I tried using two plains. It erased all the ground and I saw the sky through the bottom. Iv'e run in to the same thing trying to boulean difference in Rhino with open and closed surfaces. You can't cut a hole in a solid sphere with a cup. I dont know how many dimensions the infinite plain has but it's not the same as a terrain object or they would combine properly. How's it looking?

I was the one who told you to try Boolean, but I did a lousy job of it so I'll try again, because this is a useful technique for making roads, rivers, etc. Hope this makes things clearer. By the way, your final solution for the driveway looks great, don't change it!
