Subject: Question for Poser People: Ray Harryhausen models

tempest0308 ( ) posted Sat, 02 November 2002 at 3:36 PM ยท edited Fri, 22 November 2024 at 8:11 PM

After a post I made to the poser newsgroup, I thought I'd post a similar query here as well: Is there a market for Poser-ready models based on the wonderful creatures from Ray Harryhausen's movies? I know I'd buy most of them. I don't have the modeling expertise to do them justice, so this is really a question for modelers. I would love to have an Ymir (the creature from 20 Million Miles to Earth) or some of the creatures from the Sinbad movies. Comments? Discussion? Shawn

I'd like to see them. There would be copyright issues, but Harryhausen is probably so respected here that nobody would try to rip him off and sell any of them without permission.

Love that movie! And all his creatures. He was light-years ahead of them all in Hollywood. mac PS I saw a terrific documentary on Harryhausen. Wish I could remember where. BBC, maybe?

I always liked that Cyclops in Seventh Voyage of Sinbad (built up from the Ymir's armature BTW). And the giant statue of Talos that came to life in Jason and the Argonauts. Mesmerizing when I saw it in the theater at 11 years old.

...the sword fighting Kali statue from the "Golden Voyage of Sinbad." As I understand it, it was his role as the evil wizard (in the movie) that landed Tom Baker his role as the 4th Doctor. Ironically, Troughton, the 2nd Doctor, portrayed a kindly Greek scholar in the next (and sadly, last) installment of the Sinbad sagas. How about the "Beast from 20,000 Fathoms?" Say, ScottA, are you up to the task? You've made other prehistoric reptiles, plus, the "Beast" was directly responsible for inspiring "Godzilla" (a kaiju you've interpreted twice). Sincerely, Bill

Tempt the Hand of Fate and it'll give you the "finger"!

Troughton was also in "Jason" as the blind seer Phineas menaced by the Harpies. And Honor Blackman as Hera was a pretty dazzling special effect too. ;-)

Some of dcort's (or do you say dacort?) stuff is rather Harryhausen-esque. And I'm resisting the obvious Honor Blackman joke;-)

Lots of great stuff from Harryhausen. He was responsible for Medusa in Clash of the Titans, also.

http://www.hilux.com/harryhausen/ Wow. Here's a great site about Ray and his work. Nice Javascript shows almost every creature he ever created! Shawn

It seems there is certainly interest. As I previously stated, I don't have anywhere near the expertise to do such a project justice. I am only hoping someone out there does! Shawn
