Subject: How would I go about hacking the cr2 so that one dial works multiple dials?

I think this is doable. OKay, I made this exercise bicycle in Poser. Now, I would like to have a master dial that would turn the pedals and wheel together. At the moment, I have to set the dial for the wheel, each pedal, and the pedal bar individually. I am thinking there should be a way to link these together so that one dial could be used to turn these parts in unison. Er, at least I am hoping it can be done. :O)

Btw, on the figure. I used a closed IK loop on the legs. Never tried this before, but it worked. I parented the figures hips to the bike, then used the change parent to parent each foot to a pedal, this resulted in the figure moving as the pedal turns. When I first tried it, I did not parent the hip first and the figures body bobbed up and down rather than remaining seated. Live and learn.

Well done.

To slave multiple dials to a master dial, you'll need to learn ERC, EasyPose, EMC, or some related acronym.

rbtwhiz has a thorough tutorial on ERC on his website.

Oh, here's another ERC tutorial (downloadable), with many code examples, by VK:

What you want to do is called ERC and you can learn all about it at Nerd's site (www.nerd3d.com I think). The tute over there may still be labeled EMC or even EC. Anyhow, it's a way of setting up a master slave relationship between any pair of dials. There's also a downloadable tute on my artist page that covers some of it, though mine is focused on using ERC to set up EasyPose.

LD beat me to it. Both of those ones he mentioned are good ERC tutes too. Just clarify, ERC is the basic code that sets up one master-slave relationship. EasyPose is a particular structure of multiple ERC relationships used to provide increased posability for long thin chains of many body parts.

Lemme do it for you ! =) It's easy ! A'kin

shadownet ( ) posted Fri, 15 November 2002 at 8:54 AM

Thanks for the help. It is greatly appreciated. Akin, I will keep your offer in mind but if I don't take a crack at it first I will not learn anything new. So, I've got to give it a whirl. Oh, Little Dragon, Ajax, Akin not sure what I am going to do with the Xbike when I get it done, but if any of you three want it, just let me know. My way of saying "thanks" for your help. Rob

"When I first tried it, I did not parent the hip first and the figures body bobbed up and down rather than remaining seated." This could be useful too, but you couldn't post the results here. ; )

ROFL Shame on you Hiram. :O)

My offer was : Lemme do it for you ! Then you will just have to hack the CR2 file (I will tell you where to go) to see my work and understand it ! Cool no ?? =)

shadownet ( ) posted Fri, 15 November 2002 at 11:25 AM

Heya Ackin, Very Cool. The more so as I wade through the different tuts and find my brain feeling like it is scrambled. Okay, lets do it! Makes more sense to hack the cr2 afterward and see what you did. :O) Email me at shadownet@cp-tel.net I will get the file zipped up and so I can send it to you. Rob

shadownet ( ) posted Fri, 15 November 2002 at 12:32 PM

Doing happy snoopy dance! Heya looks like I got this working - course that doesn't mean I did it right and it will not give me probs down the road. Ackinm I will still send the file so you can set it up, then I will compare what you did to what I did. :O)

Sounds like a challenge Rob ! I take any kind of challenge on ERC ! =) HAHAHAHAHAHAHA ! And I'm happy to do it ! Thanks ! A'kin

shadownet ( ) posted Fri, 15 November 2002 at 1:41 PM

Hey A'kin, Emailed you the files so you should have them shortly, if not already. Thanks again. Pardon my typos on your name earlier. First day with the new fingers. :O)

shadownet ( ) posted Fri, 15 November 2002 at 1:42 PM

Oh, I guess doing the cr2 this way, I will now have probs with cross-talk, eh?

The way I did itwith the bike I sell at DAZ was have feet parts as a child of the pedals, what you do is conform the figure to the bicycle with IK on, then turn the crank and the figure start pedaling. Amazing!

shadownet ( ) posted Fri, 15 November 2002 at 9:38 PM

Very clever Jim. Thanks for sharing this. I would not have thought about doing it like that, but it makes great sense. :O)

Okay, got the exercise bike working. Thanks again to everyone who commented the first time round, and to A'kin for giving me a demo of a hacked cr2 to look at so I could better understand this ERC stuff.

I made a turn morph for the body, it works the peddals, pedal bar, wheels, and also causes the numbers on the speedometer to rotate tenths, miles, etc. Not very practical to do this on a Poser model, but I was curious if I could make it work. Also wanted to make the speedometer needle show the speed, but have not figured that out. I really do not think it is possible, but it is one of those stupid people tricks that I would love to pull of just to know if it can be done or not.

So, if any of you have some ideas on how I might make the speedometer needle move according to rpms I would be interested. I can make the needle spin round and round, but not rise and fall like it would depending at the speed you are pedaling (er, that is working as an ERC item). Like I said, Stupid People stuff and not really practical. So why I am doing this. ~shrug~ Beats me.

Jim Burton ( ) posted Mon, 18 November 2002 at 9:50 PM

I don't think it can be done (the speedometer needle), as Poser doesn't know anything about time. You just have to have a dial for it, and adjust it manually. Looks good, though!

shadownet ( ) posted Mon, 18 November 2002 at 10:59 PM

Yeah, I think you are right, Jim. The model could have been a bit better constructed, building it in Poser using the primitives left some joints showing in the mesh. But I did it more for the challenge than anything else. I may go back and try remodeling a few of the parts to see if I can not clean them up a bit. Not sure when I will get to that though. Also, have pulled all my download stuff for a while so this may not be posted anytime soon. If you would like to have the file, let me know I can email it to you in its present completed form. Cheers, Rob

Rob ? I'm not completely involved in speedometer, but I think the main problem is that it used some kind of electricity no ? You find find a speedometer entirely mechanical (Though I think it does not exist it can be esaily done with ERC !) Two last thoughts : Jim ? Thanks for sharing your idea with your bike ! Rob ? Should you wish to better understand ERC files by yourself, buy CR2Edit, it's a worth tool which permits to work on understanding ERC stuff ! =) http://www.zenwareonline.com You won't be deceived. A'kin

shadownet ( ) posted Tue, 19 November 2002 at 7:11 AM

Thanks again A'kin. You have been a great help. Silly me, I have Cr2Edit and forgot you can do ERC with it. :O)

dwilmes ( ) posted Thu, 21 November 2002 at 9:53 AM

Amazing, Rob and Jim! Just when you think there are no new tricks to discover, you come up with a really cool way to use the dreaded IK, which everyone normally turns off immediately! And these are perfect examples of how ERC can make things simpler. Yes Rob, your version 5 has ERC, this is one of the more popular tools. Version 6beta is currently 4X as big as 5, and includes tools to automate modifying any type of Poser file. No more wasting time with tutorials and text editors, now you will be able to spend that extra time creating art and discovering more cool things like actually putting IK to practical use. There is a list of current tools here: http://www.zenwareonline.com/cr2edit/Ver6Tools.html If you see anything missing, let me know. The web site for 6 is partly done, you can take a peek here: http://www.zenwareonline.com/cr2edit/cr2edit6.html For Japanese users: Himeko has moved her Poser site: http://olive.zero.ad.jp/~zbh69832/tomo/tomo.htm Thanks to both of you for the inspiring work! Hi Dan, Yeah, I suffer from bad habit. I get so use to doing things one way, I sometimes forget there are other ways. I do not use Cr2Edit nearly as much as I should, because of habit. I just got use to hacking the cr2 by hand and I am an old dog, slow to learn those new tricks even when there is a simplier, better way. I really do need to sit down with Cr2Edit and learn to use it so that it becomes habit. It is a great program. Very powerful. Keep up the good work. :O)
