Subject: DAZ Droid

Am I crazy or is this figure barely freestuff material? They didn't even bother to name his joint dials or provide him with a decent default pose (he comes semi-hunkered-down and leaning to one side). Compared to most DAZ items I've picked up, Droid is pretty weak.

eric501 ( ) posted Thu, 07 November 2002 at 4:11 PM

For a $2.00 figure, he okay, but the one thing that does bothers me about him is the fact that his feet don't want to stay fastened to his legs.

scupper ( ) posted Thu, 07 November 2002 at 4:12 PM

But it wasn't free. It cost me $1.99 plus whatever portion of my Platinum Club membership the discount on little Droidie has to subsidize.

scupper ( ) posted Thu, 07 November 2002 at 4:13 PM

Hey, where'd that post thinking it was free go?

lordbyron ( ) posted Thu, 07 November 2002 at 4:34 PM

I agree with you both, scrupper and eric501. I guess, as it is with Homer, we should warn others saying, "sometimes even DAZ nods."

Moonbiter ( ) posted Thu, 07 November 2002 at 5:06 PM

Well I used the droid not to long ago and liked it. I pulled it up yesterday and ran into the feet problem when using poses. I'm planning on sending DAZ an e-mail to see it if can be fixed, letting them know by letter is probably better than posting it here.

lordbyron ( ) posted Thu, 07 November 2002 at 5:16 PM

Good point, moonbiter. I'll try that. --lb

PheonixRising ( ) posted Thu, 07 November 2002 at 5:35 PM

I just knew making a sci-fi droid was a mistake. It is like fanatsy animals...too subjective. Everyone wants something different. The feet move because the pose you are using was saved with the x,y, & z tran dials used. This is an old and long known Poser bug. We can delete the x, y and z tran dials for the droid's feet which will solve it. Look for an update cr2 shortly. "Barely Freestuff Material"? The default pose looked cool I thought. It was meant to illustrate the Movability. It wasn't meant to be "hunkered down". Wow that is bad. Besides the dial names what about it is substandard? Anton

I think the Droid is great and am plnning to make a bump map for it when I get a free moment (Unfortuantely, a free moment is a rare occurance). Jay

lordbyron ( ) posted Thu, 07 November 2002 at 5:53 PM

Anton, I meant no disparagement of the model itself. My issue was with the "dancing" feet. While I'm here, may I ask you a question? I am comfortable with using a text editor to edit files, so "which lines should I delete to get rid of the x, y, and z trans dials?" I ask only as it's easier to just change the file I already have than use my creeping dial-up. If it's too complicated, I can wait. thanks, --lb

PheonixRising ( ) posted Thu, 07 November 2002 at 6:07 PM

Bend, Swing and Pivot names have been added to the dials and instead of deleteting the tran dials I restored the leg IK chains. I just sent it to Daz so the update should appear on the product page sometime tomorrow. I like the pose so I'm leaving it. :P Anton anton@daz3d.com

Wow, that was quick work Anton. Thanks. I didn't know about that IK bug but it explains my only issue with the droid. As far as making a Sci-Fi Droid, I disagree with your assessment. I'd like to see more things of this style. Anyway I've attached a link to an image I used your droid in. I'll be using it more and more as I work on my own Post-Apocalyptic gaming world.

Nice one, Moonbiter. Looks like a GammaWorld cover.

MaterialForge ( ) posted Thu, 07 November 2002 at 7:54 PM

I agree, I would too like to see more scifi stuff from Daz (and 'rosity merchants, hint, hint...)

Moonbiter ( ) posted Thu, 07 November 2002 at 8:20 PM

Thanks Little Dragon, thats pretty much the look I was shootin' for.

SamTherapy ( ) posted Thu, 07 November 2002 at 8:22 PM

Hey, I like that little droid. Even more so when I made some of my own textures for him/her/it. :) For $2 I'm not complaining. On the other hand, I haven't found a use for the little guy/gal/thing yet. :D

That Droid was -no- mistake... he is cute, and perfect for the sci-fi settings I deal in!

I haven't had a chance to do anything with the droid, yet, but From the first time I saw it I envisioned it as a playmate for the Mil-Kids - When I get some time, I'm going to play with the scaling to get a "Tweakie"-sized 'Bot. Not saying it looks like a toy, but something about the lines suggests a sleek, consumer product, and I'd been thinking of doing a Nanny-Bot for a pic in the back of my mind. (actual render involves rusted, discarded toys, so I like the rusty tex for it)..... "Tweakie was the little Bot on the old Buck Rodgers series in the 70's if I recall correctly)

Anton, I love the droid, and I want to see MORE stuff like that. Scifi/cyberpunk is so hard to find. Not that I mind NVIAT, but there is so much more to poser than that. I'd like to see some bizzare bug/monster things like Davo was/is doing, only more droidy-ish, mechanoid, sorta like Matrix had.

I like the droid, and find it takes standard P4 poses quite well. I used it in this pic (if anyone's interested!).

jkm ( ) posted Fri, 08 November 2002 at 10:10 AM

I like the Droid body but I'm not too crazy about the head. Any chance of getting a set of replacement heads for it (and maybe a couple of different hand/grapper options)?

scupper ( ) posted Fri, 08 November 2002 at 10:42 AM

Anton - My apologies for a rather harsh take on the Droid. You certainly cannot be faulted for either quick response or reaction to criticism. If it's any consolation, a big chunk of my rather obscene Platinum Club binge has gone toward your stuff. :)

Hey Anton, Making the Droid was not a mistake. He is awsome! I just wish he had IK so I can animate him. I can't keep his feet on the floor. If you fixed that aspect of him he would be absolutely stellar. Cheers, Joe

Lawndart ( ) posted Fri, 08 November 2002 at 2:21 PM

Woops... I just saw that you restored the IK. Your awsome! I like the Pose too. If anyone wants him in default position all they need to do is reset the figure. Edit/Restore/Figure Pose on dudes! Joe

raven: That image is incredible. Very nice work! Joe

PheonixRising ( ) posted Fri, 08 November 2002 at 8:45 PM

The update is up. If anyone is having trouble getting the Mac version we'll look into in on Monday. This latest update for the droid is the final version. Maybe we'll do another one someday.

Okay, you are pretty much the coolest. PS -- I'm too busy diggin the Fantasy Beard and Egyptians to play with the Droid update at the moment, but I do truly appreciate it. :)
