I'm a Poser product addict, and now with the Platinum Club, I'm buying 10 times as much stuff. When you guys download products from RDNA, DAZ , and other vendors...do you change the downloaded package name to a real name so you actually know what it is???? For instance, I have a ton of Stuff from DAZ..most of them use codes as the name..like PS-032c or some such...RDNA has codes such as MV-17 as the zip folder name... now how in the heck would I ever know what this is in the future? Screen cap included..would you know what any of this is???? I have been leaving the stuff with the default names, but now, after couple of years of buying and downloading, I don't have a clue what the stuff is unless I actually install it.... So, why not make life easy and change the name to the actual product name when you save it upon downloading? Simple enough... why haven't I done this before?

There was a thread in which the "codes" for DAZ's stuff was explained. Perhaps somone will see the subject I put in and be gracious enough to repost the list here. For example, I think: ps_an = Animation ps_ch = Character ps_tx = Textures etc

Yes I leave the DAZ code but add more to the title, like "..eagle texture"

that would make it a bit easier for sure.... but what I need to do, is rename ps_ac45t to "DAZ_antons furniture texture modern template" ...or something like that so I really know what it is. With every version of Windows since 95, (or thereabouts), and I think Mac as well, you can use 256 characters in the filename...so might as well make it easy for the future :)

What I did was to organize my download folder as shown in the graphic. That way, the file names could be shorter, but the folder structure would help to further define the files.

I keep all of my reciepts so I can do a search on the items name. When I find it, I just look for the filename listed on the reciept. I'm not sure if all of the reciepts (old one's) tell you what file you downloaded, since it seems they named them in a readable fashion at some point. For those, the date is good enough, since it tells me which CD to get out! After joining the platinum club, I started a spread sheet which has the order id, date, items name, filename and keep them all related pieces together. I was afraid I might forget that I had already bought something ( at the price for some of those items, it isn't quite as hard to make last minute purchases which could be forgotten later on) This might pay off later, since you have to have purchase numbers for certain upgrades (which can take forever to find, since my saved mail is kind of messy and quite extensive) eric

I go back and save a picture of the item in the same folder with the same name. Makes it a lot easier to remember later.

I rename EVERY file I download, and simultaneously save the product image with the IDENTICAL name (except .jpg extension). When I get an add-on, I try to rename the file so that it will sort in my directory near the original file for which it is intended. Like so: 15th Century Armor ps_ac243b Adventurers Costumes ps_ac138 Adventurers Good vs Evil ps_tx157b Hatchling Dragon ps_ch044b Hatchling SS Maps 1 ps_tx150a with the images in the same folder, using a thumbnail viewer it is easy for me to rapidly scan a library and find just what I want.

I've always renamed my files to maintain order. DAZ goods get their own section.

So do I... - I mean I alwyas rename files, but try to keep the original name in case I DL the file twice ;) The tip is: there are as many ways to organize files as there are people.

I always rename items.. Easier for me to figure it out later :) Ps_AC= accessories PS_an =animals ps_mo- motions or morphs ps_Ch- characters Ps_pe - people Ps_Tx - textures if it was named when you got it- it's usually a freebie :)

Great stuff.... I've always been pretty helter skelter in organization... my desk is piled high, my shelves are overflowing with stuff...boxes all over with, who knows, what is in them ....

I always change the file names as I download them to begin with DAZ_ProductName_theircode.exe when I download. Otherwise, I'll never know what they are. Melanie

I do like several others above, do. Not only with DAZ items (in a DAZ folder) but with free stuff items. And that is to get a copy of the thumb (for the free items) and (using the ability of PSP to capture a user-defined part of the screen) a copy of the promotional picture on DAZ's site (for the DAZ items). By naming them the same, the pics sort with the purchased files. And, using the "browse folder" part of PSP, it's easy to take a look at all the pics in a particular folder.

I don't change the names, but I do keep them in daz or other directories. I also keep the email invoice which has the common name along with the coded name in the appropriate outlook subdirectory.

I also keep the receipts, but if you haven't, I think you can get a list of your purchases (with the codes) at DAZ...

You can rename the exe yourself when you go to save it.

With free stuff, I always add the name of the contributor in the title of the file (i.e., MedievalTempleByJohnDoe.zip)when I download it, so I'll remember who made it and I can give credit for it without having to go nuts trying to find the artist's name. Melanie

The great thing about Windows is that you can use long file names. Melanie

I suspect OS X can handle long filenames, since Unix has had the capability since it's inception (or at least for a very long time). It's file system uses something different in the index, allowing the name to simply be an attribute of the inode (and therefore independant of any table size restriction).
