What is "VRML Format" ? And is it something Poser can generate output in ? ??

Virtual reality modeling language. A format to publish 'explorable' 3d web content. Very old and used so little on the net, it's not worth noticing.

Has it mostly been abandoned? Or did something replace it ? (sorry, last question I'll ask about it so as not to get too far off forum topic)

can VRML be converted to poser? if so,how?

I'd say it's been superceded by other formats, the names of which escape me. Metacreations sold Poser, Bryce and the rest to concentrate on their version of it, metastream. It was a feature of trueSpace3. I've surfed a few thousand websites and have never come across it in use so I figure it's history. I wouldn't think you'd be able to import it into poser, no. It seemed to me to be a low-res kind of solution and was dismissed in favour of higher resolution solutions for, say, 3D product displays on web sites. I'm not an authority on the subject, but I think that's pretty much the case. Anyone with the up and up on the newer solutions could give you a better idea of those.

If you are interested in 3d worlds, check out adobe atmosphere. Atmosphere is based on viewpoint and poser can make viewpoint objects/figures for atmosphere. Avatar Lab is design specically for this purpose.

Crossroads 3D can convert VRML to Poser-friendly OBJ format.

Crossroads converts 'VRML 1' only. Anyone know of anything that will convert 'VRML 2' to a usable format? I wasn't able to find anything that will do that. cheers, - TJ

PolyTrans and NuGraf can convert VRML 2, but they're a bit expensive.

3DWin and AccuTrans can supposedly convert VRML 2, also, but I haven't tried them.

This program will import vrml 1 and 2 and convert and export to just about any format.
