Subject: Animation Gallery Follow-up

on 9/21/02 I requested that an animation Gallery be created. The concept was simply to provide a central place where animators could post a still graphic, and a link to their animations hosted *elsewhere* (at their own location). I haven't heard any response from "the powers that be" for a while. There are 65 replies to the thread where I requested the establishment of the gallery. I believe 2 were mods and the rest were interested animators, universally declaring their support for the idea. Could someone official please update us on the status of this request? Thank you. We've made it this far thanks to you Bobasaur and my fellow animators! I guess I can't wait a little longer then :-)

We're here with you bobasaur! Animators of the world unite! To the 4th dimension.... and beyond!

I'll look into this and see if we can get you guys an ANIMATION gallery set up. Thanks.

Instead of starting a gallery, we've decided that it may be best to create a new "Animation" free stuff section. That way you can post a thumb as well as a link to the actual animation. In order to accomplish this, we will have to decide on a set of suitable subcategories for the "Animation" section. Any suggestions? Thanks. Tommy

Bobasaur ( ) posted Thu, 14 November 2002 at 11:26 PM

This sounds like it might be a good way to set things up as far as making the "back-end" as easy as possible to implement. I do have several questions though. What kind of size restrictions would be on the thumbnails? By size I mean the dimension in pixels. I don't know if the requirements are different for freestuff as opposed to galleries so I'd like to confirm what they'd be. It might also be good to bear in mind that most animations are oriented Landscape rather than Portrait. I'm not sure how that would impact the thumbnails but... Would we be able to use the "Notes and Requirements" to write a brief description and perhaps mention whether the animations require Flash or QuickTime or Windows Media or divX players? Instead of the "for Commercial or "Non-commercial Use" entry, could we set up something similar to the violence and nudity flags? Finally, and most importantly, although we use the "Free Stuff" technology to implement this, could we make sure it is actually listed as and included with the other Galleries when visitors click on the "Art Galleries" links? It makes sense to me that the "Free Stuff" technology is the most practical way to implement this request but I also suspect that people searching for animations are more likely to search under "Art Galleries" than "Free Stuff." I'd almost recommend that we not have subcategories for 6 - 12 mos. just to see what's really going to be posted. Then we'd have a better idea of how to separate it into meaningful subcategories. If we do go the subcategories route, I'd recommend some kind of subject/genre breakdown (fantasy, action, drama, comedy, smorgasborg, works-in-progress, Nekkid Vicky, etc.). I think that may help potential viewers find things that are aligned with their interests yet be loosely defined enough to give animators freedom in how their animations are labeled. My personal preference is that we not do it by software. In part that's because I believe we can all benefit from multi-disciplinary exposure and in part because some of use use a lot of different software to create any animation. Thanks for the response, Tommy. I'll also update my original post so the other interested parties get ebots letting them know where things stand. Bobasaur

Yep, I second that. People who want 'Free Stuff' are probably annoyed if they get 'only' Movies. ;)

I must agree Madyuri: anyone looking for animations will most likely search in the Gallery section.

bluetone ( ) posted Fri, 15 November 2002 at 3:44 PM

I certainly would! I also agree that it shouldn't be seperated into software sub-sections. If I create an animation in Carrara, or 3DMax, (creating textures in Photoshop,) I then will composite it in Final Cut Pro, then compress for the web with Cleaner or to Flash with Flix. Which sub-catagory would I then put it in? ;> And, I would also like to thank the "Powers-that-be" for this oppurtunity for all of the animators here at R'osity. And a big thanks to Bobasaur for spear-heading this through!

Bobasaur - Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Just not enough hours in the day to do everything one needs to do around here! :) Thumbnails are 200 x 200. You may use the Notes & Requirements section to include the things you mentioned. As for displaying this in the Art Galleries, that would require extra programming and unfortunately our slates are full at this time. It will probably be a couple of months before we could actually design a specific category for animation to facilitate all of the needs you have listed above. However, I do think that the Free Stuff section is a good place to start into the animation arena here and can be launched right away. Programmatically it requires sub categories, so I have no problems using the suggestions you have provided for subcategories. Let me know what you want to do and I'll get the ball rolling. If the freestuff really isn't a good solution then I'll see what we can get worked up for a couple of months down the road (maybe sooner but I can make no promises). Thanks. Tommy

Bobasaur ( ) posted Wed, 20 November 2002 at 7:10 PM

Tommy, I really appreciate your efforts - I know that time is one of the most precious gifts we have! All things considered, this does look like the best way to start. Since this is something completely new, would it be possible to put a text blurb at the top of the page requesting that artists use the "Notes & Requirements" section to provide a brief description, technology/software requirements (Flash vs. Windows Media vs. DivX vs. Quicktime), file size, and content flags as appropriate (nudity/violence). Hopefully this will make it easier for visitors to find things they appreciate. Also, would it be possible to put a text addendum in the All Galleries page that points out that Animations can be found in the Free Stuff section. Finally (boy, I am demanding, aren't I [grin]), how will this be announced? Do I need to post messages in all the forums announcing the Grand Opening of the Animation Section or do I need to write up a blurb for the Renderosity main page (like I did for the Renderosity Video Loop for Dragon*Con) or is there another way? Once again, thanks! We appreciate this! Bobasaur

this is an area that I would realy like to get into. I have a few tools like bryce, poser and mojoworld that can do animations. Thus I would love a place to share and learn from. Also if some of the animation gods want to write a tutorial or two I would love to read them. Thanks!!!!!!

Bobasaur ( ) posted Mon, 25 November 2002 at 10:38 PM

darknewt, do a search for "geep" in the Poser forum. He's done a bunch of excellent tutorials including some that sover animation.

Good call on the Runtime DNA forum - they've got some wonderfully talented people over there, too. There's some sort of file size limit here for the images in the image galleries. I've seen a few people upload animated .gif files that fit within the limits. Obviously, .gif files have limited usefulness. I don't think Bondware has their servers set up to handle the .swf file type or not. As far as linking to .swf files, the only things I've seen anyone get in trouble for linking to was an ordering page on another commercial site.

While we are still waiting for an answer from Bondware, I have a question in regards to animation file compression. I have purchased Quicktime 6.0 in order to compress my Bryce animations for the web, however, each time I render the compression, the animation deosn't look good at all. I beleive I'm doing something wrong. Does anyone have any suggestions on what type of compression to use, and which settings are best. Any information is better than none. Thank you!

Hi all, The animation section of the Free Stuff is now open. As of now, it's not a gallery, per se, but it's a first step. A big THANK YOU to tutone123 for making this happen!
