" look and makes it easier to manually correct glitches.

Is this 4K size limit on textures final and permanent?

I hope not but judging from the responses I've seen (of incredulous "You can't need textures that large" ilk, I wouldn't put any money on it :(

there is no 4k limit on textures I've used 6000X6000 textures with no problem

If you want to render bigger than 4090x4090 in Poser4/Pro Pack, just set up the size you want in the Movie Output Settings and render a one frame anim at current render settings.

wdupre, I saw a reference from CL, in one of their patch contents I believe (SR2?), that stated something about a 4K resolution reduction. Sounded like it would be an automatic thing p5 did.

PRior to SR-2 P5 has "issues" with textures larger than that. SR-2 "fixed" those issues by scaling the textures down internally :(

I'm not sure I would call that a "fix"...not even a workaround. More like a compromise.
