Subject: Newbie alpha question...

How do I load a background into a pic's alpha channel? I've opened them both, clicked Load Selection on the destination pic but when I get to choose a source there's only my destination pic on the drop-down. What am I doing wrong?

In the source image, layers palette, double-click on it to transform it into a regular layer, you should then be able to load it in the other document. (Backgrounds are unusual in that they can't have alphas.)

Did that, now i can choose it from the drop-down menu...but only as a Layer 0 transparency? P.S. I forgot to mention, I'm using Photoshop 5.5.

Ah, right. To get the background of one image document to act as a selection in another, what you'll need to do is: 1. Go to the source image background, hit Ctrl-A (Select All) then Ctrl-C (Copy) to get it all into the clipboard. 2. Go to the destination image and bring up the Channels palette, create a new blank channel, select it and Ctrl-V (Paste) into it. Note that if the source image is in color, it will be transformed into grayscale when pasted into a channel. 3. Now Ctrl-Click on (or Load Selection) the newly-created channel. Photoshop stores selections as channels. Sorry, I wasn't quite sure what you were trying to do the first time around, hope this helps. Also, I am assuming that the destination image is in RGB mode.
